Warwicshire County Athletic Association WARWICKSHIRE COUNTY AA and WORCESTERSHIRE AA present their Annual Cross Country Championships on Saturday 4th January 2020 at Warley Woods, Smethwick hosted by Worcestershire AA WARWICKSHIRE COUNTY AA and WORCESTERSHIRE AA Annual Cross Country Championships Saturday 4th January 2020 at Warley Woods hosted by Worcestershire AA FOREWORD and WELCOME by Bob Carey, President of Warwickshire County AA Welcome to 2020 and our first Championship of the year. On behalf of Warwickshire County Athletic Association I welcome all athletes, officials and marshals to the 2020 cross country championships. As in the past few years this will be a joint championship with Worcestershire who are hosting the event this year at Warley Woods in Smethwick. I would like at this point to say a very big thank you to the Warley Woods Community Trust for their cooperation in allowing these Championships to take place at such short notice. It is indeed very much appreciated. My first experience of the Warwickshire Cross Country Championships was as an 18 year old back in 1957 on a course near Rugby. At that time, men and women competed at completely different venues, and in the case of the men, the Championships consisted of just two races. Under 18 “youths” and Senior men only. The Midland and National Championships at that time went one race further and included an under 21 “junior “race but the Inter Counties Championship was purely a Senior men only event, usually over about 7 miles. I don’t of course have first-hand experience but I feel sure that the ladies Championships in those days were organised on similar lines. Today though we will be able to witness some great competition with age groups ranging from under 13’s to Masters for both male and female athletes. It will be a real festival of cross country running, with the athletes in all age groups striving to gain a place in their respective county teams so as to represent that county in the Inter County Championships. These will be held at Prestwold Hall near Loughborough on March 7th. Today’s championships will be the main event for athletes to stake their claim if they wish to gain their “County Vest”. May I wish all a very successful day, be it taking part in the races or in officiating. Bob Carey President, Warwickshire County A. A. TEAM SELECTION for INTER-COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS Today’s Championships are the principal criteria for selection to the Inter Counties Cross Country Championships (all age groups) to be held at Loughborough on Saturday 7th March 2020. If you are handed an invitation form at the finish, it is important that you fill it in and return it today. Athletes who are not automatically selected but who would like to be considered for selection should tell the team managers before the end of January. For Warwickshire: The first three eligible athletes to cross the line in each race will automatically be selected and then the remainder of the team will be chosen by the team managers. The County reserves the right to disregard any athlete, even if they qualify automatically, if they have been disrespectful to the County or its team managers in the past. For Worcestershire: The first five eligible athletes to cross the line in each race will automatically be selected and then the remainder of the team will be chosen by the team managers. RESULTS Results will be posted on the Warwickshire and Worcestershire web sites as soon as possible after the event. www.WarwickshireAthletics.co.uk www.worcaa.org.uk WARWICKSHIRE COUNTY AA and WORCESTERSHIRE AA Annual Cross Country Championships Saturday 4th January 2020 at Warley Woods hosted by Worcestershire AA TWO FUNNELS WILL OPERATE ON THE CHAMPIONSHIP DAY PROSPECTUS & RULES Age Groups These Championships generally use the same age group definitions as the Birmingham (Mens) Invitation Cross Country League, the Midlands (Ladies) Cross Country League and the West Midlands Young Athletes League. The Counties are as defined before the 1974 boundary changes. Check with a County Secretary if you are not sure. Warwickshire includes most of the Greater Birmingham area, Coventry, Solihull and the present Warwickshire areas. Worcestershire takes in Stourbridge, Dudley, Oldbury and South Birmingham.
