Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized. -

Morning, evening and night they prayed the “divine services” of the Byzantine Church, and this study is the first to examine how these rituals shaped the way they wrote and compiled the Povest’ vremennykh let (Primary Chronicle, ca. 12th century), the earliest surviving East Slavic historical record. My principal argument is that several foundational accounts of East Slavic history—including the tales of the baptism of Princess Ol’ga and her burial, Prince Vladimir’s conversion, the mass baptism of Rus’, and the martyrdom of Princes Boris and Gleb—have their source in the feasts of the liturgical year. The liturgy of the Eastern Church proclaimed a distinctively Byzantine myth of Christian origins: a sacred narrative about the conversion of the Roman Empire, the glorification of the emperor Constantine and empress Helen, and the victory of Christianity over paganism. In the decades following the conversion of Rus’, the chroniclers in Kiev learned these narratives from the church services and patterned their own tales of Christianization after them. The ii result was a myth of Christian origins for Rus’—a myth promulgated even today by the Russian Orthodox Church—that reproduced the myth of Christian origins for the Eastern Roman Empire articulated in the Byzantine rite. -

Meawad Liturgy as Ethicizer: Cultivating Ecological Consciousness through a Coptic Orthodox Liturgical Ethos 1 – Introduction Eastern Orthodox Christianity’s recent expression of its ecological concern has been vast and strong, evidenced by its designation of September 1st as a day of prayer for the “protection of the environment” and also through the scholarly contributions of more than a dozen theologians and religious figures, including Patriarch Bartholomew, Elizabeth Theokritoff, and John Chryssavgis.1 Much of this witness can and does extend to Oriental Orthodoxy in numerous respects.2 Among others, some examples include similarities in the doctrine of creation, proper relation to non-human animals, spiritual degradation as a precursor to ecological degradation, and extending love of neighbor to include all of creation. Yet, analyzing ways that other families of Orthodoxy conceive of the relationship between ecology and theology—a promising endeavor—has remained largely untapped contemporarily. This project will examine the liturgical ethos of the Coptic Orthodox Church and how this ethos is effective in creating self-sustaining, ecologically aware communities. A more comprehensive version of this project would develop what might be called a politeia (behavior or ethos of a given community) of the Coptic Orthodox Church that would include monasticism and asceticism; fasting; agriculture and co-stewardship; and self-sustenance. -
Elevation of the Crosse
The Sunday of the Cross This morning we're celebrating the feast of the Elevation of the Cross. The correct date of the feast is tomorrow, September 14th. Normally we would have an Evening Divine Liturgy but since we cannot serve one this evening we would have had to serve the liturgy tomorrow morning. The Metropolitan has given the parishes permission to move the feast to today, therefore I chose to move it so that more could be part of the celebration. This feast day goes back to the finding of the True, Life-giving Cross by St. Helen the mother of St. Constantine the Great. In the year 326, She received permission and financing from her son go to Jerusalem in search for all the holy places where our Lord had been. One of the first things that she wanted to do was to find the True and Life-giving Cross. When she arrived in Jerusalem, she started making inquiries as to where it's location might be. Unfortunately, even the Bishop of Jerusalem did not know where the cross was. There was a Jew named Judah who had some documents which identified where Jesus had been crucified. He had inherited these documents from his father. They also showed where Jesus had been buried. He reluctantly gave these documents to St. Helen. Several weeks were spent excavating the site looking for the cross, but to know avail. One day St. Helen noticed a beautiful flower growing in a place by itself. It was what we refer to as sweet basil. -

Lazarus Saturday The miraculous raising of Lazarus from the dead by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is commemorated on the Saturday before Palm Sunday. The forty days of the Great Lent come to an end. On Palm Sunday, the Church celebrates the power of Christ over death and exalts Him as King in His triumphal entry into Jerusalem. These events take place just before the beginning of Holy Week and prepare us for the Resurrection of our Lord. 1. 5. MEDIEVAL AND EARLY RENAISSANCE Anonymous (French) Illuminated page from a Psalter in Latin, ca. 1200-1210 Ink, Pigments and gold on parchment 2002.15 Gilbreath-McLorn Fund This page comes from a Psalter, a bound collection of the 150 Psalms, which provided medieval readers with tools for private and communal devotions. Stylistically, this leaf resembles other manuscripts produced in Northeastern France, Paris and England during the reign of the French monarch Philip Augustus (1179-1223). The script is written in a Gothic liturgical hand, and the large illuminated initials and painted line-endings were created at the same time as the text. The Verso linear penwork in-fills and flourishes were probably added after 1250. The high quality of the decoration, together with the lavish use of gold and lapis blue, indicates that this page comes from a book made for a member of the royal court or a high- ranking cleric. These manuscripts contained psalms and prayers for recitation and devotions throughout the eight canonical hours of the day. In Books of Hours devoted to the Virgin Mary, an image of The Adoration of the Magi traditionally accompanies the text for sext, to be read during the mid-afternoon. -
