The goal of this study is to apply a proposal for studying sustainability of tourist mobility to a protected space, the island of Lanzarote, which has been declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. This paper seeks to figure out the mobility patterns of tourists, the criterion used to select a mode of transportation, the attitude of tourists towards the sustainability of transport, and its environmental implications by analyzing secondary sources and interviewing tourists. The results show that the tourism model of the island is based on scattered natural resources that tourists want to enjoy in a tailor-made visit, which makes it hard to give up individual transportation.

  • Spain (Lanzaroteанаcanary Islands): Volcano Island's Route, Tailormade
Spain (Lanzarote Canary Islands): Volcano Island's Route, tailormade by car Explore a land of contrasts from behind the wheel Discover this stunning island on a fascinating road trip. A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Lanzarote masterfully harmonises bustling tourist resorts with quaint whitewashed houses, unspoilt areas, spectacular beaches lapped by emerald waters, and movieworthy landscapes portrayed in films such as 'One Million Years B.C' and 'In the Heart of the Sea'. The island is a whim of nature, gracefully shaped by a volcanic past and respected by the influence of humankind. Today it's impossible to imagine Lanzarote without the creative genius of the worldrenowned César Manrique. Life in the socalled Land of Fire is ever so laidback, oblivious to tedious everyday problems. Particular highlights include the lunar landscape of the Timanfaya National Park, the Jameos del Agua volcanic caves, the Cueva de los Verdes volcanic tube, and the Mirador del Río viewpoint, to name just a few. And foodies will love the outstanding cuisine, washed down by the wonderful wines produced in Lanzarote. Land of history and tradition, artists flock here in search of lost inspiration. Of course, you always run the risk of wanting to end up staying, as Omar Sharif and José Saramago did. You'll also get to enjoy some amazing experiences, such as sailing over to the nearby island of La Graciosa or riding a camel through the socalled Fire Mountains. Lanzarote is also blessed with an outstanding climate that has earned it the nickname of the island of eternal spring.

  • César Manrique: a Landscape Conscience
CÉSAR MANRIQUE: A LANDSCAPE CONSCIENCE Fernando SABATÉ, Joaquín SABATÉ and Antonio ZAMORA Magnificent studies have been written about the paintings and architecture by César Manrique. Instead we wish to focus on highlighting both César Manrique’s commitment to the landscape of his island, which even took precedence over his work as a painter, and how during the 1960’s and 70’s, he formulated a true territorial project for Lanzarote; one which he initially thought up tentatively and individually, but which was gradually refined, through defining and building it collectively over the course of the years 1.2 We would like to re-establish the current relevance of his legacy, as a magnificent example of how to look towards the future, and how to learn to respect our landscape and cultural heritage, which as José Saramago reminds us, is how we show respect to ourselves. César Manrique, Lanzarote, tourism, landscape, territorial project The appreciation of a cultural landscape At the start of the twentieth century, Lanzarote had an extremely unusual cultural landscape; Carl Sauer first defined this concept in 1925 inLa morfología del paisaje, as the result of the action of a social group on a natural landscape. Culture is the agent and Nature is the medium - the cultural landscape is the result. Sauer and the geographers from the Berkeley School proposed the notion of cultural landscape as an image linked to a territory - a specific place, characterized by a coherent and stable culture. We consider another meaning of culture to be the capacity of human beings to make habitable the place where they live, and therefore the ‘cultural landscape’ is the trace of this work on the territory, as if it were a memorial to an unknown worker.

  • The Anglican Parish of St Laurence in Lanzarote
The Anglican Parish of St Laurence in Lanzarote. Parish Profile. Our Presence on the Island St Laurence is an active Anglican Parish in Lanzarote, spread across three distinct areas of this beautiful holiday island, which has been declared a World Biosphere Reserve. Each area incorporates, or is close to, one of the three main tourist centres of Costa Teguise, Puerto del Carmen, and Playa Blanca. There is no Anglican Church building. Our services are held in the Roman Catholic churches in those towns. Our only building on the island is the Chaplaincy house in Puerto del Carmen. Playa Blanca Puerto del Carmen Nazaret Communion services are held each Sunday at Puerto del Carmen at 12.30 pm, and at Playa Blanca at 5.00 pm. On the first and third Sunday of each month, a communion service is held at 10.00 am in the small village church of Nazaret. Apart from two ecumenical services each year, services for special festivals, for wedding blessings and for funerals, there are no mid-week services. Our chaplain undertakes some 40 wedding blessings each year. Last year (2015) there were 10 funerals and 2 baptisms. Pastoral activities on the island, include hospital visits and home communions. There are British schools on the island but, despite overtures from previous Chaplains, contact has not been encouraged, mainly due to the mixtures of denominations and nationalities. During the interregnum, many aspects of the Parish’s ministry have continued, including monthly fellowship lunches, fund-raising events, and some publicity activities. Occasions when we can meet together as a Parish are important to foster a sense of unity between the three congregations.

  • The Case of the Canary Islands
sustainability Article A Decision-Making and Governance Framework for the Renewal of Tourism Destinations: The Case of the Canary Islands Manuel Rodríguez-Díaz 1,* and Rosa Rodríguez-Díaz 2 1 Department of Economics and Business Management, Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 35017 Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain 2 Department of Financial Economics and Accounting, Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 35017 Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain; [email protected] * Correspondence: [email protected]; Tel.: +34-928-452-802 Received: 10 December 2017; Accepted: 21 January 2018; Published: 25 January 2018 Abstract: Tourism destinations in advanced stages of the life cycle need to update their lodging offers and infrastructures. The main problem is that new destinations are planned according to the new preferences of customers, creating critical problems in older destinations related to the architecture of the buildings, size of the rooms, dimension of lodgings, complementary offer, and infrastructures. The aim of this paper is to develop a decision-making and governance framework for the renewal of destinations in an advanced stage of the life cycle that require the renovation of the lodging offer and infrastructures in order to increase their competitiveness and sustainability. The decisions were planned and carried out in the Canary Islands by stakeholders involved in the public and private sectors. The evaluation of actions to renew the lodgings and infrastructures through special legislation, leadership, sources of financing, and investment guarantees is presented to determine the level of success obtained. Because the Canary Islands is one of the main tourist destinations in Europe, the actions and procedures presented can be used in other destinations with similar characteristics.
