DIVISION I WOMEN’S

Highlights

Stanford edges Texas A&M for 17th championship: Junior ’s three-set win at No. 2 singles clinched a dramatic 4-3 victory for No. 12 seed Stanford over No. 3 seed Texas A&M at the 2013 Division I Women’s Tennis Championships May 21 at Illinois. Stanford, the most storied program in NCAA women’s tennis history, claimed its 17th Division I championship overall and seventh under head coach Lele Forood at the Kahn Outdoor Tennis Complex on the Illinois campus. The Cardinal defeated Florida, the two-time defend- ing champion, 4-3, in the semifinals. “It’s a great feeling,” said Forood. “For Kristie Ahn to clinch is just poetic justice because she’s been the missing player for the last two years [due to injuries] at the end of the season, and we weren’t able to get it done without her, and when we got her back, we got it done.” An ankle injury ended Ahn’s freshman year during the postseason. She played in only three dual matches her sophomore season as she battled an assortment of injuries. Stanford became the lowest-seeded squad to capture an NCAA title. The Cardinal knocked off the tournament’s Nos. 5, 4, 1 and 3 seeds during a span of five days. Only junior and senior Stacey Tan had competed in more than two NCAA tournament matches before this season. Sensing an opportunity against Texas A&M, a newcomer to the NCAA title match scene under its second-year coach Howard Joffe, Stanford was up to the task early on. The Cardinal claimed the doubles point, taking a 1-0 lead. With the matches split on the top two courts, senior Natalie Dillon and fresh- man Krista Hardebeck pulled away from the Aggies’ sister combo of Ines Deheza and Paula Deheza by an 8-5 margin. In singles play, Stanford upped its lead to 2-0 when Tan defeated Ines Deheza 7-5, 6-3 at the No. 4 spot. In No. 1 singles, Texas A&M’s Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar surprised everyone by blanking Gibbs, 6-0, in the first set, becoming the first opponent to accomplish the feat in Gibbs’ 120 career matches. Gibbs, the reigning NCAA singles champion, continued to struggle, but then flipped the switch. Trailing 2-0 in the second set, Gibbs pro- ceeded to rattle off 12 consecutive games for a 0-6, 6-2, 6-0 triumph. Although they were down 3-0, the Aggies weren’t done. Anna Mamalat, a late addition to the lineup, defeated Ellen Tsay, 6-1, 7-5, at the No. 5 spot, trimming the deficit to 3-1. Nazari Urbina made sure Hardebeck would not provide the clincher in a 6-3, 7-6 (3) win at No. 3 singles. Stefania Hristov eventually shook off hard-charging Natalie Dillon at the No. 6 position, winning 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. Just like that, the match was tied. Ahn had taken her first set, 7-5, before Cristina Stancu won the second frame, 6-4. Tied at 2-2 in the deciding set, Ahn put her foot on the gas and placed the championship hopes of the Cardinal on her back. After a series of championship points, Stancu belted a forehand that sailed wide, and Ahn prepared herself for the ensuing dogpile after taking the final set, 6-2. In individual competition, Stanford’s Gibbs defeated Nebraska’s Mary Weatherhold, 6-2, 6-4, to repeat as the singles champion. She be- came the sixth Division I women’s tennis player to win two titles, and it was the 14th singles title for the Cardinal. Kaitlyn Christian and became the first pair from Southern California to win the doubles title, defeating UCLA’s and Skylar Morton, 6-4, 6-3. 2 DIVISION I Women’s TENNIS—Team Results
