AS Saint-Etienne - Werder Bremen MATCH PRESS KIT Geoffroy-Guichard, Saint-Etienne Wednesday 18 March 2009 - 20.30CET (20.30 local time) Matchday 9 - Round of 16, second leg Contents 1 - Match background 6 - Competition facts 2 - Squad list 7 - Team facts 3 - Match officials 8 - Competition information 4 - Domestic information 9 - Legend 5 - Match-by-match lineups This press kit includes information relating to this UEFA Cup match. For more detailed factual information, and in-depth competition statistics, please refer to the matchweek press kit, which can be downloaded at: http://www.uefa.com/uefa/mediaservices/presskits/index.html Match background Despite dealing AS Saint-Etienne their first UEFA competition defeat since November 1982 in the first leg at the Weserstadion, Werder Bremen know that their UEFA Cup Round of 16 tie is far from over. • Having knocked out AC Milan in the previous round, Bremen made a bright start against St-Etienne, with Naldo putting them into a 20th-minute lead, but they failed to increase their advantage after that and head to France with the outcome still in the balance. • St-Etienne had been unbeaten in their 12 previous European games since losing 4-0 at FC Bohemians Praha in the second leg of their 1982/83 UEFA Cup second-round tie on 3 November 1982. That run comprised seven wins and five draws. • Les Verts' nine-game unbeaten home run in Europe stretches back to the quarter-finals of the 1980/81 UEFA Cup, when a team featuring UEFA President Michel Platini lost 4-1 to Ipswich Town FC at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard. -

Anti-Black Racism and the Foreign Black Other: Constructing Blackness and the Sporting Migrant
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Illinois Digital Environment for Access to Learning and Scholarship Repository ANTI-BLACK RACISM AND THE FOREIGN BLACK OTHER: CONSTRUCTING BLACKNESS AND THE SPORTING MIGRANT BY MUNENE FRANJO MWANIKI DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2014 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Margaret Kelley, Chair Professor Tim Liao Associate Professor Moon-Kie Jung Associate Professor Monica McDermott ABSTRACT The popularity and globalization of sport has led to an ever-increasing black athletic labor migration from the global South to, primarily, the U.S. and Western European countries. While the hegemonic ideology surrounding sport is that it brings different people together and ameliorates social boundaries, sociologists of sport have shown this to be a gross simplification. Instead, sport is often seen to reinforce and recreate social stereotypes and boundaries, especially as it regards race and the black athlete in body and culture. At best we can think of sport as a contested terrain for both maintaining and challenging racial norms and boundaries. The mediated black athlete has thus always, for better or worse, impacted popular white perceptions of blackness broadly and globally. While much work has been done to expose the workings of race and racism in sport, studies have tended to homogenize black populations and have not taken into account the varying histories and complexities of, specifically, black African migrant athletes. -

FC Steaua Bucuresti V Real Betis Balompié PRESS KIT
FC Steaua Bucuresti v Real Betis Balompié PRESS KIT Lia Manoliu, Bucharest Thursday, 9 March 2006 - 19:00 local time Round of 16 - Matchday 10 FC Steaua Bucuresti were undone by Spanish opposition at this stage of the UEFA Cup last season, but will be looking to avoid the same fate when they line up against Real Betis Balompié in the last 16. Almost 12 months ago to the day the Romanian side saw their hopes ended by Villarreal CF at El Madrigal as Argentinian playmaker Juan Román Riquelme led the home team to a 2-0 victory. •A 3-1 first-leg victory proved enough to see Steaua negotiate their way through their first knockout round tie against SC Heerenveen. Nicolae Dica, Dorin Goian and Sorin Paraschiv were all on target as Cosmin Olaroiu's team recovered from conceding an early Arnold Bruggink goal in the Netherlands and although Heerenveen pulled one goal back in Bucharest, it was Steaua that progressed. It was the continuation of some fine form in this competition by the former European champions, who breezed through the group stage after an unbeaten campaign that brought eight points, including comprehensive victories against RC Lens and Halmstads BK - both at home. •Betis were also indebted to a two-goal first-leg lead as they edged past AZ Alkmaar to secure a place in the last 32. Brazilian pair Diego Tardelli and Robert were both on target as late goals earned the side a significant advantage in Seville, which the Dutch team clawed back at the Alkmaarderhout to take the tie to extra time. -
