Objectives of 4-H: 1. Develop intellectual curiosity. 2. Gain knowledge and learn practical skills. 3. Acquire feelings of self worth. 4. Relate effectively to adults and other youths, respecting differences. 5. Achieve and maintain optimum physical and mental health. 6. Use time wisely for work, leisure, self, family, and community. 7. Increase skills in leadership and self expression. 8. Use science and technology. 9. Make vocational decisions. 10. Develop concern for community and public affairs. 4-H Project Selection Careful guidance in the selection of projects should be provided by club leaders and parents. Considerations made by the member in choosing a project should be: ... have a sincere interest in the project . ... find the project enjoyable and meaningful . ... receive a challenge- not too easy or too difficult . •.. receive satisfaction from project work and related learning experiences . ... have adequate time to devote to the project . ... have ~uidance and leadership in the project from leaders, community resource persons and parents . ... have some standard to measure how well he/she is doing and to have opportunity for evaluation . ... cost of projects should be manageable. Each 4-H project which is offered statewide is listed in this publication. Additional local projects may also be carried by 4-H members. Self-determined projects are listed in the table of contents at the end of each subject matter area. For more specific details on what the member may learn in the project refer to the description of each project, Section 1. 4-H learning Experiences The project books serve as learning guides with suggested activities. Related activities can be included to enhance the project to provtde additional learning experiences. As members participate and benefit from these experiences, they are able to think, plan, and do more effectively. Projects and experiences should serve as means in accomplishing goals. Page 2 Here are some related project activities which can be done individually or as a group and which should be included in the club's program for the year. Check the objectives on the previous page and relate to them. Related Project and Club Activities: Demonstrations Contests Judging Achievement programs Giving talks Group discussions Exhibits Record keeping Training sessions Program planning Service projects Club meetings Speakers Conferences Tours Camps Member Evaluation Evaluation is an important learning experience and should be a continuous process. At the beginning of the club year, members, with their leader's assistance, should discuss what they want to learn and how they expect to learn. Periodically throughout the year, check with the members on their progress and what they feel they have learned. Keeping a record book is one way that members can see their growth and accomplishments. Helping members to evaluate themselves can help them feel and know their own needs and values, and to have the desire to achieve and learn more. Help them to set new goals.
