Markham knows how to bring ’em! Lastly, welcome to a new event and stage this year – Piano Fest! We celebrate the piano’s foundational place in jazz music in the beautiful sanctuary of the Central United Church, just south of the Bandstand. We’re going for something between a jazz club vibe and a cathedral recital. Hear the vibrancy of Hilario Durán, trios led by Stacie McGregor and Thompson Egbo-Egbo, astounding soloists Attila Fias and Jeff McLeod, and students from around Markham. All perform on a beautiful Steinway grand piano. A big thank-you to the committee: The TD Markham Jazz Festival would not be possible without the hard work of passionate volunteers. It’s a wonderful community to be a part of. High-five a volunteer and consider joining us next year! As always, thanks for coming and sharing in the magic!

Neon Eagle is an improvising quartet led by Michael Eckert at the pedal steel guitar. Inspired by musicians from across the world spectrum, the group strives to create melodies and soundscapes in the moment. The quartet is anchored by Rich Brown on bass and Galen Pelley on drums. Nick Maclean Quartet 4:00 – 5:30 pm This contemplative and often thrilling quartet’s explorations of modern, original repertoire is led by a fast-rising star in Toronto’s jazz piano community, 26-year-old Nick Maclean. Formed in 2016, Maclean’s foursome delivers jazz between the two poles of thoughtful introspection and powerhouse conveyance, taking influences from Herbie Hancock’s primordial 1960s Blue Note-era recordings while featuring Brownman Ali, one of Canada’s most provocative, improvising, trumpet-playing iconoclasts. www.nicholasmaclean.com

Dobranotch 2:30 – 4:00 pm Russia’s Dobranotch performs its own irreverent brand of Jewish, Gypsy and Balkan traditional music, drawing on deep knowledge of traditions, rich experience in traveling and interacting with traditional musicians from different countries. The band’s rep- ertoire includes Russian songs of the golden age of brass bands. Dobranotch features many of the leading players in Russia’s post- Soviet Jewish music renaissance, and has toured more than 20 countries and recorded seven albums. Co-presented with the Ashkenaz Festival. http://dobranotch.ru/english.html

Nefe 4:30 – 6:00 pm Combining the soulful power of Tracy Chapman, the uniqueness of Bruno Mars, and a voice that can silence a room, singer/songwriter Nefe is a burgeoning Canadian talent who is sure to take the industry by storm in the coming years. Born Sarah Jea Felker, Nefe hails from Guelph, Ontario. Her stage name was adopted from Queen Nefertiti. Though Nefe is soft spoken, she is loud on the inside, a woman whose rich soul and expressive voice shines through her music. www.facebook.com/nefemusic

Devin Cuddy 4:30 – 6:00 pm A lanky young man sits at a battered piano in a dark, cramped club. His hair falls in large sweaty tussles over his eyes. As he kicks his band into the immortal, Mystery Train, he cocks his head toward the crowd, Jerry Lee Lewis-style. The setting could indeed be Memphis or New Orleans in 1959, but this is Markham in 2018 where a new generation has picked up rock and roll’s torch -- chasing the rhythm with pure heart and soul. www.devincuddy.com

ROTARY CLUB Message from the Markham-Unionville Rotary Club George ‘Mitch’ Mitchell The Mitch Mitchell Award is presented to an up-and-coming young jazz performer by the Markham-Unionville Rotary Club at each year’s Markham Jazz Festival. A co-founder of the Festival and Past President of the Markham-Unionville Rotary Club, Mitch was an accomplished musician and major jazz fan. This year, the 2018 award is presented to 17-year-old Kabir Birdi. At Markham District High School, Kabir has been the featured tenor sax (and at times piano) soloist with the senior jazz ensemble for two years. Music teacher and department head Mark Caswell notes, “Kabir is among the top five natural jazz musicians in all my time at MDHS. He has fantastic ears, an amazing talent for improvising, and an incredible ability to solo with almost any ensemble in a variety of styes. He is an excellent band mate, gener- ously sharing solo space with younger musi- cians.” Kabir will attend Ryerson in the fall. Congratulations, Kabir!! We know you have a great future in front of you!
