Instead, this study redirects focus toward the neo-religious nature of modern spirituality; that is, the fulfillment of Thomas Luckmann’s prediction that a significant aspect of modern spirituality would concern the need to construct a “self”the constantly shifting work of forming personal identity and enhancing self understanding. As such, internal commitments and intense devotion may perform as a de facto “invisible religion” in the lives of people. As popular culture provides useful texts toward satisfying this ongoing work, professional sports can act as a conduit of both personal and collective self understanding for “highly identified fans,” subsequently operating as an invisible religion within their lives.     John J. Grabowski John J. Grabowski holds a joint position as the Krieger-Mueller Historian and Vice President for Collections at the Western Reserve Historical Society and the Krieger- Mueller Associate Professor of Applied History at Case Western Reserve University. He has been with the Society in various positions in its library and museum since 1969. In addition to teaching at CWRU he serves as the editor of The Encyclopedia of Cleveland History and The Dictionary of Cleveland Biography, both of which are available on-line on the World Wide Web (http://ech.cwru.edu). He has also taught at Cleveland State University, Kent State University, and Cuyahoga Community College. During the 1996- 1997 and 2004-2005 academic years he served as a senior Fulbright lecturer at Bilkent University in Ankara, Turkey. Dr. Grabowski received his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees in history from Case Western Reserve University. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa. His publications include The Encyclopedia of Cleveland History, The Dictionary of Cleveland Biography, and Cleveland: A Tradition of Reform, all of which he co-edited with the late Dr. David D. Van Tassel. He is also the author of Sports in Cleveland: An Illustrated History; and co-author of Polish Americans and Their Communities in Cleveland. He and his wife Diane are the authors of Cleveland: A History in Motion, and Cleveland: Then and Now. They, along with Professor David Hammack, are the editors of Identity, Conflict & Cooperation: Central Europeans in Cleveland, 1850-1930. He has also written numerous articles relating to immigration history and to archival issues.

DOLAN OWNER/CHAIRMAN/CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER The Dolan family's ownership of the Cleveland Indians enters its 22nd season in 2021, while Paul Dolan begins his ninth campaign as the primary control person of the franchise after being formally approved by Major League Baseball on Jan. 10, 2013. Paul continues to serve as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Indians, roles that he accepted prior to the 2011 season. He began as Vice President, General Counsel of the Indians upon joining the organization in 2000 and later served as the club's President from 2004-10. Paul was born and raised in nearby Chardon, Ohio where he attended high school at Gilmour Academy in Gates Mills. He graduated with a B.A. degree from St. Lawrence University in 1980 and received his Juris Doctorate from the University of Notre Dame’s Law School in 1983. Prior to joining the Indians, Paul was a partner at Thrasher, Dinsmore & Dolan, a Chardon, Ohio based law firm. Dolan is involved in various business interests throughout Northeast Ohio and is engaged with many philanthropic and civic boards throughout the Northeast Ohio community. He is currently Chairman of United Way of Greater Cleveland and serves as a board member for The Cleveland Clinic, Greater Cleveland Partnership, Playhouse Square Foundation, Unify Labs and Evergreen Cooperatives. Paul has been the co-chairman for VeloSano Bike to Cure in each of the event's first six years (2014-19) and also races as an Indians team member. The current ethos surrounding sports is one of individualism, instrumentalism, and market efficiency. This perspective led to a morally troublesome hyper-competitive orientation toward sports. Characterized by a win-at-all-costs, individualistically motivated attitude, our instrumental perspective of sports caused their morally educative potential (if indeed any exists at all) to be inadequately realized. This study constitutes a reassessment of sport’s potential to act as a resource for promoting moral education employing perspectives provided by virtue ethics in general and ‘existential’ authenticity and civic virtue specifically. Following an introductory chapter outlining the sequence of my overall argument, the second chapter will provide a snapshot of moral life for modern Americans, effectively substantiating the need for my research.
