Let yourself be inspired in any way that happens naturally. Then think about the questions below, and discuss them with your classmates. Conversation Questions 1. Where can you see this work of art? How long did it take Michelangelo to complete it? 2. Who is the central figure of this masterpiece? What does He seem to be doing with His hands? 3. What is the main contrast you see in this fresco? What are the two kinds of souls, and what is happening to them? 4. Is it possible to understand some truth from this painting even without knowing who all the people are, or what exactly is happening in every part of the painting? If so, what is that truth? 5. This fresco is on the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel. It is huge — 44 feet by 39 feet, or almost four stories tall. Imagine yourself viewing it in real life, amid the incense, candles, and softly murmured prayers in the chapel. How do you think the scale of the work of art would affect you? 6. The walls and ceiling of the Sistine Chapel are almost entirely covered with beautiful frescoes. You have to crane your neck to see all of them, and even use binoculars to see all the details. They took many years to complete at great expense. Why would the Church go through all that trouble? 7. Look for figures/scenes including the ones below. Distribute Handout A: Statements from the Sermon on the Mount. Have students complete it individually or in pairs. Reconvene the class for students to share responses. Discussion Questions 15-20 minutes ӹ What is the connection between the Beatitudes and the Crucifixion? ӹ Why does the Crucifixion illustrate true joy? ӹ Why are the Beatitudes more realistic than unrealistic? ӹ Is Christianity simply a religion that aims to help individuals justify sadness, rejection, and injustice? ӹ Is non-violence the only answer to injustice? ӹ Why is the human heart the central battleground between good and evil? What did Jesus do to become victorious, and how is that victory ongoing? Wrap-Up 5 minutes Ask groups to write down 3 summary statements based on the classroom activities and discussion, and share them with the class. Statements should capture the idea that in Jesus Christ, love is the fulfillment of the law. Enrichment Option St. Ireneus pronounced, “The glory of God is a human being fully alive.” Have students write a 100-word essay in response to the questions: Is it impossible or unrealistic to live out the Beatitudes in order to pursue true goodness? Student responses should mention at least 3 of the main ideas discussed in the lesson. © SOPHIA INSTITUTE FOR TEACHERS 151 BACKGROUND ESSAY The Beatitudes and Moral Choices In December of 2006, Will Smith starred in a film he co-produced entitled “The Pursuit of Happyness.” Chris Garnder (Will Smith), a San Franciscan salesman, struggles mightily to support his son. His girlfriend abruptly leaves, and shortly thereafter Chris and his son Christopher Jr. (Jaden Smith) are evicted from their apartment. Chris cannot find meaningful or financially stable employment, leaving him and his son to stay in homeless shelters and eventually in the bathroom of a metro station. He ultimately lands a position as an intern at a highly competitive stockbroker firm, although still receiving no compensation or salary.     The Meaning and Message of the Beatitudes in the Sermon On the Mount (Matthew 5-7) Ranko Stefanovic Andrews University The Sermon on the Mount recorded in Matthew 5-7 is probably one of the best known of Jesus’ teachings recorded in the Gospels. This is the first of the five discourses in Matthew that Jesus delivered on an unnamed mount that has traditionally been located on the northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee near Capernaum, which is today marked by the Church of the Beatitudes. New Testament scholarship has treated the Sermon on the Mount as a collection of short sayings spoken by the historical Jesus on different occasions, which Matthew, in this view, redactionally put into one sermon.1 A similar version of the Sermon is found in Luke 6:20-49, known as the Sermon on the Plain, which has been commonly regarded as a Lucan variant of the same discourse. 2 The position taken in this paper is, first of all, that the Matthean and Lucan versions are two different sermons with similar content delivered by Jesus on two different occasions. 3 Secondly, it seems almost certain that the two discourses are summaries of much longer ones, each with a different emphasis, spiritual and physical respectively. Whatever position one takes, it appears that the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew is not just a collection of randomly selected pieces; the discourse displays one coherent literary theme. Jacobson To the Chinese Christians of our own time who along with survivors of the gulag and the jihad are giving the whole Church a fresh vision of what it means to be called “disciples of Jesus” INTRODUCTORY COMMENTS The Beatitudes and Woes of Jesus Christ are stark. Much of our teaching and preaching based on them is not. Jesus sets them out as ground rules for His disciples. He places them at the very beginning of His special instructions to them, whereas entire theological systems have treated them as an afterthought and relegated them to the end. The problem is that in Jesus’ instructions the Beatitudes are descriptive, not prescriptive. That is, they tell us what discipleship is, not what it ought to be. They spell out the everyday norms of discipleship, not its far off ideals, the bottom line, not the distant goal. This makes us most uncomfortable because, fitting us so poorly they call into question our very right to claim to be disciples of Jesus at all. There can be no question that they are addressed specifically to Jesus’ disciples, both the Beatitudes and the Woes. Matthew makes that plain in his way (Matthew 5:1-2) and Luke makes it plain in his way (Luke 6:20). The fact that Jesus singles them out from the crowds which are all around them, pressing in on them with their own expectations and demands, simply underscores the urgency Jesus felt to clarify what He was expecting of them by way of sheer contrast.

    The Journey to Freedom: A Fresh Look at the Beatitudes The Beatitudes aren’t isolated virtues, they're landmarks along a path of repentance that brings us near to the heart of God. BY KAREN HINCKLEY For most of the unbelievers I know, repentance conjures up an image of a thin-lipped man in a black suit pointing a bony finger and hissing, "Repent, sinner!" They see Christians as masochists groveling at an angry God's feet, flogging themselves bloody and staggering under impossible loads of responsibility. I've done my time in the grit- your-teeth school of repentance, so I understand where outsiders get their misconceptions. But how can I tell them what repentance really means? The people to whom Jesus spoke knew the Pharisees, an exemplary band of teeth-gritters and finger-pointers. So when He began to proclaim, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near" (Matthew 4:17), He had the same barrier to overcome that I have. Repent — turn around, change your thinking, soften your heart-what does this mean? A few verses later we find Jesus sitting on a hillside explaining. We call His opening summary "the Beatitudes," the blessings. Blessed, happy, highly favored are those who really manage to turn all the way around and change their whole way of thinking. The Beatitudes are a map of the landmarks on the journey of repentance. BLESSED POVERTY "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven" (Matthew 5:3). This is where the road begins. My spirit is the part of the inner me that relates personally to God and others.

They have brought comfort and hope to countless people throughout the centuries since Jesus spoke them. These 12 verses begin Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount and immediate follow where we left off last week with Jesus calling his first disciples and proclaiming to the world, “Repent (Turn) for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” So what is Beatitude anyway? Put simply, a beatitude is a blessing. It is announcement of God’s favor. It is a declaration of God’s grace. It is interesting Jesus’ sermon begins in this fashion. He begins not with words of instruction on what we should do but He begins with words of God’s favor. Fred Craddock states, “Appearing at the beginning, they (Beatitudes) say that God’s favor precedes all our endeavors.” Prior to our doing anything God speaks first and offers the promise of God’s grace. Anything that follows on our behalf is solely in response to what God has instituted first. Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount echoes God’s revelation of the law to Moses on Mount Sinai in Exodus which begins in a similar manner with God stating first, “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.” 1 And in the Beatitudes God’s blessing and favor is proclaimed to those the world would least expect. Not the elite, wealthy, powerful and privileged but rather Jesus announces blessings upon those whom society has deemed unworthy and left behind: the poor in spirit, those who mourn, the meek, those who hunger and thirst for justice, the merciful, the peacemakers, and those who are persecuted in seeking peace and justice in Christ’s name.
