DECONSTRUCTING REVOLVER Wednesday, May 2 at 7:30 pm | Members 11 | Public $16

Many music polls list Revolver as the top of all time. This 1966 masterpiece saw the band expanding its musical horizons, something that had begun with the prior album, Rubber Soul. On Revolver, the Beatles were fully transitioning from playful Mop Tops to psychedelic musical adventurers -- using the studio as another “instrument.” The album launched a rich period of experimentation that coincided with their decision to stop performing live. With memorable songs like “Eleanor Rigby,” “Yellow Submarine,” and “Tomorrow Never Knows,” they pushed popular music to a place it had never been. (USA, 2017, 95 min., NR, English | Dir. David Zellerford) Deconstructing The Beatles’ Revolver is a feature-length, multimedia presentation that explores the groundbreak- ing creative process behind this landmark piece of music history. In addition to many of the tracks from Revolver, this presentation analyzes two other songs recorded during those same sessions, “Paperback Writer” and “Rain.”

Fred Rogers in WON'T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR? Members Only Sneak Peak! Wednesday, June 20 Pre-reception 7 pm | Film 8 pm | Discussion with Fred Craden 9:30 pm $12 Members

With his gentle voice and heartfelt words of wisdom, Fred Rogers served as a compassionate surrogate father for generations of American children who tuned in to public television. He believed in love as the essential ingredient in life and was able to assist kids through difficult situations armed merely with handmade puppets suggesting tolerance and acceptance. An ordained Presbyterian minister, Mr. Rogers made speaking directly and openly to children his life’s work, both on and off his long-running show. He was at the forefront of a movement devoted to meeting the specific needs of children and was considered a radical back then for saying, “I like you just the way you are.” Animated sequences are peppered between archival footage of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood and interviews with Fred Rogers’ family, friends, and colleagues. Examining Rogers’s legacy, Academy Award- winning director Morgan Neville (20 Feet from Stardom) offers a deliberate and beautiful tribute to an authentic human being and provides a much-needed salve for these often-fraught times. (USA, 2018, 94 min., NR, English | Dir. Morgan Neville) An intimate look at America's favorite neighbor: Mr. Fred Rogers. An eye-opening portrait of a man whom we all think we know, this emotional and moving film takes us beyond the zip-up cardigans and land of make-believe, and into the heart of a creative genius who inspired generations of children with compassion and limitless imagination.

For decades there have been questions about exactly what these tests measure, what role they play in admission, and how predictive they are of academic success. The anxiety-provoking exams, and the billion-dollar test-prep industry that has grown around them, have also become lightning rods in the national debate over equity in educational opportunity. The Test & the Art of Thinking examines this controversy through interviews with students, parents, counselors, test-prep professionals and academics to provide a fascinating look at this uniquely American rite of passage and how it reflects deeper issues in our education system — and society as a whole. A FATEFUL CROSSROADS: WHERE WEST SIDE STORY MEETS FORDHAM Thursday, May 10 at 7:30 pm | Members $11 | Public $16

Professor Spiegelman starts with the making of West Side Story (by Bernstein, Sondheim and Robbins and Robert Wise) and its being shot in the ruins of San Juan Hill (Jets vs. Sharks); highlights who’s remembered and who’s forgotten in the area, then and now; remembers indie cinema giant Dan Talbot (the anti-Moses) and the recent closing of his/our revered Lincoln Plaza Cinemas; what today’s Dutch in Old Amsterdam just did with a controversial statue to a national hero (actual Moses-like villain) and how it would help us here in “New” Amsterdam to recover a missing Moses statue, that could restore the erased memory of that former minority – and white ethnic! – neighborhood; and how its iconic theme song, "There's a Place for Us/ Somewhere" becomes an inclusive challenge the dominant legacies of Moses and the Hyper-Gentrification of the Lincoln Square projects that have ruled the roost. As Steven Spielberg has announced his remake to come, bring your own “west side Stories” for our extended Q&A! Dr. Robert Spiegelman presents the enthralling story – with vivid slides and movie clips, of how four west side stories converge into a gripping tour-de-force: from the diverse, mostly-minority neighborhood before Lincoln Center; through the reign of Robert Moses; to the rise of Lincoln Center in the footprint of a razed community; and in the continuing aftermath of our personal stories.

A Florida Enchantment is considered one of Edith Storey’s best films, as well as one of the most wonderfully odd silent films ever made! This delightful comedy stars Storey as a strong-willed young woman named Lillian who is irritated with her much-older fiancee, Dr Cassandene Sidney( Drew). She finds some magic seeds that cause the person who eats them to switch gender, and she eats one. Enjoying her sudden freedom as a man, she kisses other women, dances with them, smokes cigarettes, applies for a man's job, and dresses in men's clothing. When she starts secretly feeding the magic seeds to those around her, including her unsuspecting fiancee, pandemonium ensues! Notable for its bold subversion of sexual stereotypes, the humor is marked by director and co-star Sidney Drew's clever sophistication and understated style. Proceeded by Jane’s Bashful Hero, a 1916 short starring Edith Storey. (USA, 1914, 63 min., NR, English intertitles | Dir. Sidney Drew) Edith Storey once said, “I want to be a bit different from the girl across the aisle.” Born in 1892, she began her movie career in 1908, and was soon starring in a wide range of movies including a number of westerns (one of her director’s commented that she could “ride anything with hair and four legs, throw a rope and shoot with the best of the cowpunchers”). She was also an ambulance driver during World War I. She retired from films at the age of 29 and settled into a house on Asharoken Beach. She became the Village Clerk of Asharoken in the spring of 1932, a position she held until 1960. In the 1930s when there was no village hall, elections were held at her house and during World War II, her front yard served as the drop spot for scrap metal. Children later recalled how she regaled them with stories of her movie career. Edith Storey passed away in Northport in 1967. She has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Ben Model is one of America’s leading silent film accompanists, and has been playing piano and organ for silent films at the New York MoMA since 1984, and the CAC since 2006. Join us for an evening dedicated to silent star (and longtime Northport resident) Edith Storey

SUNDAY SCHMOOZE Brunch, Film, and Discussion hosted by Fred Craden THE OTHER SIDE OF HOPE (Toivon tuolla puolen) Winner of the the Silver Bear for Best Director at the Berlin International Film Festival Sunday, May 27, Bagels at 10 am | Film at 11 am Members $11 | Public $16

This wry, melancholic comedy from Aki Kaurismäki, a clear-eyed response to the current refugee crisis, follows two people searching for a place to call home. Displaced Syrian Khaled (Sherwan Haji) lands in Helsinki as a stowaway; meanwhile, middle- aged salesman Wikström (Sakari Kuosmanen) leaves behind his wife and job and buys a conspicuously unprofitable seafood restaurant. After Khaled is denied asylum, he decides not to return to Aleppo—and the paths of the two men cross fortuitously. As deadpan as the best of the director’s work, and with a deep well of empathy for its down-but-not-out characters (many played by members of Kaurismäki's ever-reliable stock company), The Other Side of Hope is a bittersweet tale of human kindness in the face of official indifference. Kaurismaki has mentioned that this will be last film as a director. (Finland, 2017, 100 min., NR, Finnish/ English/Arabic with English subtitles| Dir. Aki Kaurismaki) With his trademark dry humor and human touch, famed Finnish filmmaker Aki Kaurismäki weaves this moving comedy about a poker-playing restaurateur and former traveling salesman who befriends a group of refugees into a thoughtful exploration of the current refugee crisis.

The Royal Ballet BERNSTEIN CENTENARY Saturday, May 5 at 12 noon | Members $11 | Public $16

Leonard Bernstein was one of the first classical composers in America to achieve both popular and critical acclaim. He was eclectic in his sources – drawing on jazz and modernism, the traditions of Jewish music and the Broadway musical – and many of Bernstein’s scores are remarkably well suited to dance. He was particularly associated with Jerome Robbins, their credits together including Fancy Free and West Side Story. To celebrate the centenary year of the composer’s birth, The Royal Ballet has united all three of its associate choreographers to celebrate the dynamic range and danceability of Bernstein’s music. The programme includes two world premieres by Resident Choreographer Wayne McGregor and Artistic Associate Christopher Wheeldon. McGregor sets his ballet to Bernstein's Chichester Psalms and Wheeldon to Serenade (after Plato’s Symposium). At the heart of the programme is the first revival of Artist in Residence Liam Scarlett’s The Age of Anxiety, created in 2014 to Bernstein’s soul-searching Second Symphony. Both symphony and ballet are inspired by W.H. Auden’s masterful modernist poem. 2 hours 45 minutes, including two intervals. The Royal Ballet celebrates the centenary of Leonard Bernstein’s birth with an all-Bernstein programme from the Company’s three associate choreographers, Wayne McGregor, Liam Scarlett and Christopher Wheeldon. Verdi's MACBETH Saturday, May 19 at 12 noon | Members $11 | Public $16

The warrior Macbeth fights on the side of the King of Scotland – but when a coven of witches prophesy that he shall become king himself, a ruthless ambition drives Macbeth and his wife to horrific acts. Murder makes Macbeth king, and intrigue and butchery are the hallmarks of his brief, doomed reign. The witches make another prediction, which also comes true: Macbeth and his lady lose their lives, and justice is restored. Verdi’s life-long love affair with Shakespeare’s works began with Macbeth, a play he considered to be ‘one of the greatest creations of man’. With his librettist Francesco Maria Piave Verdi set out to create ‘something out of the ordinary’. Their success is borne out in every bar of a score that sees Verdi at his most theatrical: it bristles with demonic energy. About 3 hours 20 minutes, including one interval. Sung in Italian with English surtitles. Antonio Pappano conducts Verdi’s opera based on Shakespeare’s tragedy, with a magnificent cast including Anna Netrebko and Anna Pirozzi, Željko Lučić and Ildebrando D’Arcangelo. 17 presents CARRIE & FRIDAY THE 13TH (35 mm Double feature) Friday, May 11 at 10 pm | Members $18 | Public $22
