We are deeply grateful that Gerry and Marguerite Lenfest, Annette and Jack Friedland, Martha Morris and John Medveckis all welcomed us for an inspiring visit and opened the door to many of Philadelphia’s cultural treasures. We will not soon forget the memorable evening at the Friedland home before our meeting or the magical combination of the Barnes Collection and the Curtis Institute musicians that the Lenfests provided at the end. We are very grateful to Chairman Lenfest and his wife, Marguerite, for their enthusiasm and leadership on our top fundraising priority: the remodeling of a building on Capitol Hill into a much-needed Library of Congress Residential Scholars Center. Increasingly, students, teachers and scholars are unable to come to the Library because they cannot find affordable housing in the nation’s capital, one of the most expensive housing markets in the world. This new facility will provide inexpensive hospitality close to the Library for more than 2,000 library users annually from all over the nation and the world. A Library Junior Fellow recently commented that the creation of this center will demonstrate that the Library “is interested in bringing the best and brightest to work with its treasures, no matter what their financial situation.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 2 MADISON COUNCIL BULLETIN — FALL 2009 1 LETTER, FROM PAGE 1 Since our last Council meeting, the Library received a generous $3 million grant for the Center from Jane and Calvin Cafritz’s Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation and a gift from Council members Jon and Lillian Lovelace. These gifts, coupled with the lead gift from Chairman Lenfest and gifts from Council members Marjorie M. Fisher, Jean and Jay Kislak, Glenn Jones, David and Susie Sainsbury, and Caroline Rose Hunt bring us two-thirds of the way toward our goal. With your help we can cross the finish line while we can still take advantage of the depressed construction market. Deepest thanks to the entire Council for its critical support of the 2009 Junior Fellows Program which brought 46 enthusiastic and talented students from around the country to work with our remarkable curators. These students gain insights into the environment and culture of the world’s largest repository of human knowledge and uncover treasures in the Library’s special collections that are then made available to researchers from around the world. We are pleased to welcome a number of new Council members: Diane and Mike Jones, suggested by Ed and Joyce Miller; Georgia Shreve, suggested by Mitzi Perdue; Linda and Bill Custard, suggested by our wonderful Dallas contingent; and Penny Watkins, suggested by Chairman Lenfest. I encourage each of you to nominate individuals who would further strengthen the Council and help continue its impressive record of stewardship. In 2010, the Madison Council will celebrate 20 years of steadfast support for the nation’s library. We look forward to celebrating this wonderful milestone with you and thank you for all you have done and are doing for the Library of Congress. James H. Within one hour of the time the World Digital Library made its debut on April 21, the site had received 700,000 page views. By the end of the first day, the site had registered more than 7.1 million page views and a total of 615,000 visitors from every country in the world. The launch fulfills Dr. Billington’s dream of utilizing digital technology to bridge borders by enabling people to find common ground in their unique creative and intellectual endeavors. Dr. Billington took his idea for the World Digital Library to UNESCO in 2005, remarking that such a project could “have the salutary effect of bringing people together by celebrating the depth and uniqueness of different cultures in a single global undertaking.” The site functions in the six official languages of UNESCO—Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish—plus Portuguese, and includes content in more than 40 languages. Descriptions of each item, along with videos with expert curators speaking about selected items, provide context for users and are intended to spark curiosity and encourage both students and the general public to learn more about the cultural heritage of all countries. Institutions contributing content to the WDL include national libraries and cultural and educational institutions in Brazil, Egypt, China, France, Iraq, Israel, Japan, Mali, Mexico, Morocco, the Netherlands, Qatar, the Russian Federation, Serbia, Slovakia, South Africa, Sweden, and the United States. Institutions in many other countries are committed to joining the project, and will be contributing content as the WDL is developed. “We are honored to be working with so many great libraries in this venture,” said Dr. Billington, “and thankful for the strong support that UNESCO has given to this project. What we launched today is a first step. We look forward to seeing this project realize its ambition to bring people together, deepen our understanding of each other, and help electronically oriented young people enjoy what is best in traditional culture, using the new media.” In a statement issued to the press, UNESCO Director-General Koïchiro Matsuura declared, “UNESCO welcomes the creation of the World Digital Library which reflects the values and priorities of our organization. WDL offers an invaluable platform for the free flow of information, for international solidarity, for the celebration of cultural diversity and for the building of inclusive knowledge societies. PRINTERS AND PUBLISHERS 1928 FOREWORD ESEARCH in Duucan genealogy was begun in 1894 and has been R carried on industriously to this date through Court records, VVills, Deeds, Bible records and tombstone inscriptions which have furnished proof and have affixed the seal of authenticity to much of the recorded data. Interested kinspeople have contributed from their store of family traditions some of which have been found to agree with certain facts and may be considered true. Many letters have been received, principally from descendants of Daniel and Stephen Duncan, extracts of which appear in this history and are mute evidence of the interest the writers feel in their lineage and their desire to worthily live and teach their chil­ dren to hold to the standard set by their ancestors. That there are errors in this publication there can be no doubt, but not of my making for: "I cannot tell how the truth may be; I say the tale as 'twas said to me." (Sir Walter Scott.) The frequent appearance of my name and the very personal nature of this book is warranted, somewhat, by the fact that all along the thought has been it would be distributed, mainly, among the descendants of Daniel and Stephen Duncan, between whose families there is very close relationship because of the intermar­ riage of many cousins. The stretch of years between 1894 and 1928 is a long one and it is not possible for me to estimate the time I have given to my self-imposed task, but if this book shall meet with favor and be prized by those into whose hands it may fall, the hours, days and weeks devoted to The Story of Thom,,as Dun­ can and His Si.r Sons will be remembered by me as pastime.

    Library of Congress, National Library of China Sign World Digital Library Agreement The Library of Congress and the National Library of China have concluded an agreement to cooperate in developing the World Digital Library. Signing the cooperative agreement in a brief ceremony on Sunday in the Asian Reading Room at the Library of Congress were Zhan Furui, General Director, National Library of China, and Librarian of Congress James Billington. The signing took place in the presence of the Minister of Culture for the People's Republic of China, Cai Wu, on the occasion of the meeting of the U.S. President's Committee for the Arts and Humanities. The two libraries agreed to provide content to the World Digital Library and to cooperate in such areas as the development and maintenance of the Chinese-language interface, the convening of international working groups to plan and develop the project, and the formation of an advisory committee of leading scholars and curators to recommend important collections about the culture and history of China for inclusion in the World Digital Library. The Web-based World Digital Library, slated to launch in April 2009, is an initiative of the Library of Congress and other cultural institutions around the world in cooperation with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Other institutions participating in the project include major libraries from Brazil, Egypt, Iraq, Israel, Russia, Serbia, and Sweden, the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration, the John Carter Brown Library, and the libraries of Brown and Yale Universities. The goal of the World Digital Library is to represent major world cultures in a way that contributes to better understanding among different cultures, as well as to serve the needs of scholars and researchers.

Franklin’s interests were diverse and wide-ranging. Countless volumes have been written about him. The challenge for the One Book program was to choose works that would adequately capture the true essence of the man and his times. Because of the complexity of this year’s subject, and in order to promote the widest participation possible, One Book, One Philadelphia has chosen to offer not one, but three books about Franklin. This year’s theme will be “Three Books for One Founding Father.” The featured books are: • The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin by Benjamin Franklin (various editions) • Ben and Me by Robert Lawson (1939, Little, Brown & Company) • Franklin: The Essential Founding Father by James Srodes (2002, Regnery Publishing, Inc.) The Authors BENJAMIN FRANKLIN, author of The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin, was born in 1706 and died in 1790 at the age of 84. He was an author, inventor, businessman, scholar, scientist, revolutionary, and statesman whose contributions to Philadelphia and the world are countless.

    World Digital Library: Governance and Decision Making The World Digital Library (WDL) is a project of the Library of Congress, established in cooperation with the United Nations Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (UNESCO) in 2007. The project has engaged national libraries, archives, museums, universities, research institutes, and other organizations from over 100 countries. Mission The project’s purpose was described on the World Digital Library website, “About the World Digital Library”, as follows: The WDL makes available on the Internet, free of charge and in multilingual format, significant primary materials from all countries and cultures. The principal objectives of the WDL are to: Promote international and intercultural understanding; Expand the volume and variety of cultural content on the Internet; Provide resources for educators, scholars, and general audiences; Build capacity in partner institutions to narrow the digital divide within and between countries. The WDL was originally proposed in 2005 by then Librarian of Congress James H. Billington in his opening plenary address to the U.S. National Commission for UNESCO Annual Conference, at Georgetown University, Washington, DC. The purpose of creating a special world digital library as a unitary project with diverse participants would be to attempt to provide a minimal, dependable online encyclopedia of the world's most important and interesting two-dimensional cultural objects, just as UNESCO has created an inventory of the world's most important three-dimensional
