At the launch of the country's National Action Plan (NAP), the DENR chief for the phase-out of mercury-containing products and wastes, Cimatu stressed that making the country a mercury-free country should be a "shared responsibility." "(We need to) successfully c rry out the elimination of mercury from consimer products and other materials utilized in the industry o reduce the risk of human exposure and contamination of the environment," he said in his speech. "Of) the cleanup of Bor cay and the rehabilitation of Manila Bay vas possible, managing our mere waste (would CIMATU also be) certa nly possible with every onej of us working together." Crafted nder a project jointly i plemented by the DENR and the United Nations Industria Development Organization (UNIDO), NAP provides a detailed five-year full implementation document of the activities and actions that the government needs to undertake. The projects financed by the Swiss government is supported the Philippine government in managing and controlling mercury-containing I I lucts with a life cycle approach in accordance with the Mmamata and Basel C ntions. NAP is also a product of collaboration among 10 governtnent agencies. "The completion of the NAP likewise increases confidence in the country's readiness for the implementation of the Minamata Convention on Mercury," Cimatu noted. A copy of the NAP was already turned over to the DENR and it was received by the agency's Foreign Assisted and Special Projects Service Director Lourdes Wagan on behalf of Cimatu 1 t 30 July 2019 in Mandaluyong City. Earlier in March, DENR identified five bodies of wat in Luzon and Mindanao that have high levels of mercury, among which re Manila Bay in Metro Manila and Meycauyan River in Bulacan. The Minimata Convention is the world's rust legally binding treaty to phase out mercury. It was in 2013 when the Philippines alo with 127 other countries signed the convention regulating the use and trade of mercury. The Philippine Senate has yet to ratify the convention, which entered into force in August 2017, but Cimatu said the DENR has already "spearheaded the ratification process in consultation with the relevant government agencies and stakeholders." Further, the DENR chief revealed that the ratification document has already been endorsed by the Department of Foreign Affairs to the Office of the President.
