Previous meetings • The sides are meeting for the first time in UEFA competition. • Lyon's record in 16 meetings with Italian sides is W7 D4 L5 (W3 D3 L2 at home; W4 D1 L3 away). Lyon met Italian opponents in the quarter-finals of the 1998/99 UEFA Cup, winning 2-0 at home against Bologna FC, but only after a 3- 0 defeat in Italy. • Juventus's 20 encounters with French sides have ended W11 D4 L5 (W3 D2 L5 in France; W8 D2 L0 at home). They are without a win in both their last three away games and their last three matches overall against French clubs, but have never lost at home to Ligue 1 opponents. Match background • Lyon are unbeaten in five UEFA Europa League home games since the start of the group stage (a draw and then four wins) but scored as many in their 4-1 round of 16 first-leg victory against FC Viktoria Plzeň as they had in their previous four European home outings. • In 14 games European since they started the season in the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round, Lyon have scored 14 goals, conceding ten. • Juventus are unbeaten in four games since entering the UEFA Europa League in the round of 32 (W3 D1), during which they have conceded only once. Qualifying included, they are unbeaten in 14 UEFA Europa League games (W7 D7) since bowing out of the 2009/10 round of 16 with a 4-1 loss at Fulham FC. • Lyon have reached their sixth major UEFA quarter-final having lost the first four before overcoming FC Girondins de Bordeaux in the 2009/10 UEFA Champions League last eight en route to a semi-final exit to FC Bayern München. They last reached the UEFA Cup quarter-finals in 1998/99, losing to Bologna. • Lyon are the first Ligue 1 team to reach the last eight of the competition since the advent of the UEFA Europa League. • Juventus have reached their 27th UEFA quarter-final, with the overall record W18 L8. However, they are currently on their longest last-eight losing streak, having lost in their last three ties, all in the UEFA Champions League: to Liverpool FC (2004/05), Arsenal FC (2005/06) and FC Bayern München (2012/13). They last won a last-eight tie in 2002/03, defeating FC Barcelona 3-2 on aggregate in the UEFA Champions League, which ended a run of six successive quarter-final successes. • Their record in UEFA Cup quarter-final ties is W5 L3. Team facts • Yoann Gourcuff (AC Milan 2006 to 2009) is the only Lyon player with Serie A experience; Andrea Pirlo was a team- mate during his time at San Siro, as was Juve's reserve goalkeeper Marco Storari. • Stephan Lichtsteiner played in France for LOSC Lille from 2005 to 2008: his record against Lyon was W2 D1 L3. • Juventus defender Martin Cáceres and Lyon counterpart Mouhamadou Dabo played together at Sevilla FC in 2010/11. • Lyon are one of three sides in the quarter-finals who have yet to win a major UEFA club trophy, along with AZ Alkmaar and FC Basel 1893.

That run comprised seven wins and five draws. • Les Verts' nine-game unbeaten home run in Europe stretches back to the quarter-finals of the 1980/81 UEFA Cup, when a team featuring UEFA President Michel Platini lost 4-1 to Ipswich Town FC at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard.

  • Anti-Black Racism and the Foreign Black Other: Constructing Blackness and the Sporting Migrant
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Illinois Digital Environment for Access to Learning and Scholarship Repository ANTI-BLACK RACISM AND THE FOREIGN BLACK OTHER: CONSTRUCTING BLACKNESS AND THE SPORTING MIGRANT BY MUNENE FRANJO MWANIKI DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2014 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Margaret Kelley, Chair Professor Tim Liao Associate Professor Moon-Kie Jung Associate Professor Monica McDermott ABSTRACT The popularity and globalization of sport has led to an ever-increasing black athletic labor migration from the global South to, primarily, the U.S. and Western European countries. While the hegemonic ideology surrounding sport is that it brings different people together and ameliorates social boundaries, sociologists of sport have shown this to be a gross simplification. Instead, sport is often seen to reinforce and recreate social stereotypes and boundaries, especially as it regards race and the black athlete in body and culture. At best we can think of sport as a contested terrain for both maintaining and challenging racial norms and boundaries. The mediated black athlete has thus always, for better or worse, impacted popular white perceptions of blackness broadly and globally. While much work has been done to expose the workings of race and racism in sport, studies have tended to homogenize black populations and have not taken into account the varying histories and complexities of, specifically, black African migrant athletes.

  • FC Steaua Bucuresti V Real Betis Balompié PRESS KIT
FC Steaua Bucuresti v Real Betis Balompié PRESS KIT Lia Manoliu, Bucharest Thursday, 9 March 2006 - 19:00 local time Round of 16 - Matchday 10 FC Steaua Bucuresti were undone by Spanish opposition at this stage of the UEFA Cup last season, but will be looking to avoid the same fate when they line up against Real Betis Balompié in the last 16. Almost 12 months ago to the day the Romanian side saw their hopes ended by Villarreal CF at El Madrigal as Argentinian playmaker Juan Román Riquelme led the home team to a 2-0 victory. •A 3-1 first-leg victory proved enough to see Steaua negotiate their way through their first knockout round tie against SC Heerenveen. Nicolae Dica, Dorin Goian and Sorin Paraschiv were all on target as Cosmin Olaroiu's team recovered from conceding an early Arnold Bruggink goal in the Netherlands and although Heerenveen pulled one goal back in Bucharest, it was Steaua that progressed. It was the continuation of some fine form in this competition by the former European champions, who breezed through the group stage after an unbeaten campaign that brought eight points, including comprehensive victories against RC Lens and Halmstads BK - both at home. •Betis were also indebted to a two-goal first-leg lead as they edged past AZ Alkmaar to secure a place in the last 32. Brazilian pair Diego Tardelli and Robert were both on target as late goals earned the side a significant advantage in Seville, which the Dutch team clawed back at the Alkmaarderhout to take the tie to extra time.
