Walk down the stairs behind the McKay Art House and you’ll never want to leave the shade of the gorgeous willow tree. From the swinging stylings of Lily Frost to the closing raucous piano of Devin Cuddy, we’re in for a good time. Grab a cold drink, kick off your shoes and we’ll dance! Of course, our Millennium Bandstand is a space to honour incredible jazz. This year, Markham’s got soul! Soul’s rich history of jazz, gospel and blues inspires incredible contemporary artists like Deva Mahal, who headlines a must-see show on Friday night. Saturday night, we are thrilled to present jazz legend Dee Dee Bridgewater. Opening for Dee Dee is Ian Hendrickson-Smith (sax player of The Roots) with Morgan Childs’ Soul Jazz Revue. Markham knows how to bring ’em! Lastly, welcome to a new event and stage this year – Piano Fest! We celebrate the piano’s foundational place in jazz music in the beautiful sanctuary of the Central United Church, just south of the Bandstand. We’re going for something between a jazz club vibe and a cathedral recital. Hear the vibrancy of Hilario Durán, trios led by Stacie McGregor and Thompson Egbo-Egbo, astounding soloists Attila Fias and Jeff McLeod, and students from around Markham. All perform on a beautiful Steinway grand piano. A big thank-you to the committee: The TD Markham Jazz Festival would not be possible without the hard work of passionate volunteers. Meet the people who make the music! Andrew Craig Andrew Craig is a Guelph-based multi-instru- mentalist, vocalist, producer, director, composer, broadcaster and impresario. He has worked with Molly Johnson, Measha Brueggergosman, Jackie Richardson, Ashley MacIsaac and Wynton Marsalis. Andrew has directed for Canstage, Soulpepper Theatre and the Grand Theatre, and composed music for OMNI Television and numerous choreographers. Julian Fauth An award-winning composer, singer and pianist whose style emulates pre-war Barrelhouse Blues and Boogie Woogie, Julian has recorded five CDs with Electro-Fi Records.
