Since its inception in 2014, the Tournament has quickly become a launching pad for New Zealand’s most promising young rugby players and an integral part of the rugby calendar. It has been pretty special to see some of the young men who have played in the Tournament take the next steps on their rugby pathway, and I expect there will be many more to follow in their footsteps in this year’s Tournament. Jock Hobbs was a really special man and it’s fitting that this Tournament is named for him and his lasting contribution to rugby. He was a player, coach and administrator at many different levels and knowing his love for the game and passion for securing its future, I am sure he would have been delighted to see this Tournament do so well. It is also very special that we are able to recognise the incredible on and off field service to the game provided by Graham Mourie, Sir Michael Jones and the late Sir DJ Graham, through the trophies that carry their names and are on the line this week. Over 400 young players, match officials, coaches and team management will take part in this week-long rugby event, which features 24 games of rugby, development workshops and position-specific coaching clinics. I hope you all enjoy the experience, make new connections and get as much as you can out of what’s on offer. New Zealand Rugby would like to thank the King Country Rugby Union and Taupo District Council for their incredible work to ensure the Tournament is successful and enjoyable. The Tournament has even more significance this year being held within the King Country Rugby territory, given the sad passing of Sir Colin Meads in August. A huge thanks also to the volunteers whose work is essential to this Tournament.
