3Rd and 4Th Grade Man to Man Explanation 3rd and 4th Grade Man- to-Man Defense Explanation NO ZONE DEFENSES or DOUBLE TEAMING IS ALLOWED. • Only man-to-man (or woman-to-woman) defense is permitted. o Players can switch on defense, He/she may then return to their original coverage player (“switch” back) or remain with the new player o Players can “help” only if an offensive player goes past his/her teammate’s (or defender’s) shoulder or once that player has driven into the free throw lane area with the basketball. Double teaming from this help situation may occur in the free throw lane area. o When the ball is loose or on a rebound situation, double teaming it is not immediately enforceable until possession has been clearly established and the ball is outside of the free throw lane area, then a brief period of time for the players to relocate a man/woman. o Players can “fall back” on the ball handler (don’t have to pick up immediately at half court). It does need to be recognizable that player X is guarding the ball handler and needs to “pick up” that player and guard closely with in the 3 point line. o There may be brief times a double team occurs if the Offense chooses to set a screen/pick on the ball handlers defender. o Players are allowed to play a “Help” defense, using man-you- ball principles and “Basket Line” defense principles as long as they are aware of players NO FULL COURT PRESS ALLOWED IN FIRST HALF. MAN TO MAN FULL COURT PRESS IS ALLOWED IN SECOND HALF AS LONG AS TEAM IS NOT WINNING BY 10 or MORE POINTS. o Double teaming and help rules apply the same as above. If a player drives past a defender and requires “help” then a player can switch. A brief double team may occur, but 1 of the players needs to switch or recover so it is one player vs one player. Reminder that players are only forced to guard their player closely til the 3 point line (meaning some players are allowed to “play” back.) REMINDER- These rules are not common rules IAABO Certified Officials are accustom or trained to both look for and nor enforce. They will be provided the same rules and explanation and will do the best to their ability to properly enforce this rule. We place ownership on you the coach to insist your learning players stay within the rules and you as a coach doesn’t encourage blurring the lines of these rules.     ​Kindergarten/First Grade Rules 1. To allow the game to be played, double dribbling and traveling will be left to the discretion of the head coaches. Both violations should be called minimally to not at all at the beginning of the season. By seasons end, more calls should be called for major violations for double dribbling and traveling, but again it will be up to the coaches in charge of the games. 2. In jump ball situations, the possession will alternate. 3. No child may foul out. If a child is perpetually fouling the other team, she or he should be removed from the game for an appropriate period of time to adjust their game play. 4. All fouls will result in the ball being passed back into play(no foul shots). 5. All defense must be played from inside the three point arc. Man on Man or Zone defense is acceptable, but no double teaming or trapping is allowed. 6. Defenders may not steal the basketball from a player dribbling or holding the basketball unless the offencive player possessing the ball has at least one foot in the lane(the paint). 7. Any pass made within the arc may be intercepted. 8. Blocked shots may only occur when the defensive player is between the shooter and the basket. The defender may not jump and must have both hands straight above the head in a proper defensive position. A shot may not be blocked from the side or behind as well. 9. Two 20 minute halves and a 5 minute half time.

Chin Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology University of California, Los Angeles, 2012 Professor Min Zhou, Chair My dissertation research examines how cultural organizations, particularly ethnic sports leagues, shape racial/ethnic and gender identity and community building among later-generation Japanese Americans. I focus my study on community-organized youth basketball leagues - a cultural outlet that spans several generations and continues to have a lasting influence within the Japanese American community. Using data from participant observation and in-depth interviews collected over two years, I investigate how Japanese American youth basketball leagues are active sites for the individual, collective, and institutional negations of racial, ethnic, and gendered categories within this group. Offering a critique of traditional assimilation theorists who argue the decline of racial and ethnic distinctiveness as a group assimilates, my findings demonstrate how race and ethnic meanings continue to shape the lives of later-generation Japanese American, particularly in sporting worlds. I also explain why assimilated Japanese ii Americans continue to seek co-ethnic social spaces and maintain strict racial boundaries that keep out non-Asian players. Because Asians are both raced and gendered simultaneously, I examine how sports participation differs along gendered lines and how members collaboratively “do gender” that both reinforce and challenge traditional hegemonic notions of masculinity and femininity.

Its immediate effect is placing duress on the ball handlers, potentially forcing dribbling on passing errors, well before they get across half court and into the scoring area. In the long term, the effects of persistent pressure, constant guessing, and an increase in tempo can cause additional physical and mental fatigue on your opponent and give you a great opportunity for success. Nearly eight years ago, Jim Larranga inherited a George Mason University men’s basketball program that suffered through seven losing seasons including four last place finishes in the Colonial Athletic Association. After implementing an intense style of pressure defense that includes the Full Court Scramble, George Mason now has the most wins in the CAA as well as four postseason tournament appearances in the past six years. Coaching Point: Have an identity. !-Hard to build habbits if you change your defense a lot. !-They more or less keep the pack line no matter who they are playing Their pack line d is not a soft one where you sit in the lane. !-Their PLD is an aggressive defense, with incredible ball pressure, and you must be smart off the ball. The PLD helps give you a “system” to play defense. The PLD: 1) Gives players answers and accountability !-Certain things players can/can’t do do !-They are given specific rules ex. “You can’t play behind the post” vs “Play hard” 2) Simplifies Scouting--> Their coaches watch a ton of film but do not give it all to the players. Instead they play certain actions in very specific ways and practice these every day. !Ex. Practice defending staggered screens so when they play a team they already !know how they will defend this and get better at it through out the year. 3) Creates a culture your players can believe in. !Varsity players “pass” down the defense by teaching your younger players !without a lot of involvement from coaches. ****Mark the pack line in practice every day**** Think of it as a 16 foot 3 point line.     #20 Series Defense: Pressure Man-to-Man The #20 defense was Coach Dean Smith’s predominate defensive attack. He used the term attack for his pressure man-to-man defense since the objective was to initiate the action on defense to disconcert the opponent and force them out of their intended offense. When successful your team will decrease their opponent’s points per possession and by so doing, will increase your own. For best results with the 20 defense you should look to accomplish these three objectives: 1. Pressure the opponent to put the ball on the floor and force him to the sideline with it. 2. Play the ball and the immediate outlets aggressively. Overplay each offensive man one perimeter pass from the ball by blocking every passing lane. 3. Constantly support this aggressiveness with help from the weak side. There are some rules to learn; however, the defensive principles remain the same. Most of these principles are taught through four simple drills. Eventually, we will get to these drills as a means of explaining the 20 defense as used by Coach Dean Smith. To begin with, let’s start our explanation of the duties of the player guarding the ball handler. Guarding the Player with the Ball There are three circumstances your defensive player may find himself guarding the man with the ball: 1. The offensive player may have the ball and not yet dribbled. 2. He may have already dribbled. 3. He may be dribbling. Dribble Alive Stance: In playing a man on the perimeter who’s dribble is still alive, keep the tail low, be on balance, and have a hand up and over the ball.
