Globally Widespread Bryophytes, but Rare in Europe

[email protected] Hallingbäck, T. (2002). Globally widespread bryophytes, but rare in Europe. Portugaliae Acta Biol. 20: 11-24. The need to save not only globally threatened species, but also regionally rare and declining species in Europe is discussed. One rationale of red-listing species regionally is to be preventive and to counteract the local species extinction process. There is also a value in conserving populations at the edge of their geographical range and this is discussed in terms of genetic variation. Another reason is the political willingness of acting locally rather than globally. Among the rare and non-endemic species in Europe, some are rare and threatened both in Europe and elsewhere, others are more common outside Europe and a third group is locally common within Europe but rare in the major part. How much conservation effort should be put on these three European non-endemic species groups is briefly discussed, as well as why bryophytes are threatened. A discussion is given, for example, of how a smaller total distribution range, decreasing density of localities, smaller sites, less substrate and lower habitat quality affect the survival of sensitive species. This is also compared with species that have either high or low dispersal capacity or different longevity of either vegetative parts or spores. Examples from Sweden are given. Status of Cymopterus Williamsii (Williams' Springparsley)
Status of Cymopterus williamsii (Williams’ springparsley), north-central Wyoming Prepared for Bureau of Land Management Worland Field Office and Wyoming State Office by Joy Handley Wyoming Natural Diversity Database Dept. 3381,University of Wyoming Laramie, WY 82071 January 2016 BLM Cooperative Agreement No. L12AC20036 Supplement 4 ABSTRACT Cymopterus williamsii (Williams’ springparsley), a Wyoming endemic, was surveyed for detailed information about known occurrences and to locate possible new occurrences. A potential distribution model and aerial photointerpretation of habitat were used to identify areas for new surveys. Specific location, population distribution, and habitat data were collected for two occurrences that were only known from specimen collections, while more extensive mapping and data were gathered for two other known populations. Three new occurrences were found, providing some verification for the potential distribution model. Species information, status assessment, and management recommendations are provided based on prior knowledge, current and future land uses, and new understanding gained from these surveys. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Collections and taxonomic work by Ronald Hartman of the Rocky Mountain Herbarium (RM) remains central to understanding current taxonomy and status. 310 Arctic Biodiversity Assessment Purple saxifrage Saxifraga oppositifolia is a very common plant in poorly vegetated areas all over the high Arctic. It even grows on Kaffeklubben Island in N Greenland, at 83°40’ N, the most northerly plant locality in the world. REVEAL School of Integrative Plant Science Plant Biology, 412 Mann Building Cornell University Ithaca, New York 14853-4301 [email protected] ABSTRACT The role played by the American botanist John Torrey (1796–1873) in the development of floristics and the naming of plants, especially from the American West, is shown to be fundamental not only for present-day taxonomists in their monographic and floristics studies, and to historians in understanding the significance of discovering new and curious objects of nature in the exploration of the West but also the role Torrey directly and indirectly played in the development of such institutions as the New York Botanical Garden and the Smithsonian Institution. For the author of this 2014 paper, the name of John Torrey dates back to his earliest years of interests in botany, some 56 years ago, as even then Torrey was the kind of hero he could admire without resorting to comic books or movies. John Torrey has long been a “founding father” of North American systematic botany. Even so it was probably a bit unusual that a high school kid from the Sierra Nevada of California should know the name and even something about the man. It was Torrey who described plants with the explorer John Charles Frémont 1, and so by fate the three of us were thrown together while I penned a paper for a history class at Sonora Union High School in the spring of 1958. -
