Welcome to the Companion Events Extravaganza! Thank you for joining us for the 20th annual AKC National Obedience Championship (NOC) and the inaugural AKC Rally® National Championship. You have worked hard to meet the qualifications; we congratulate you and are pleased to welcome you and your dogs to these prestigious events. The National Obedience Championship (NOC) and Rally National Championship (RNC) are part of a larger event the AKC has named the “Extravaganza.” These events are being held in conjunction with the National Agility Championship (NAC). In total, the Extravaganza has attracted more than 2,000 dogs to compete for the highest honors in their sports. Please take the time to visit and appreciate the outstanding dogs and owners participating in each of these events. For the NOC, thousands of competitors have exhibited throughout the year in order to achieve top ranking for their breed in order to qualify for this event. The field has been narrowed to the top-ranking dogs in each breed, the top 25 dogs overall based on Obedience Trial Champion (OTCH) points and the Regional Qualifier winners. 127 teams will compete during the weekend for the honor of being named the AKC National Obedience Champion! The Rally National Championship will consist of four rally classes of competition – Novice, Advanced, Excellent and Rally Advanced Excellent. Dogs have qualified to enter the event by earning titles and high scores. 251 teams will compete in this inaugural championship that will culminate with the winner of the RAE class being named the first AKC Rally® National Champion! Special appreciation goes to our sponsors J & J Dog Supplies and Clean Run. Please take a moment to visit their booths and express your appreciation to their representatives. The AKC also expresses its appreciation to the over 60 volunteers that have offered their time and expertise to make this event a success. Without them, an event of this size would not be possible. The thirteen championship judges have been selected for their experience and sound judgment. The AKC thanks them for the time they have committed to these events and their dedication to the sports we all enjoy so much. All of us in Companion Events wish all of you the best of luck over the next three days and thank you for being here. Remember to enjoy each other’s company, the company of your dog and to enjoy the Extravaganza! I got started in obedience, because my wife was already showing a dog in obedience and she thought it would be a good idea for me to get a dog to train. Actually, this was after I tried to tell her what she should be doing with her dog as she was training. I was very fortunate to be able to put a UDX and OTCH on my first dog. I now have a dog which I have put both a TD and TDX on and am working on getting his VST and getting him in the obedience ring. I have also helped in the training and showing of two other dogs. I have helped with training classes for both obedience and rally and participated in fun matches for the Iowa City Dog Obedience Club. I enjoy judging and seeing all the dog and handler teams doing their work. My favorite experience came while I was judging a 4-H show. A young boy was in my ring and it came time for the stand for exam. The boy left his dog and I started to approach his dog; that is when the boy said, “I wouldn’t do that if I were you.” I stopped in my tracks and asked him, “Why? Would his dog bite?” and he replied with, “No, but he will move.” I have shared that story with many and I chuckle every time.
