Narayana* INTRODUCTION India occupies the second place in the production of milk in the world. The strategy adopted to achieve such remarkable growth in milk production has been a replication of the `Anand pattern' of co-operative dairying in other parts of India using the proceeds of European Economic Commission (EEC) dairy surpluses donated to India under the Operation Flood (OF) programme. The Indian dairy co- operative strategy has, however, proved to be fiercely controversial. One of the major criticisms of the strategy has been that too much focus on transforming the production and marketing technology along western lines has led to a situation where the policy 'took care of the dairy animal but not the human beings who own the animal'. Some dairy unions have come forward to set up foundations and trusts to address the development problems of milk producers. The well-known ones are, The Thribhuvandas Foundation' at Anand, Visaka Medical, Educational and Welfare Trust, and Varana Co-operative Society. They mainly focus on health and educational needs of milk producers and employees. These pioneering efforts have inspired other milk unions. The Malabar Regional Co-operative Milk Producers' Union (MRCMPU)2 has recently registered a welfare trust named, Malabar Rural Development Foundation (MRDF). The mission objective of MRDF is to make a sustainable improvement in the quality of life of dairy farmers by undertaking specific interventions. The planning of interventions for the welfare of dairy farmers in the Malabar region by MRDF called for an understanding of them in the larger social context. -

HUMAN RIGHTS & HUMAN WELFARE Untouchability Today: The Rise of Dalit Activism By Christine Hart On July 19, 2010, the Hindustan Times reported that a Dalit (“untouchable”) woman was gang- raped and murdered in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The crime was an act of revenge perpetrated by members of the Sharma family, incensed over the recent elopement of their daughter with a man from the lower-caste Singh family. Seeking retributive justice for the disgrace of the marriage, men from the Sharma family targeted a Dalit woman who, with her husband, worked in the Singh family fields. Her death was the result of her sub-caste status; while the crime cost the Singh family a valuable worker, the perceived value of her life was less than upper-caste individuals. In this case, the perpetrators of the crime were arrested, but similar atrocities are committed with frequency and impunity throughout India as a result of the entrenched practice of untouchability. Overview of Untouchability Caste discrimination, manifested through an array of “untouchability practices,” is an entrenched part of daily life in India. This “hidden apartheid” impacts more than 160 million Dalits —the victims, survivors, and challengers of the practice, as well as approximately 860 million non- Dalits—the perpetrators, bystanders, and witnesses. Despite domestic policy measures and increased attention to the issue, the practice of untouchability remains ingrained and touches nearly every aspect of Dalit life. Untouchability practices range from actions that impact the minutiae of daily life, to life-altering inequity and denials of opportunity, to violence committed with impunity. -

Attributing the lack of dynamism in the agrarian sector to market imperfections, the Government of Kerala has intervened both directly through departmentally run institutions and indirectly through public sector corporations. The failure of both these institutional devices encouraged the government to adopt marketing co-operatives as the preferred instruments of market intervention. Co-operatives with their decentralised, democratic structures are^ in theory, capable of combining autonomous decision-making capacity with accountability to farmer members. -

It is the philosophy of the self. And the self is unchangeable. It cannot be called old self and new self because it is changeless and ultimate. So the theory is also changeless. Neo- Vedanta is just like the traditional Vedanta interpreted with the perspective of modern man and applied in practical-life. By the Neo-Vedanta of Swami Vivekananda is meant the New-Vedanta as distinguished from the old traditional Vedanta developed by Sankaracharya (c.788 820AD). Neo-Vedantism is a re- establishment and reinterpretation Of the Advaita Vedanta of Sankara with modern arguments, in modern language, suited to modern man, adjusting it with all the modern challenges. In the later nineteenth century and early twentieth century many masters used Vedanta philosophy for human welfare. Some of them were Rajarammohan Roy, Swami DayanandaSaraswati, Sri CattampiSwamikal, Sri Narayana Guru, Rabindranath Tagore, Mahatma Gandhi, Sri Aurobindo, and Ramana Maharsi. ABSTRACT In the history of Travancore Kingdom, there had been a series of changes in judicial system that led to the development of current system of judiciary. During the reign of Marthanda Varma, criminal disputes were disposed in front of the King or Dewan in Padmanabhapuram Palace while petty cases were disposed by local landlords. Karthika Thirunal Rama Varma had empowered the Manikarens, Adhikaries and Proverthikars to settle the disputes in administrative divisions. In the reign of Gowri Lakshmi Bai (1791– 1814), District Courts at Padmanabhapuram, Mavelikara, Trivandrum, Vaikam and Alwaye were established in 1811 and these courts had two judges from Nair or Christian community and a Brahmin Sastri and the ancient Hindu Law was followed in the courts. In addition, a Huzhur court was also established to hear the disputes of Government servants. In 1831 C.E., Swathi Thirunal Rama Varma established Munsiff’s courts for disposal of petty civil cases and police cases, for which a munsiff from the British India was appointed in each court. One year after that, Zilla courts were established in each district and a code of regulations was framed in the British style for hearing the cases in 1834. -

Why are relatively poor people not more supportive of redistribution? Evidence from a randomized survey experiment across 10 countries By Christopher Hoy and Franziska Mager∗ We test a key assumption of conventional theories about prefer- ences for redistribution, which is that relatively poor people should be the most in favor of redistribution. We conduct a randomized survey experiment with over 30,000 participants across 10 coun- tries, half of whom are informed of their position in the national income distribution. Contrary to prevailing wisdom, people who are told they are relatively poorer than they thought are less con- cerned about inequality and are not more supportive of redistri- bution. This finding is driven by people using their own living standard as a \benchmark" for what they consider acceptable for others. The Gupta Empire: An Indian Golden Age The Gupta Empire, which ruled the Indian subcontinent from 320 to 550 AD, ushered in a golden age of Indian civilization. It will forever be remembered as the period during which literature, science, and the arts flourished in India as never before. Beginnings of the Guptas Since the fall of the Mauryan Empire in the second century BC, India had remained divided. For 500 years, India was a patchwork of independent kingdoms. During the late third century, the powerful Gupta family gained control of the local kingship of Magadha (modern-day eastern India and Bengal). The Gupta Empire is generally held to have begun in 320 AD, when Chandragupta I (not to be confused with Chandragupta Maurya, who founded the Mauryan Empire), the third king of the dynasty, ascended the throne. He soon began conquering neighboring regions. His son, Samudragupta (often called Samudragupta the Great) founded a new capital city, Pataliputra, and began a conquest of the entire subcontinent. Samudragupta conquered most of India, though in the more distant regions he reinstalled local kings in exchange for their loyalty. Samudragupta was also a great patron of the arts. He was a poet and a musician, and he brought great writers, philosophers, and artists to his court. Unlike the Mauryan kings after Ashoka, who were Buddhists, Samudragupta was a devoted worshipper of the Hindu gods. Nonetheless, he did not reject Buddhism, but invited Buddhists to be part of his court and allowed the religion to spread in his realm. Chandragupta II and the Flourishing of Culture Samudragupta was briefly succeeded by his eldest son Ramagupta, whose reign was short. -
