Need was felt for a theory to describe, correlate and predict the behaviour of the sub-atomic particles. The quantum theory, proposed by Max Planck and applied by Einstein and Bohr to explain different aspects of behaviour of matter, is an important milestone in the formulation of the modern concept of atom. In this unit, we will study how black body radiation, heat capacity variation, photoelectric effect and atomic spectra of hydrogen can be explained on the basis of theories proposed by Max Planck, Einstein and Bohr. They based their theories on the postulate that all interactions between matter and radiation occur in terms of definite packets of energy, known as quanta. Their ideas, when extended further, led to the evolution of wave mechanics, which shows the dual nature of matter -

Possible limitation s of quantum eld theory are viewed in the light of its history. I. SURVEY Quantum eld theory is the framework in which the regnant theories of the electroweak and strong interactions, which together form the Standard Mo del, are formulated. Quantum electro dynamics (QED), b esides providing a com- plete foundation for atomic physics and chemistry, has supp orted calculations of physical quantities with unparalleled precision. However, this relation is violated upon quantum superposition between the wave-state and particle-state of the quanton, which is caused by the quantum beamsplitter (QBS). Along another line, recent studies have considered quantum coherence C in the l1-norm measure as a candidate for the wave property. In this study, we propose an interferometer with a quantum which-path detector (QWPD) and examine the generalized duality relation based on C. We find that this relationship still holds under such a circumstance, but the interference between these two properties causes the full-particle property to be observed when the QWPD system is partially present. Using a pair of polarization-entangled photons, we experimentally verify our analysis in the two-path case. This study extends the duality relation between coherence and path information to the quantum case and reveals the effect of quantum superposition on the duality relation. -

5 Electron Configurations, Orbital Notation and Quantum Numbers Electron Configurations, Orbital Notation and Quantum Numbers Understanding Electron Arrangement and Oxidation States Chemical properties depend on the number and arrangement of electrons in an atom. Usually, only the valence or outermost electrons are involved in chemical reactions. The electron cloud is compartmentalized. We model this compartmentalization through the use of electron configurations and orbital notations. The compartmentalization is as follows, energy levels have sublevels which have orbitals within them. We can use an apartment building as an analogy. The atom is the building, the floors of the apartment building are the energy levels, the apartments on a given floor are the orbitals and electrons reside inside the orbitals. There are two governing rules to consider when assigning electron configurations and orbital notations. Along with these rules, you must remember electrons are lazy and they hate each other, they will fill the lowest energy states first AND electrons repel each other since like charges repel. Rule 1: The Pauli Exclusion Principle In 1925, Wolfgang Pauli stated: No two electrons in an atom can have the same set of four quantum numbers. This means no atomic orbital can contain more than TWO electrons and the electrons must be of opposite spin if they are to form a pair within an orbital. Rule 2: Hunds Rule The most stable arrangement of electrons is one with the maximum number of unpaired electrons. It minimizes electron-electron repulsions and stabilizes the atom. However, subsequent developments required us to envision the photon as an intrinsically quantum mechanical entity, whose basic physics is much deeper than can be explained by the simple ‘classical wave plus vacuum fluctuations’ picture.
