In her wandering, the author was often lost; as she put it, "I tried a lot of absurd things." The desire to find the Way, however, was strong; she continued her journey to its end. "Way" translates the Japanese michi (also pronounced to* or do* in compounds). It is the same as the Chinese Tao. The Way is two things at once. It is Truth or Reality, in the religious sense of the way things ultimately are, the true nature of life and the universe. It is also a path, a way of life that is in full harmony with the true nature of things. For those who have not yet found the Way, the path leads them to realize the Truth for themselves, experientially; for those who have found it, the path is a vehicle for expressing that knowledge, a way of living that is a natural and spontaneous manifestation of that knowledge. Of her search for the Way, Satomi-san says, "I journeyed because I desired to find the Way of Truth, the Way which could put an end to all suffering." One who knows the Truth, the Way, will no longer suffer, for one who knows the Way can no longer be at odds with life. To know the Way is to see the "big picture," to see life, change, time, existence as they are in themselves, not through the eyes of a frightened being re- Page x sentful of infirmity, death, and the other vicissitudes of life. To know the Way is to know life and to know oneself as an individual at home in the cosmos. It is to see one's rightful position in life, one's belongingness, not in a self-centered way, but in a way in which the infinite interrelationships of oneself and all other beings in the cosmosboth animate and inanimateare made clear. Becoming free of egotism, one who knows the Way sees things the way they are, rather than how she or he might wish they were. Thus one no longer struggles in vain against the inevitabilities of life, but accepts whatever life may bring, with a calm and peaceful heart. Thus, to know the Way is to be free of care, free of suffering, and to live in a truthful, sincere, and harmonious manner. In Japanese culture, there are many ways, or paths, to discover or express the Way. One of the distinctive features of Japanese culture is the abundance of traditional arts, crafts, and religious disciplines, determined practice of any of which is said to lead to realization of the Way. The martial arts fall into this categoryjudo *, aikido*, kendo* (the way of the sword) as do bushido* (the way of the warrior), shodo* (calligraphy), chado* (the way of Tea), shido (the way of poetry), and many other arts. Among religious traditions, Zen Buddhism is directly equated with the Way by its adherents; the Japanese national religious tradition, Shinto, the Way of the gods, ultimately hopes to bring humanity into harmony with the gods. The Way, then, may appear to take many forms. All of these, however, are felt to be expressive of a single reality, a reality best demonstrated not in terms of creed or doctrine, of which all these traditions are shy, but in the actions and life of one who knows. This book is the record of the life and thought of a Japanese woman who sought such a Way. Page xi There are two major sections to this book: the translation of Satomi-san's autobiography and my commentary on the autobiography. Though the commentary frequently refers to the autobiography, each part can be read independently of the other. Thus the reader may choose to read the autobiography first; the notes to the text should be adequate to clarify unfamiliar terms, and the commentary could be read afterward to deepen the reader's understanding. Alternatively, the reader may prefer to read the commentary first as an introduction that elucidates the philosophical and religious ideas and practices as well as the historical context of Satomi-san's story and thus enriches the reading of the autobiography. The commentary can also serve as a brief introduction to popular Japanese religion in the modern period; the autobiography then, literally, brings this discussion to life. Page xiii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS FIRST THANKS must go to Kahawai: Journal of Women and Zen and its former co-editor, Susan Murcott, who introduced me to Satomi- san's manuscript and arranged contacts necessary for the translation to proceed. I am grateful to Yamada Koun * Roshi*, president of the lay Buddhist organization Sambokyodan*, for permission to translate this text, which first appeared in its journal, Kyosho*. Yamada Roshi* took time out of his busy schedule to discuss with me his own personal knowledge of Satomi-san. Roshi Robert Aitken of Hawaii introduced me to the Japanese Zen circle that I needed to meet and also wrote a remembrance of Satomi-san, parts of which I have incorporated into the Epilogue. Sincere thanks to several of Satomi-san's friends with whom I was able to speak in Japan: Shimomura Mitsuko, who remarked on the deep impression Satomi-san had made on her and also encouraged the project in tangible ways; Igarashi Kazuo, a very close friend from both Tokyo and Hokkaido days; and Miyazaki-san, the group's historian, all of whom shared their personal knowledge of Satomi-san in vivid anecdotes and fond memories. Thanks likewise to Satomi-san's daughter Satomi Kuniko, who not only welcomed me into her home for an evening of discussion, but also searched through her belongings for pictures and mementos of her mother and personally escorted me up the hill to the "sacred site" Satomi- san had established across from the Satomi home. Page xiv A number of scholars greatly helped me in understanding some of the particulars of Satomi-san's story. Akiba Yutaka checked the translation against the original. Anne-Marie Bouchy met with me on a number of occasions to discuss the miko and introduce me to the world of practicing miko. Maggie Childs, my colleague at Southern Illinois University, read through the translation. Gorai Shigeru spoke with me about popular Japanese religion and Shinto. Minoru Kiyota gave me encouragement and many useful suggestions, and clarified for me several points in Buddhist thought that were used in odd ways in the text. Nagao Gadjin explained a number of Buddhist technical terms and usages, and also personally traced an exceedingly obscure reference for me. Yanagida Seizan discussed with me at length the Zen figures, sayings, and ideas that appear in the text and also shared with me his thoughts on the relationship between philosophy and practice in Zen.
