Maritime Lodge combined celebrating their 25th Anniversary, with a Diamond Jubilee Garden party and the sun had put his hat on in support! The day started with a cake and soup making workshop from BNENC’s Positive Communities team, Charanjeet and Kerry . While this was going on other residents enjoyed getting pampered by a team of beauticians, who made all sparkle and shine at the party!

Pat one of our Kick-Start tutors was also on hand in the morning serving to uplift the residents, with her unique blend of Tai Chi mastery. In the afternoon the party was kicked off with the help of Guess who ? The of our very own Frank Prendergast who was presented with a tree in memory of his late wife Margret Prendergast. Margret, along with Sandra Smyth would have worked for Maritime for 25 years but unfortunately she passed away two years ago. However her memory still lives on there and this occasion was organised to say thanks for the hard work and dedication of long serving Sandra and the rest of the team including Maritime Lodge scheme manager Angela Devlin.

Angela went on to thank all at BNENC for making this event go off with a bang, BNENC staff then left after a long day and let the residents dance & party the evening away. . BNENC

Breckfield Vision is here!

Many residents may remember in our early days going back to when we started BNENC in 1996, of attending numerous meetings with Local Councillors, Planners, developers and other partners, of talks about new schools, new health centres, new housing and community resources. BNENC has played an important part in developing local strategies and in engaging and consulting local residents to find out exactly what it was that the community wanted and needed.

After many years of meetings, heated discussions and compromises as well as the The Parks Housing Development problematic Anfield Plus plans we feel that Breckfield now has a new face and a new exciting positive feel about it. You only have to walk through Stanley Park along Robson Street to Breck Road to see the vision that is now happening and taking place. Though there has been massive changes, BNENC continues to work with Partners on developing resources for the community and in fighting the dereliction that is left, the job goes on.

The latest development in the Community is Breckfield House a previous run down derelict building that created an eye sore on Breckfield Road North, this building was purchased by North Liverpool Academy to house our young peoples enterprise centre, a centre that will help to develop the business skills of our local young Entrepreneurs. Going Green With it’s latest electric vehicle Anfield Village Your Housing Group have been working with LCC to agree a way to improve the roads previously identified within the HMR clearance programme. The idea’s, which were consulted with residents in May 2012, include selective demolition and refurbishment, which may include knocking two homes into one to create a larger 3 bedroom home with a garden.

Phase 2 The Parks - Planning Your Housing Group has been delighted to have secured an agreed programme with Keepmoat to build a further 70 homes to rent on The Parks Development. Using Your Housing Group’s own resources and grant from the HCA, 10 bungalows and 12 apartments for older residents will be built, alongside 48 two and three bedroom homes. Work will begin on-site during the summer of 2012.

Programme of Works We are pleased to announce that work is due to start on site in December of what is termed Your Housing’s ‘Affordable Warmth Strategy’. The work will fall into a number of areas but the first stage has been to upgrade all our homes within Anfield/Breckfield which have an old inefficient boiler for a new one which will be cheaper for residents to run. Then on to properties, which are over 100 years old, we will be looking to introduce improved insulation to further reduce the costs to heat these homes. We have undertaken work to replace windows and doors on Oakfield Road and have been painting the exterior of our homes within the Phase 6/7 clearance area and along Anfield Road. We are reviewing what internal and exterior works can be completed to Elm Bank in addition to the Affordable Warmth Homes work that is planned but have in the meantime agreed to paint the exterior as this will improve the physical appearance. In total over £1.6m is expected to be spent in the next twelve months and the work is being coordinated by Arena Future our Social Enterprise subsidiary. Arena Future are being used as they have developed a network of small building companies via Step Clever who will be able undertake the majority of this work thereby supporting small local enterprises and the local economy.

The Breckfield Community played host to 3 Giants in April. The Giants formed the Sea Odyssey spectacular that roamed North Liverpool and The City centre over a 3 day period where seen by an estimated half a million people. Visitors flocked to the Streets in and around Breckfield that seen many streets and roads closed off, for this once in a lifetime event. The action began at 9.30am on Friday 20 April when the 30 foot Little Girl Giant & her pet dog woke up in Stanley Park. The Little Girl Giant then commenced her quest to receive news about her father, who died on the ill-fated Titanic. The next stop in her search is North Liverpool, part of the city which she sees as a hub of creativity, with passionate friendly people and rich in maritime heritage and beautiful parks. Unbeknown to the Little Girl Giant, her Uncle made a promise to scour the ocean floor for the shipwreck and put his brother to rest, and in doing so discovered a letter written by him to his beloved daughter. For the past 100 years he had walked across the ocean floor with the sole purpose of delivering the letter to its young owner, after they cover 23 miles, roaming the city in search of a family connection they met on the Sunday at the Liverpool Waterfront to crowds of onlookers who applauded the touching meeting.
