It took a while to break into the densely woven magic of his writing, but story by story it began to reveal in scintillating detail his Jewish boyhood in turn-of-the-century Poland . -

Raul Hilberg and the Destruction of European Jews
BTNG-RBHC, XXI, 1990, 1-2, pp.110-124 THE INCOMPLETENESS OF A MASTERPIECE Raul Hilberg and The Destruction of European Jews BY GIE VAN DEN BERGHE Doctor in Ethics Raul Hilberg, an Austrian Jew (Vienna °1926), emigrated with his family to the United States in 1939. In 1944 he returned, in an American army uniform. After the liberation he took part in one of the Neurenberg trials, as a witness of the U.S. Department of Justice. Twenty-six close relatives (uncles, aunts, nieces) of Hilberg died as a consequence of nazi persecutions1. This personal background deter- mined the investigations to which Hilberg applied himself from 1948 onwards. In 1955 he defended his doctoral thesis2. One year later he began teaching political science at the University of Vermont, and he is still doing this today. Already in 1961 his epoch-making study The destruction of European Jews was published3. What Hilberg modestly describes as 'the first words on a difficult subject' (p. vii), was in fact the first scientific attempt to find out how a highly civilized, 20th century nation succeeded in setting aside all juridical, administrative, psycho- logical and moral obstacles, in order to almost completely destroy a population. Forty years after the liberation the revised, extensively completed 1. Interview with R. HILBERG in, L. FERRY et S. PASQUTJBR 'Les fonctionnaires du génocide', in: L'Express International, 27.5.1988, pp. 50-58. 2. Prologue to Annihilation. Lviv HISTORIA
Lviv HISTORIA Panorama of Lviv, 1616. Source: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lwow_1.jpg Lviv was founded by the king of Rus – Daniel Halicki around 1250 and named after his son Lion. In the years 1349–1370 was a part of the Kingdom of Poland, 1370– 1387, part of the Kingdom of Hungary, from 1387 to 1772 again part of the Kingdom of Poland, from 1772-1918 part of Austrian Monarchy, from 1918 to 1939 part of Second Republic of Poland. Pre-war Lviv was one of the most beautiful cities in Poland and the third largest in terms of population. In the interwar period it was the capital of the Lviv province, and its population was estimated at about 350,000. Panorama of Lviv Source: http://grafik.rp.pl/g4a/913622,477579,9.jpg The first mention of Jewish settlement in Lviv comes from the end of XIV century. The Jewish Community in Lviv was one of the oldest and most important in Polish-Jewish history. In the last census before World War II more than 24 000 out of about 100 000 Jews in Lviv declared Polish as their native language. It was the largest assimilated group in the country. Lviv Market, 1938 Source: Biblioteka Narodowa The outbreak of war on September 1, 1939, marked the beginning of an irreversible demographic change. The Soviet and German occupation and the post-war change of Poland's borders caused that Lviv lost an estimated 80% of its inhabitants. Scheindl-Charlotte Kohn recalls Lviv from her childhood before the outbreak of World War II: "I remember that, first of all, the Ruska street was a busystreet then, much more than now. -
The Judgment of “Privileged” Jews in the Work of Raul Hilberg R
CHAPTER 2 THE JUDGMENT OF “PRIVILEGED” JEWS IN THE WORK OF RAUL HILBERG R To a Jew this role of the Jewish leaders in the destruction of their own peo- ple is undoubtedly the darkest chapter of the whole dark story. It had been known about before, but it has now been exposed for the fi rst time in all its pathetic and sordid detail by Raul Hilberg. —Hannah Arendt, Eichmann in Jerusalem: A Report on the Banality of Evil The limit of judgment in relation to “privileged” Jews is crucially im- portant to a consideration of Hilberg’s work, the widespread impact of which cannot be underestimated. His seminal study, The Destruction of the European Jews, has been praised by many as “the single most important work on the Holocaust,” and Hilberg himself has been char- acterized as “the single most important historian” in the fi eld.1 Fur- thermore, the above epigraph makes clear that Arendt’s controversial arguments regarding Jewish leaders (see the introduction) drew heav- ily on Hilberg’s pioneering work. This chapter investigates the part of Hilberg’s work that deals with “privileged” Jews, in order to provide a thematic analysis of the means by which Hilberg passes his overwhelm- ingly negative judgments on this group of Holocaust victims. Hilberg’s judgments are conveyed in diverse ways due to the eclec - tic nature of his publications, in which the subject of the Judenräte— which has received considerable attention in Holocaust historiography— This open access library edition is supported by Knowledge Unlatched. Katherine Wehby Grand Valley State University Frederick Meijer Honors College April 26, 2012 Wehby2 The leaders of the Third Reich used vast amounts of visual and written propaganda as a means for solidifying their political power, to create and glorify a national Aryan identity, and to perpetuate anti-Semitism which would lead to justification of violence against the Jews. The majority of Nazi propaganda is androcentric; focusing on glorifying Aryan men and demonizing Jewish men. Nazi propaganda lionized the work ethic and strong character of Aryan men and reified Jewish men as sly Shylocks aimed at seducing Aryan women and as the source of the economic downturn that plagued Weimar Germany as a result of the World War I and the Treaty of Versailles. The portrayal of women in propaganda works in a similar hierarchy, with Aryan women placed above Jewish women. -
David Roth Thesis
The American Reaction to the 1968 Warsaw Pact Invasion of Czechoslovakia A Senior Honors Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for Graduation with research distinction in History in the Undergraduate Colleges of The Ohio State University by David C. Roth The Ohio State University June 2010 Project Advisor: Professor Theodora Dragostinova, Department of History Roth 2 INTRODUCTION August 20, 1968 was a fateful date in the history of Czechoslovakia. That night, armies from the Soviet Union, Poland, Hungary, East Germany, and Bulgaria launched a surprise invasion to suppress the country’s process of liberalization known as “socialism with a human face.” August 20 also was a date of importance to President Lyndon B. Johnson of the United States. The President was making final preparations for a nuclear arms limitation summit meeting with the Soviet leaders that he was going to announce the following day. Throughout his presidency, Johnson had been working to achieve what he hoped would amount to an eventual peace between the Eastern and Western worlds. He made promoting détente a priority, and endeavored to uphold and expand upon an American policy that supported and encouraged freedom and democracy in the East. Now at the end of his term, Johnson was growing more optimistic about achieving a major breakthrough with the Soviet Union. He believed that the conflict in Vietnam was going to tarnish his legacy, and he desperately wanted to end his presidency with a major international success. As it turned out though, the attack on Czechoslovakia forced the postponement and ultimate cancelation of Johnson’s hopes and plans. -

Married: Bromislawa Schrenzel January 4, 1924. 105 MEDICAL PRACTIONERS TARGETED BY ZBV I can fully agree with the now classic testimony of Polish Prime Minister, Joseph Cyrankiewicz, a former prisoner of Oswiecim (Auschwitz) extermination camp, and a witness during the trial of the camp commander Rudolf Hess. He testified, when called by the prosecutor to tell the truth, and declared categorically that alas, in spite of his best efforts and intentions, he cannot relate the truth accurately, since no human being can describe truthfully the enormities of the crimes, that quantitatively and qualitatively exceed human imagination. Nevertheless, I cannot remain silent or resign myself to inaction. The spilled blood of millions of our innocent brothers calls loudly and incessantly for justice. The shadows and souls of our Martyrs visit us in our dreams and keep us company in every step of reality, calling for hunting and punishing the perpetrators. They show the bleeding wounds and lacerated hands, bodies infected and torn by Gestapo dogs… their faces deformed by suffering deaths in gas chambers with bloody foam on their lips. -
