BACKGROUND OF POST SELF-ASSESSMENT IMPROVEMENT PLAN (PSAIP) ______

Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) in university and its different Departments require ongoing and targeted measures to realize the planned improvement. These are strategies that provide great ways to overcome the weaknesses of the programs using strengths and opportunities identified through a comprehensive self-assessment and peer review process. The process of improvement begins with the developing a required improvement plan. This plan addresses all issues identified for programs improvement to enhance students learning.

The PSAIP concept is new in Bangladesh and it was never done in Jahangirnagar University (JU). A PSAIP for a department embody a need-based well-structured design that is comprehensive, highly structured, specific, and focused; recognizes the views of the stakeholders and recommendations found through EPR (External Peer Review) on all assessment areas of Self-assessment (SA); fixes specific achievable targets in specific timelines; identifies strategic interventions in respect to each target and estimate a budget and identify how this is to be achieved.

The general objective of a PSAIP for an academic department is to establish quality academic culture in the entity for the attainment of intended skills, knowledge and attitude so that they can meet the needs of the employers, society at large and even the needs of the global community leading to the socio- economic development of Bangladesh. The specific objectives of a PSAIP are:

i. To establish good governance ensuring for such a learning environment in the entity so that the graduates can attain the intended learning outcomes in terms of knowledge, skills and attitude and be fit to meet the society;

ii. To modernize and update the curricula according to the needs of the society;

iii. To ensure entry of good quality learners with commitment so that graduates can achieve desired standards;

iv. To improve physical facilities to create better learning condition for the achievement of learning outcomes;

v. To ensure effective teaching-learning for quality education (for attaining intended learning outcomes);

vi. To establish fair, effective procedures to assess achievement of course learning outcomes by the students;

vii. To improve student support services such a level so that students’ personal and academic needs can be met;

viii. To make an effective team of teaching and non-teaching staffs for quality education;

ix. To develop capacity, formulate policy and undertake program for innovative research;

x. To maintain and enhance internal quality assurance (IQA) practices.

PSAIP is a great way to overcome the weaknesses of the programs offered by the entity using strengths and opportunities identified through comprehensive self-assessment and peer review process. It address all issues identified for program improvement to enhance students’ learning, living and supports experiences at the university. Moreover, It consists of targets/goals, objectives and proposed policy interventions to achieve the targets and objectives. It is a policy document and provides inputs during preparation of annual budget of the university.

The Department of Geography and Environment (DGE), formerly the Department of Geography, is one of the four early academic departments at Jahangirnagar University under the faculty of Social Sciences. The Department started its activities with a handful number of faculties and undergraduate students immediately after the independence of Bangladesh. Since then, the Department grew gradually and established itself at the forefront of higher learning institutions in the country. The department is now fortunate to enjoy a superb research and exceptional teaching environment, with well-equipped classrooms, laboratory and IT facilities in a supportive and collegial atmosphere. At its core, it strength is drawn from all the people - staff and students - who together create and sustain the vibrant scholarly community that makes Jahangirnagar Geography and Environment.

Departing from the traditional geography, specialism of the department spans from micro level geography to macro geographical and environmental fields and the emergent sciences of Geographical Information System (GIS), Remote Sensing (RS) and Environmental Modeling (EM). The Department ensures an excellent teaching learning and research atmosphere that enables its students to achieve a strong foundation, expertise and research skills in different field of Geography and Environment, so that they can be fit and well suited for a variety of services. Through a successful completion of B.Sc. (Hons.) and MS programs the graduates achieve basic knowledge, trained up with modern methods, develop their writing, analytical, communication and team working skills, get ready for higher studies and research. Additionally they obtain the practical idea from real life situation. Through conducting M.Phil. and Ph.D. programs, the Department releases specialized resource persons capable in conducting independent research in their fields and serving in different research institution and organizations at home and abroad. The department has produced a number of M.Phil. and Ph.Ds, which is highest among other geography schools in the country. At present the department is also offering professional postgraduate program in GIS where students enrolled from different professional organizations ranging from national to international.

The department has successfully carried out a number of research works on issues of national interests in collaboration with different international agencies and universities, i.e. The Environmental Research Institute of Michigan, USA, University of Manitoba, Canada, IDRC, Canada, University of Durham, UK, University of Hull, UK, the British Council, the Overseas Development Agency (ODA), International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), Nepal, Salzburg University, Austria etc. The Department established a well-equipped modern GIS Lab, cartographic lab, a seminar library with good number of geographical books, journals and periodicals, a modern physical geography laboratory for soil and geo-chemical analyses. The Department is also maintaining a Meteorological station located in the university campus which is contributing in micro Climatic Research.

As the Department of Geography and Environment is one of the pioneer departments of this University, realizing the needs, importance and scopes, in 2018 a PSAIP of the Department has been prepared for the duration of 2019-2022. The PSAIP has prepared by following the instruction of IQAC of JU and based on the views of the stakeholders participated in the Self-Assessment (SA) of the Department, recommendations of the EPR report and the discussions with the academic members of the department. This plan is for next four years with the mission, goal and objectives of the department and is aligned to the vision, mission, goal and objectives of the JU. This PSAIP, therefore, will help the department to make the program updated, improved and need based in order to reach its desired improvement and to make the department to be a center of excellence in higher education and research in Geography and Environment in Bangladesh and beyond.
