View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Texas A&M Repository THE GREATEST UNREALITY: TABLETOP ROLE-PLAYING GAMES AND THE EXPERIENCE OF IMAGINED WORLDS A Dissertation by NICHOLAS J. MIZER Submitted to the Office of Graduate and Professional Studies of Texas A&M University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Chair of Committee, Tom Green Committee Members, Harris Berger Vaughn Bryant Travis Dubry Head of Department, Cynthia Werner December 2015 Major Subject: Anthropology Copyright 2015 Nicholas J. Mizer ABSTRACT Drawing on four years of participant observation, interviews, and game recordings, this dissertation explores the collaborative experience of imagined worlds in tabletop role- playing games such as Dungeons & Dragons. Research on tabletop games has at times been myopic in terms of time depth and geographic scope, and has often obscured the ethnographic realities of gaming communities. This research expands the ethnographic record on tabletop role-playing games and uses a phenomenological approach to carefully examine how gamers at five sites across the United States structure their experience of imagined worlds in the context of a productive tension between enchantment and rationalization. After discussing the history of Dungeons & Dragons in terms of enchantment and rationalization, the dissertation presents three case studies, each exploring a different facet of experience in imagined worlds. At a convention in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, gamers commemorate the life of Dungeons & Dragons co-creator Gary Gygax, but also their own childhoods and a sense of a lost, imagined pre-modern world.

  • A Compendium of Unusual Deities for Labyrinth Lord
A COMPENDIUM OF UNUSUAL DEITIES FOR LABYRINTH LORD 1 A COMPENDIUM OF UNUSUAL DEITIES FOR LABYRINTH LORD PETTY GODS Original idea by Blair Fitzpatrick (planetalgol.blogspot.com). Development and compilation by James Maliszewski (grognardia.blogspot.com). Design, layout and logo by Peter Gifford (headlesshollow.com). Cover illustration by Thomas Denmark. All materials are owned by their respective creators and are used with their permission. Published April, 2013 4 PETTY GODS Foreword BY PAUL JAQUAYS I’ve always felt that the best role playing game aids are the ones that enable the imagination, rather than replace it. These are typically not part of the brand name “sharecropper” game settings, bursting with all the pre-fab details necessary to run somebody else’s world. Rather, they are often small press publications, chock full of inspirational gems; stockpiles of stand-alone ideas, encounters, characters, deities, and settings that are intended to blend into the stories being created by game masters and their players. Over the years, I’ve worked on a few such game aids … Central Casting, CityBook, The Dungeoneer, and of course The Unknown Gods from Judges Guild … which as I understand, is the inspiration for this book. And that, of course, means it’s one of the good ones. Paul Jaquays December 25th, 2010 Author of Dark Tower & The Caverns of Thracia Foreword BY PETER GIFFORD In October 2012 I stumbled across James Maliszewski’s Grognardia blog, and a little something called the ‘OSR’ that had been ticking along for several years without my knowledge. As someone who came into the hobby in 1978 with Empire of the Petal Throne and the Holmes Basic D&D set, it was right up my alley.

  • LIST of USEFUL OLD-SCHOOL/OSR INTRO MODULES V1.7 Lol Definition Wars Lol
LIST OF USEFUL OLD-SCHOOL/OSR INTRO MODULES v1.7 lol definition wars lol These are adventures adhering to some sort of old-school mindset that were intended to be faced by 1st-level characters, included because I either think that they’re good or because they’re commonly recommended. Bear in mind that authors’ ideas of what constitutes an appropriate low-level challenge varies. Also bear in mind that the assumed party size varies, so that some of these adventures were only intended to be tackled at 1st level if the party was quite large and/or supplemented with 2nd-level characters (e.g. B2 was intended for 6-9 players; B4 for 6-10 players). THE CLASSICS B1 In Search of the Unknown Basic D&D. Introductory scenario with DM advice, intended to teach how to not just run but create dungeons. It does this by leaving lots of blank spaces for you to work your magic, but for that reason it’s only as good as you are, and if you’re just starting, that’s probably not so good. Also hard to map if you’re teaching that (though see here for an easier- to-use version of the upper level map, and here for an alternate full dungeon layout). For creatives only. B2 The Keep on the Borderlands Basic D&D. A small keep to explore, and a nearby cave system full of beasties, with short play and rules advice for those new to the game. Very straightforward. Easier to use out of the gate than B1, but pretty basic.

  • Labyrinth Lord, Revised Edition
Classic Fantasy Roleplaying Game of Labyrinths, Magic, and Monsters By Daniel Proctor Goblinoid Games FOREWORD Labyrinth Lord is not new or innovative. This game exists solely as an attempt to help breathe back life into old-school fantasy gaming, to do some small part in expanding its fan base. Labyrinth Lord follows in the footsteps of other „retro-clone‰ game systems. One might think of it as an emulator, meant to employ game rules (algorithms) from early 1980s games by using new presentation in combination with terms that are open game content, provided under the Open Game License Version 1.0a, by Wizards of the Coast, Inc. Labyrinth Lord is a restatement of a set of rules that are otherwise out of print and no longer commercially supported. This work follows the idea that game rules themselves are not subject to copyright, only the specific presentation of those rules are. The goal of Labyrinth Lord and other retro-clone systems is to make rules currently available, using a common reference, for third-party publishers to create gaming material that is not only compatible with the particular retro-clone system, but also with the system which it seeks to emulate. By doing this we hope to help build a market for games that have otherwise been allowed to fade into the past. For further information, please visit our website at www.goblinoidgames.com. This effort is meant to complement, not replace, the fine work that came before it. If Labyrinth Lord succeeds in being a good representative of old-school fantasy roleplaying, it only does so because it lies on a solid foundation.
