(José Leite de Vasconcelos – Religiões da Lusitânia). 5 RESUMO Este estudo tem como objetivo compreender como acontecem as apropriações do discurso científico, por parte de grupos religiosos neopagãos, para a elaboração dos cultos a Endovélico e para a construção da identidade celta. O neopaganismo, categoria conceitual que se enquadra nas espiritualidades alternativas, baseia-se no cruzamento referencial entre discursos de imaginário social e discursos científicos para a construção de seus cultos politeístas. Inspirados na idealização de sociedades antigas, como a dos celtas, os neopagãos utilizam-se do conhecimento científico para legitimar suas crenças sobre povos ancestrais e sobre antigos deuses pagãos. Utilizou-se como metodologia a análise do discurso de três grupos neopagãos, a partir de entrevistas e de textos disponíveis em seus websites. No neopaganismo ibérico nota-se a busca pelo reavivamento de uma identidade celta ancestral de povos do Ocidente Peninsular, enquanto antigas divindades ibéricas pré-romanas são adoradas. Endovélico é considerado o deus mais importante do panteão lusitano ou celtibero, sendo atualmente cultuado no local onde antes existiu o santuário romano dedicado a este deus. ABSTRACT This study aims at understanding how the appropriations of scientific discourse take place, on the part of neo-pagan religious groups, for the elaboration of Endovellicus cults and for the construction of Celtic identity. Neopaganism is a conceptual category that fits into alternative spiritualities. Neopaganism is based on social imaginary and on the scientific discourses for the construction of its polytheistic cults. Inspired by the idealization of ancient societies, such as the Celts, Neopagans use scientific knowledge to legitimize their beliefs about ancestral peoples and about ancient pagan gods. The methodology consists of discourse analysis based on interviews and texts available on websites of three neo-pagan groups. In the Iberian neo-paganism, there is a revival of an ancestral Celtic identity of the peoples from the Western Peninsular. Ancient pre-Roman Iberian deities are worshiped in Iberian neo-paganism. Endovellicus is considered the most important god in ancient Iberian pantheon, and is currently worshiped in the place where the Roman sanctuary dedicated to this god existed before.     Pagan World 29 Pagan World 29 Year 8 Issue 1 March 21, 2006 Welcome to the 29th issue of Pagan World! After a one year hiatus, it is great to be back with my 'baby' Pagan World! A big thanks to Celeb for taking such good care of Pagan World during my one-year absence! L L A bit of history about Pagan World : This magazine began as a hard-copy only newsletter back in 1997, when Tony Kemp, who at the time was the International Coordinator of the PFI, realized that European members of the UK based Pagan Federation should have a newsletter for themselves, giving us more 'local' information than the UK oriented member magazine Pagan Dawn. So on top of all of his other PF work, in 1998 Tony published two issues of a newsletter that he called Europa . In March 1999, being buried under with writing his own books and other personal obligations, Tony Kemp handed over the editorship of Europa to me and his position as International Coordinator over to Morgana. We then immediately began to produce Europa every 3 months in both a hard-copy version (for members without an internet connection), as well as an online version. The online version served 3 important purposes: 1) it cut our costs greatly letting us use the extra cash to organize more conferences and activities 2) it allowed us to spread our Pagan wings worldwide 3) and last but not least, we killed less trees. It quickly became apparent that the online version 'worked'. Not only had the Pagan Federation branched out of the UK into Europe, but into the rest of the World.

    64 Journal for the Study of Religious Experience ‘Gods, Wights1 and Ancestors’: The Varieties of Pagan Religious Experience at Ancient Sacred Sites Jennifer Uzzell Department of Theology and Religion, University of Durham [email protected] This article explores anomalous experiences reported by people identifying as Pagan whilst visiting places of ancient religious significance in the UK and the US. The article seeks to establish the extent to which these experiences conform to William James’ (2016, pp. 380–381) descriptors of mystical experience as ineffable, noetic, transient and passive, and suggests that while some of the experiences described do conform to the traditional categories, others describe a different sort of experience, possibly arising from a very different world view, which is neither monotheistic nor monist and as such is not concerned with concepts such as transcendence in the way that James used these terms. The article suggests that an alternative definition of ‘transcendence’ is required to accommodate these accounts. Experiences such as those described here are real and meaningful to those who have them but have, to date, been under-represented in research into religious experience. The article concludes that more research is needed into religious experiences within the context of the ‘new animism’ (Harvey, 2006). One interesting aspect of this research concerned the construction in recent years of a number of long and round barrows, similar in outward appearance to Neolithic and Bronze Age constructions, but designed as a repository for modern cremated remains.

    The Experience of Wiccan Counsellors: An Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis Stuart James North A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of the West of England, Bristol for the degree of Professional Doctorate in Counselling Psychology Faculty of Health and Social Sciences, University of the West of England, Bristol August 2020 Word Count: 35,337 With grateful thanks to: my parents; my initiators and teachers in both Wicca and psychotherapy; my participants; and my supervisors. 2 Abstract This research examines the experience of Wiccan counsellors through interpretive phenomenological analysis (Smith et al 2009). Five Wiccans, whose professional accreditation would enable them to deliver some form of ‘talking therapy’ within the UK National Health Service, were interviewed in a semi structured format intended to capture participants’ experience as therapists and Wiccans. Emergent themes were: Developmental Spiritual Quest, which contained two subordinate themes; Transformative Mystical Experience and, in the case of the three female participants Spiritual Emancipation as Women. Secondly, Perception of Self as Outsider in that most participants saw themselves as eccentric to the mainstream. Weighting Experience over Rationalism addressed how most of the participants described reality. Fourthly, Balancing Spiritual Identity with Professional Role in that all participants worked to balance authenticity with understandings of ‘professionalism’ as articulated within clinical healthcare discourse. Spiritual Life Supports Work as Therapist reflected the sense that participant’s spiritual lives supported their clinical work. Employing Zinnbauer and Pargament’s (2000) framework describing religion and psychotherapy it was found that no participant adopted an exclusivist approach, rather they adopted either pluralistic or constructivist perspectives.

    PAGANISM AND NEO-PAGANISM OF THE 20-21st CENTURIES: ON THE TERMINOLOGY OF SLAVIC VARIATIONS OF “INDIGENOUS RELIGIONS” Roman Shizhensky Nizhny Novgorod State Pedagogical University O. Tyutina Nizhny Novgorod State Pedagogical University A burst of religions, which blew in spiritually dormant Russia in the last decades of the 20th century, fl ashed with a new force in the new millen- nium. Kaleidoscope of religious affi liation of Russians is very diverse and cur- rently is represented by the widest range of movements both of local and of foreign origin (Бурдо, Филатов, 2005-2008). One of hundreds of “religious projects”, existing and developing in modern Russia, is a religious and socio- political phenomenon of Slavic paganism. It is surprising that it has attracted hearts and souls of part of the national society and has caught an eye of scho- lars and the common people in the 20th century, but even in the 21st century there is still no universally accepted terminology applied to the phenomenon. At the heart of the problem there are rival groups represented by a block of an academic community, representatives of the media, researchers of other faiths, and, fi nally, by leaders of Slavic paganism. Th e problem is exacerbated by the fact that each of the parties involved usually describes the phenomenon in a biased way, seeing it through a prism of their religious, political, ethnic and other commitment. “Numerous studies on the subject [of modern paga- nism] diff er in their areas of analysis and methodological strategies. Precisely because of this omni-focused study so far it seems to be diffi cult enough to fi x exactly the essence of this phenomenon, to implement the categorization of its key characteristics and the basic patterns of operation” (Михеева 2009).

M organa and Lady Bara were the E new National Coordinators for the Netherlands F and I was the new National Coordinator for N A Belgium . So during the first week of M ay N G 1998, I went up to Ziest so that M organa and I A could put our heads together and exchange P ideas. We hit it off im m ediately and talked for E A hours. During the last 10 years M organa’s H T friendship has rescued m e from m yself m ore F than once… Here’s to you M organa and to the O next 10 years of friendship!
