Goodman & Elanie Steyn Global Journalism Education in the 21st Century: Challenges and Innovations empowers journalism educators to strengthen the field of journalism by preparing students to “do journalism”—as citizens and/or journalists— in the most effective, professional manner possible. This volume is a one-stop scholarly yet practical/approachable reference book for educators, trainers, journalists, media activists, policymakers, foundations, non-government organizations, students, and others with a vested interest in quality journalism. It sheds light on the emerging field of comparative journalism education worldwide by building on past research and offering conceptual, theoretical, empirical, and prac- tical insights into where the field has been, where it currently stands, and where it seems to be heading. Global Journalism Education’s findings are based on the combined expertise of many of the world’s top journalism education scholars through o Descriptive case studies highlighting journalism edu- cation and practice-related challenges and innovations in a wide range of countries from six continents; o Conceptual chapters examining the past, present, and predicted future of global journalism education and its influence on the profession; o Empirical case studies detailing classroom innova- tions worldwide; o A concluding chapter with 10 global journalism edu- cation predictions; and o An epilogue highlighting final observations regard- ing the current state of Western journalism education bias, ethnocentrism, and related provincial thinking and efforts to de-Westernize global journalism edu- cation and broaden journalists’ understanding of the world they live in. Robyn S. Goodman is Professor of Communication Studies at Alfred University. She teaches a wide array of reporting, global media, media literacy, and gender, minorities, and the media courses. Her research interests include global journalism education, U.S. news coverage of China, and the construction of knowledge. She publishes in a wide variety of academic journals. Elanie Steyn is Associate Professor and the head of journalism at the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication, University of Oklahoma. She teaches in media management, women in media leader- ship and business of media. Her research involves these same topics, and she has recently published on public diplomacy and on engaged research as part of her involvement with the U.S. Department of State’s Diplo- macy Lab initiative and professional fellows exchange programs.     Journalism and Mass Communication, August 2015, Vol. 5, No. 8, 373-387 D doi: 10.17265/2160-6579/2015.08.001 DAVID PUBLISHING “Painting with Words”: “Social Justice” Protest‟s Narrative in the Israeli‟s News Alonit Berenson Zefat Academic College, Safed, Israel This article analyzes the role of the media during the 2011 social protests in Israel, in order to examine why the “Social Justice” protest proved more effective than any other social protest organized previously in Israel. Scholars have shown that media framing has a powerful effect on citizen perception and policy debates. The social protests focused on the political-social-economic policy based on a neo-liberal ideology. They signified the beginnings of resistance to the system and became the focus of public and media identification via reports published by leading Israeli newspapers: Yedioth Ahronoth and Israel Hayom. Using content analysis, the author explore how the media plays an important role to shape the public perception of how to think and act about the protest. Due to the results, we evident the expand media capacity and influence, and that these effects are mediated in presenting positive and supportive coverage, including connotations and metaphors expressed by means of familiar slogans and events in the collective memory of Israeli society. Additionally, the expression “social justice” that became the protest‟s slogan, offered a broad common basis with which each citizen could identify, including journalists. The exact Hebrew name for this affair is the “Yemenite children Affair.” I use the word babies instead of children since at least two thirds of the kidnapped were in fact infants. 2. 1,053 complaints were submitted to all three commissions combined (1033 complaints of disappearances from camps and hospitals in Israel, and 20 from camp Hashed in Yemen). Rabbi Meshulam’s organization claimed to have information about 1,700 babies kidnapped prior to 1952 (450 of them from other Mizrahi ethnic groups) and about 4,500 babies kidnapped prior to 1956. These figures were neither discredited nor vali- dated by the last commission (Shoshi Zaid, The Child is Gone [Jerusalem: Geffen Books, 2001], 19–22). 3. During the immigrants’ stay in transit and absorption camps, the babies were taken to stone structures called baby houses. Mothers were allowed entry only a few times each day to nurse their babies. 4. See, for instance, the testimony of Naomi Gavra in Tzipi Talmor’s film Down a One Way Road (1997) and the testimony of Shoshana Farhi on the show Uvda (1996). 5. The transit camp Hashed in Yemen housed most of the immigrants before the flight to Israel. 6. This story is based on my interview with the Ovadiya family for a story I wrote for the newspaper Shishi in 1994 and a subsequent interview for the show Uvda in 1996.     Music in Conflict: Palestine, Israel, and the Politics of Aesthetic Production Nili Belkind Submitted in partial fulfillment of the Requirements for the degree Of Doctor of Philosophy In the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2014 © 2014 Nili Belkind All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT Music in Conflict: Palestine, Israel and the Politics of Aesthetic Production Nili Belkind This is an ethnographic study of the fraught and complex cultural politics of music making in Palestine-Israel in the context of the post-Oslo era. I examine the politics of sound and the ways in which music making and attached discourses reflect and constitute identities, and also, contextualize political action. Ethical and aesthetic positions that shape contemporary artistic production in Israel-Palestine are informed by profound imbalances of power between the State (Israel), the stateless (Palestinians of the occupied Palestinian territories), the complex positioning of Israel’s Palestinian minority, and contingent exposure to ongoing political violence. Cultural production in this period is also profoundly informed by highly polarized sentiments and retreat from the expressive modes of relationality that accompanied the 1990s peace process, strategic shifts in the Palestinian struggle for liberation, which is increasingly taking place on the world stage through diplomatic and cultural work, and the conceptual life and currency Palestine has gained as an entity deserving of statehood around the world. The ethnography attends to how the conflict is lived and expressed, musically and discursively, in both Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories (oPt) of the West Bank, encompassing different sites, institutions and individuals. I examine the ways in which music making and attached discourses reflect and constitute identities, with the understanding that musical culture is a sphere in which power and hegemony are asserted, negotiated and resisted through shifting relations between and within different groups.

    Community media, their communities and conflict: A mapping analysis of Israeli community broadcasting groups Hillel Nossek* Kinneret Academic College, Israel Nico Carpentier* Charles University, Czech Republic Abstract Community media organisations are famously difficult to define, as this media field is highly elusive and diverse, even if there is a certain degree of consensus about a series of basic characteristics. One key defining component is the objective to serve its community by allowing its members to participate in self-representational processes. Yet this component raises questions about what ‘community’ means, and how the community that is being served relates to other parts of society. This article studies a particular social reality – Israel – where community television is the dominant model, community television production groups are separated from the actual distribution of the produced content and different configurations of ‘us’ and ‘them’ characterise political reality. Following the methodological procedures outlined in Voniati et al. (2018), a mapping of 83 Israeli community broadcasting groups was organised, allowing us to flesh out the different ways in which these community broadcasting groups deal with their community/ies and the ‘other’. The analysis shows that many of these Israeli community broadcasting groups have fairly closed, singular-community articulations of ‘their’ communities. They rarely engage in interactions with other communities (limiting internal diversity) and their external diversity is even more restricted, with only one Arab–Israeli community broadcasting group able to be identified. The analysis did, however, identify a dozen groups with more open approaches towards their outer worlds, and thus the potential to assume a more conflict-transformatory role.

Often overlooked is the distinction between Israel extending its sovereignty to all proposed areas of the West Bank, versus just to the Jordan Valley. The former encompasses 29 percent of heavily populated areas in the West Bank, while the sparsely populated Jordan Valley comprises just 15 percent of the West Bank’s landmass.* And the Jordan Valley is a critical slice of strategic territory that holds the key to Israel’s security.

The project focuses on providing free of charge extracurricular activities to youth of a low-income area, as well as reviving the art and tradition of West African stilt walking. Through artistic interventions during special events, carnival competitions, workshops and outreach programs, the project aims to reinforce social ideals such as healthy life choices and respect for cultural heritage. Jumbie Camp follows the same concepts as above with the Brooklyn Jumbies and takes place in two burrows of New York with very different demographics. Jumbie Camp set up in Galeria Ramis Barquet in Chelsea, where the gallery was transformed into a workshop and rehearsal space where costumes and masks were created to provide costumes free of charge for the Brooklyn Jumbies’ presentations.

Questionnaires containing both closed and open-ended questions were completed by 82 participants, approximately half from each community. While their discourses included similar framings of danger and threat, the two groups manifested different patterns of Internet use (and nonuse). Rigorous adherence to religious dictates is greatly admired in these communities, and the women take pride in manipulating their status in them. Their agency is reflected in how they negotiate the tension inherent in their roles as both gatekeepers and agents-of-change, which are analyzed as valuable currencies in their cultural and religious markets. Schejtert ABSTRACT The regulation of transfrontier broadcasting in Israel has served a system of information and cultural control motivated by a nationalistic-protectionist ideology ever since the 1960s. Although the policies regulating Israeli broadcasting have at times shown greater openness to Western values and international influences, this article demonstrates through an analysis of legal documents how regulators have reverted in recent years to a more restrictive policy regarding the free flow of transborder communications.
