3 Pastoral Organisation Form Group Organisation

Students are grouped into eight mixed ability form groups, guided and led overall by a Progress Leader.

Each form group will have a Form Tutor who is the main contact for any issues that may arise. The Form Tutor has responsibility for the day-to-day welfare of your son/daughter and will monitor their progress and attainment throughout the year. The form group is a vital part of the educational experience at Culcheth High School and is central to the teaching of many subject areas.

There will be an opportunity for you to meet your child’s Form Tutor during the Autumn term to discuss how well he/she has settled into high school. Progress Leader

The Progress Leader for Year 7 is Miss Butler; she has responsibility for monitoring student achievement, progress and welfare and working closely with Form Tutors. Contacting The School

If parents need information or help, they are requested to contact the Form Tutor who will be happy to assist, and if required, make an appointment to discuss matters further.

An active partnership between home and school helps ensure the well-being of each student. Working together, we will ensure the students are happy, enjoy school and achieve their full potential

7 Organisational Details continued ... Absences

Parents/Carers should inform the school, as soon as possible, by telephone if a student is absent for any reason.

Tel: 01925 768577

All absences must be explained by a note from parents or a medical certificate on return to school. Holidays In Term Time

The school, together with the national government and local authority, has become increasingly concerned about the number of school days which students are missing as a result of taking holidays in school time.

All absences not agreed by the Headteacher count as unauthorised. Parents/carers who wish to take their children out of school need to write to the Headteacher to explain the circumstances. Reasons regarding reduced cost of holidays and avoidable situations will not be authorised. Holidays will not be authorised unless circumstances are exceptional.

Medical/Dental Appointments

Appointments in school time can only be authorised: • if the student is collected by a parent/carer • by an adult authorised by the parent/carer • on receipt of a written request from the parent/carer to the Progress Leader

A dental or medical appointment card is not sufficient authority for a student to be released from school. Please note - a dental ‘check-up’ should be arranged outside of school hours. Late Arrival - Early Departure

Students arriving after 8:45am will be marked as late by their Form Tutor in registration. Every student arriving in school any time after registration (8:55am) must report to Student Services and sign in. Students arriving after 8:55am will be marked as late. The Withington Avenue entrance will be locked at 8:40am so all late students will need to enter at the school’s main entrance on Road. Students arriving after this time will not get a mark for that session and will be marked absent for the morning session. Any student who arrives late to school without a valid reason will receive a lunchtime detention on the same day.

Students leaving school early for any reason should sign out at Student Services and wait there until collected by a parent/carer.

8 Organisational Details continued ... Illness in School

Any student who feels unwell in school should report to Student Services. They should not contact parent/ carers directly as this is the school’s responsibility.

Students should not leave the school premises without permission. Change of Address / Telephone Number

It is important that any changes of address, telephone number or emergency telephone number should be communicated immediately to the Form Tutor, in writing. Personal Possesions

The school insurance policy does not include cover for the loss of personal possessions. Students are advised not to bring in items of significant value and should always leave their school bags in a safe place. • All equipment and items of clothing should be marked with the student’s name. • Lockers are available to all students with no rental fee but a £5 returnable deposit will be needed. The school cannot be held responsible for items which go missing from the lockers. • Mobile phones/MP3 players should not be used on the premises during school time. If students break this rule, items will be confiscated. • Students bring their personal possessions to school at their own risk. The school is not liable for the theft or damage to students’ personal possessions such as mobile phones etc. First Day Arrangements

• The Autumn term begins on Wednesday 4 September 2019 • Students are to assemble in the School Hall at 8:40am. • They will be met by their Form Tutors who will prepare them for the day ahead. • Period 1 will be spent with their Form Tutor. • Periods 2 to 5 students will follow their timetable. • On their first day, students must bring a pencil case including pen, pencil, ruler, rubber and some coloured pencils. • During their first week, students will be provided with a school planner, exercise books/folders and they will be told of any other equipment they may need to buy. Homework

Students need to develop independent learning skills. At the beginning of each school year, students will receive a personal planner.

Homework tasks will include reading, writing, drawing and learning. All tasks set should be entered into the planner by the student according to the timetable.

We ask parents to check regularly that homework set has been completed and then to sign the planner weekly. Form Tutors will also monitor the student planner.

Sample planner below.

11 10 Top Tips for Students’ Organisation Please help your child with ...

1. Packing their bag the night before school.

2. Checking that they have completed all homework and ticked it off in their planner.

3. Completing their homework as it comes in and not leaving it to build up.

4. Planning their route to school and putting out any outdoor clothing they may need.

5. Keeping their pencil case topped up with good working equipment.

6. Checking they have enough money for buses and lunch.

7. Checking their timetable each weekend and planning for food technology ingredients, P.E. equipment and any special notes or letters which need returning.

8. Not letting things worry them. Always get them to talk to their teacher, form tutor or a friend.

9. Always having a good breakfast before coming to school or at school in the breakfast club. It is hard for students to concentrate on their work in they are hungry.

10. Bringing a reusable sports water bottle so that they can remain hydrated during the day.

12 Information on Progress

It is important that parents/carers are kept informed of student progress and conduct. We provide a number of different opportunities to share information. However, we welcome enquiries or visits to the school at any time. Target Setting

Targets are set for all students at the start of the Autumn Term. Key Stage 3 students are given a percentage target. This is the percentage they should try to achieve or exceed by the end of Year 8 in all assessment tasks. Assessment

In class, students will undertake Quality Marked Assessments (QMAs). These assessments help to inform students, teachers and parents about progress and success or barriers in learning to be addressed. The amount of QMAs set in a subject depends on the amount of curriculum time. On Track Ladder

Students and parents can use the ‘on track’ ladders in student planners anytime to review QMA scores and see if attainment is staying on track to reach or exceed the end of Year 8 percentage target. Termly Progress Reviews

A progress review is sent directly home to parents every term. This report will provide you with information from each of your child’s subject teachers, giving an indication on: behaviours for learning, engagement in learning and homework. In addition the Progress Review will report one QMA grade per subject for the term. Annual Achievement and Progress Report

At the end of the Summer Term you will receive a longer report with a written comment from your child’s form tutor commenting on progress during the year and the contributions made to wider school life. Parents’ Evening

A Parents’ Evening is held annually. This is an opportunity for parents/carers to discuss progress with subject staff. An extra ‘settling-in’ Parents’ Evening takes place for Year 7 in the Autumn term. Behaviour Policy

The ethos of a school is created by the people who work in it. At Culcheth High School we aim to maintain a disciplined, orderly and friendly atmosphere within which everyone in the school treats each other with courtesy, respect and tolerance. We believe in the importance of encouraging students to behave in a caring, co-operative and self-disciplined manner. Students are expected to develop a clear sense of right and wrong. A full copy of this policy is available on the school website along with other policies useful to parents/carers.

There are a range of sanctions available to staff when students misbehave: • Verbal warnings. • Detentions. • Removal from class. • Report cards. • Internal isolation. • Exclusion from school.

In such situations we liaise with parents/careers and work together to improve behaviour and attitudes.

School Rules, Students should ...

• Remember that they represent themselves and the school at all times before, during and after school. • Be polite and show respect to everyone. • Come fully prepared for lessons and follow instructions from staff first time, every time. • Wear their uniform smartly with pride at all times. • Remember that this is their school and look after it. • Look after school property and put litter in the bins. • Eat and drink in the right place at the right time. • Walk around the school sensibly and quietly. (Always keep to the left.) Behaviour Policy continued ...

Classroom Rules

• Arrive on time, line up quietly in correct uniform ready to work for each lesson. Follow instructions from staff first time, every time • Student planner and lesson equipment must be on your desk throughout the lesson • Show respect by listening carefully when the teacher or another person is talking and stand when a member of staff enters the room • Put up your hand and wait for permission to speak • Always try your best without disturbing others. Ensure your mobile technology is switched off and out of sight • Stand in silence, behind your chairs, at the end of the lesson with correct uniform until you are dismissed Rewards

Praise and encouragement often changes behaviour in a positive way. Our rewards system has several elements: • Pastoral and departmental postcards. • Headteacher letters home to parents. • Progress Leaders Special Awards and Achievement Awards. • Lesson Behaviour Monitor to score each lesson. 1=outstanding; 2= good (our expectation); 3 = requires improvement; 4= serious concerns • Celebration Evening.

Awards are made to students for commendable conduct and high standards or impressive improvement in academic work. We use a consistent rewards system across the school in Years 7 to 11. This rewards system is known as #WeAreCHS and students can earn ‘Respect, Honesty, Excellence’ tickets from their staff for upholding our school values. Prize ticket draws are made every three weeks with a range of prizes.

15 #WeAreCHS

At Culcheth High School we assume every lesson will be at least good. Students are awarded a 1 - 4 grade for each lesson according to their progress and behaviour. Passes will not be issued for students to visit the shops or takeaways. • A cafeteria system operates in our Curie Building for hot and cold meals. • Sandwich stalls operate predominantly for those students who prefer to eat on the go. • The price of a standard meal and a drink is approximately £2.30. Additional items for break can be purchased as required. • A choice of menu is available, with a price list displayed. • Students taking part in lunchtime activities need to collect a pass from the department (sport, music etc) and order a ‘grab and go’ lunch. All students entitled to free school meals will have their biometric account automatically credited with the appropriate amount of credit on a weekly basis.

19 General Notes Independent Learning Centre

The Independent Learning Centre is open Monday through to Friday 8am - 3pm. It is a hive of activity throughout the day. We have well stocked shelves, containing fiction, non-fiction and reference titles. The ILC offers a warm, welcoming environment where students can read for pleasure or complete homework. All students in Year 7 follow a programme of timetabled library lessons in conjunction with the English Department. In these lessons they will learn how to find a non-fiction book using the Dewey system; techniques to find a fiction book which interests them and practise their research skills using contents and index pages effectively.

Lost Property

Students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own property. Those who find property should hand it in to Student Services. Enquiries for lost articles should be made initially at Student Services at morning break.

Cycles

Students may bring cycles to school, at their own risk. Cycling on school premises is not allowed. Cycles must be locked securely when left in the cycle shed by King Block in the quad area.
