EP 3 143 930 A1) in collaboration with the University Hospital of Liège, Pneumology-Allergology, Prof. Renaud Louis and Florence Schleich on "Method for the diagnosis of airway disease inflammatory subtype". • US patent application (2018: ref. P75696US0) on "Method for the diagnosis of airway disease inflammatory subtype".

The invention relates to in vitro methods of diagnosing, prognosing and/or monitoring neutrophilic or eosinophilic airway inflammation in a subject, comprising determining the amount of one or more volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The invention further relates to methods of discriminating between different subtypes of airway inflammation comprising determining the amount of one or more VOCs. Personal contribution: Steering and applying the essential innovative analytics.

Research themes linked to professional track K Van Steen is heading an interdisciplinary research group focusing on Systems Genetics / Systems Medicine at the intersection of Biostatistics, Biomedicine and Bioinformatics with main pillar at the University of Liège (ULg) and secondary pillar at KU Leuven. She has recognized expertise in developing and applying methods to detect Gene-Gene and Gene-Environment interactions and in unifying biological and statistical evidence in genetic epidemiology. Accelerated by her participation in the FP7/PEOPLE network on “Machine Learning for Personalized Medicine”, she developed a growing interest in “Omics-Stratified Precision Medicine” and in “Multiscale Modelling”. Currently, her 3 main research lines (DESTinCT - interactions within and between omics layers of information; INTEGROMICS - data integration and multilevel modelling; P-STRUCT – structure detection in patients and populations for molecular reclassification of diseases) are converging into a focused, yet dynamic, strategy towards “Precision Medicine in Practice”.

Future projects are thus expected to be developed at the interface between the aforementioned research themes, hereby bridging Translational Research and Systems Medicine.
