Photos by Pete Spatula he USSSA Conference Championships was supposed to be the top 10 teams in the country playing a double elimi- Tnation tournament in Viera, Florida at the Space Coast stadium over Labor Day Weekend. However, because of the pending arrival of Hurricane Dorian, 4 teams (SIS/Precision, SIS/Thunder, Xtreme, and Newbreed) decided to cancel their trip at the last moment and it ended up being a 6 team tour- nament played out over just a 24 hour period. They played all but one game in the stadium using the Dudley stadium ZN ball on the 325-365-385-365-325 foot field with a 12-16 home run limit depending on the matchup. 12 homers were allowed if there was a ‘AA’ classed team in the game and 16 if there were two Major teams playing each other. The bases were set at 75 feet. The tournament began on Friday after- noon at 3:00 PM in hot and humid conditions. #3 seeded Dan Smith/ Menosse/Steven Smith/FAI (CA-M) made short work of #6 Nightmare/ Miken (MO-AA) as Dan Smith scored 16 runs in the 1st inning, 8 more in the 2nd, and finished off Nightmare by the 30 run mercy rule in the 3rd with an incredible 13 run inning! They hit 11 Tournament MVP, Resmondo’s Jeremy Yates homers in the 3 innings and 8 doubles, led by catcher Argen Dodds who was 4-4 with 3 HR and 7 RBI. In game 2 the #4 Pure Sports Major team based out South Carolina after a slow start ended up beating #5 BayArea/ Rapid Fire/Bad Draw/Easton (CA-AA) 30-8 in 7 innings as they outhomered Bay Area 12-2 led by 2nd baseman Rich Racobaldo who was 5-6 with 3 HR and 4 RBI. It soon became obvious that the wind was blowing across the field from left to right and players were using the wind and hitting the ball towards right center field with the hopes the wind would carry it towards the foul pole for a home run. The “Final 4” of the winners bracket then started at 6:30 PM with Dan Smith jumping out to an 8-0 lead on #2 Resmondo/SIS/Thunder/RDD/H. (left to right): Offensive tournament MVP, Dan Smith’s Argen Dodds, Eddie Menosse and Steven Smith. T 6 COAST O COAST Big Time Softball Auto (FL-M). But Resmondo responded in the bottom of the 2nd with a 10 run inning and held the lead the rest of the way in a 26-19 victory. Dan Smith even though they lost, they outhomered Resmondo 14-8 but Resmondo out hit Dan Smith 26-23 and was led by the lefty Jeremy Yates who was 4-5 with 3 HR and 5 RBI. In the other semifinal game Pure Sports jumped out to a 10-3 lead on #1 seeded TDB/Racks/Athlon (NC-M) going into the bottom of the 4th inning. But it was TDB the rest of the way as they scored the last 22 runs of the game and left Pure Sports on the field in the bottom of the 6th inning winning by the mercy rule 25-10. Lefty outfielder Everett Williams led TDB in hitting as he went 4-4 with 2 HR, a double, 4 RBI, and 4 runs scored. Because the tournament was acceler- ated due to the incoming hurricane, the winner’s bracket was also played on Friday night at 9:00 PM under the lights! And it was #1 TDB vs #2 Resmondo in a heavy weight battle! TDB struck first getting out to an 8-2 lead in the 1st inning and the lead swapped back and forth for each half inning all the way until the 5th where it ended tied at 26-26. In the 6th inning both teams put up a zero but in the top of the 7th Resmondos Cory Briggs reached on an error. Then after a foul Defensive Tournament MVP, Resmondo’s Steele Lewis out, pinch hitter Travis Clark walked, and Brian Wegman hit a 3 run homer to break the stalemate. Resmondo would go on to score 7 more runs on homers by Neil Haglund, Bubba Mack, and Cory Briggs to go up 36-26 and TDB failed to score in the bottom of the 7th. In the loser’s bracket which started late on Friday night Dan Smiths Andrew Collins and Daniel Cayton each hit 3 homers in a 20-12 win over Bay Area. And Pure Sports scored 11 runs in the bottom of the 6th to take a 27-22 lead on Nightmare and won 27-26 getting the last out in the top of the 7th on a foul out. On Saturday morning the losers bracket resumed with Dan Smith scoring 18 runs in the bottom of the 2nd and beating Pure Sports by the 20 run mercy rule 32-12. In the loser’s bracket finals Dan Smith kept on a roll scoring 7 runs in the top of the 1st, The quiet before the storm (Dorian). Braking News The Official Newsletter of the Stratford Brakettes/Junior Brakettes/18U Select Brakettes Volumne 3,Issue 2 Editor: Bob Baird (203) 218-1066 December 2020 FAU SLUGGER ANSWERED THE ‘CALL’ FOR THE STRATFORD BRAKETTES Stephanie Call never got the opportunity to represent the United States on the softball diamond. She played her Brakettes career just three years into a 12-year hiatus from softball’s next scheduled appearance in the 2020 Olympics. Well, she finally got her chance to play for Team USA last summer as a member of the USA Softball Women’s Slow Pitch Futures team. It’s doubtful she would have received a look if there had been Olympic Games in 2012 or 2016 since the selection process is heavily slanted toward college standouts in the Power Five Conferences. It’s similar to the College Football Playoff where the SEC, Big Ten, and ACC are the chief powerbrokers. Nevertheless, Stephanie Call played on some of the finest teams in Brakettes softball history from 2011-2014. She played three years and eight games, a total of 202 games. During that time the Brakettes compiled a 200-8 overall record and posted two unbeaten seasons (2011 and 2013). Coming to Stratford from Florida Atlantic University, where she played for Hall of Famer Joan Joyce, the 6-foot-2 Call arrived highly touted and she didn’t disappoint. The Fort Lake, FL, native set the individual season home run record with 31 in her first year and followed with marks of 21 and 22. Coming back for a long weekend in 2014, Call played in eight wins and hit five solo homers in 16 at bats, finishing her career with 79 home runs, good for the No.
