DALTON AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM Digital Class Catalog Winter 2020-21 Welcome to the Dalton Virtual After School Programs Fall 2020 Brochure!

This winter we are excited to share an eclectic range of old and new online class options in Dance, Comedy, Coding, Art, Music, and much more, to be conducted virtually over Zoom. The winter brochure includes all after school classes for grades K-8. You’ll find First Program classes at the beginning of the brochure and Middle School offerings are located midway.

The winter trimester runs from Monday, January 11 to Friday, March 19, 2020. Classes typically meet once a week unless otherwise noted, for a total of 8-10 sessions depending on the day class is offered. First Program classes will run from 4:15-5:15 PM and Middle School classes will run from 4:45-5:45 PM, unless otherwise noted. Classes will be a combination of synchronous, asynchronous, and hybrid sessions. Classes will not be conducted in person or on site.

Registration begins on Saturday, December 12 at 11:00 AM and will take place on Dalton’s Campbrain system. All financial credits from the previous terms will be reflected in your shopping cart upon registering.

Enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis with a waitlist option. Financial assistance is available and is commensurate with a family’s tuition assistance plan with the single exception of Private and Semi-Private lessons.

Registration

Registration opens Saturday, December 12 at 11:00 AM. Register at https://dalton.campbrainregistration.com. Enrollment is first come, first served and available spaces will update as registration progresses. Upon submitting your registration, you will receive an email confirmation.

Billing

Payment is due upon submitting the registration form. Class totals will be reflected in your “Shopping Cart” and reflect financial aid percentages. All registrations will be required to pay a $25 registration fee (eligible for tuition assistance). Registration fees are non-refundable.

Financial Aid Scholarships

There is a maximum scholarship of 50% assistance on Vocal Coaching and Private Guitar Lessons. All other classes are eligible for full tuition assistance percentages assigned by the school. If you have not already received your Tuition Assistance Code, please contact Jennifer Beasmoney at [email protected]. Payment plans are also available to families on Tuition assistance.

Refunds

There are no refunds for enrolled classes after the start of the term. Dropped classes will receive 75% credit to their After School account after the 1st session. There are no refunds or credits after the 2nd session of a class has passed. There will be no refund if there is an absence or substitution of any teacher. Late Fees are non-refundable.

Class Changes

All changes to enrolled classes must be made by email to [email protected] and [email protected] on or before January 15 at no charge. Class withdrawals will be subject to the refund policy.

Late Registration

A non-refundable Late Registration fee of $25 will be applied to all registrations received on or after Wednesday, January 6. The Late Registration period ends on Friday, January 22.

Classes

Winter Trimester classes will be conducted online for the entire term.

• There will be no make up sessions for classes missed by students

• Families are responsible for providing all necessary materials. A list of materials is included on the After School website.

• Additional classes can be added at any point during the registration period ending on January 22

• Rosters for the first week will be finalized on Wednesday, January 6. There is no guarantee you will receive zoom information in time for the first session if you register late

• We reserve the right to cancel any course if necessary, including but not

limited to insufficient enrollment. If a class is canceled, families will have the opportunity to enroll in another course or receive a full refund or credit.

• Classes will not be prorated for any reason

• Classes will not be held on holidays or Professional Development Days, but will be in session on Report Days

Mini-Musical Calling all aspiring singers, actors, and dancers! Explore the Class Time: 4:15-5:15 PM wonders of Broadway and Musical Theater as you learn and Grades: K-3 (Max 12 students) perform selections from Frozen as a mini-musical! Design and Instructor: Solon Snider & Cassidy Dermott create your own costumes! Join this exciting and rigorous production and show-stopping performance starring Dalton’s own rising stars!

Private Guitar Lessons One-on-one, 30-minute guitar lessons for all levels. Bring your Class Time: 30 minute individual session to be own acoustic guitar and learn the fundamentals of guitar assigned between 4:00-5:30 PM playing in a gentle, nurturing atmosphere. Students will learn Grades: 1-8 (Max 5 students) basic melodies and chords, as well as fun guitar riffs from Instructor: Michael Cioferro popular rock and pop bands.

In the days of the great Walt Disney, Grades: 2-3 (Max 8 students) the world of animation was considered a world of magic. Now Instructor: Noah Chevan and Kevin Gordon the secret of how “the magic is made” is out! Learn 2D animation techniques to make amazing short animations projects, with an exciting final project at the end!

Lights, Camera, Action! Lights, Camera, Action (LCA) is an interactive film program Class Time: 4:15-5:15 PM designed to introduce young students to the art of movie Grades: 2-5 (Max 16 students) making. Write, Direct, Produce and Star in your very own film! Instructor: Noel Calloway When the work is done, invite your friends and family to the “red carpet premiere” and show off all you’ve learned and done Class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays in the program.

Mandarin This course will be a hybrid of live instruction and independent Class Time: 4:15-5:15 PM work where students engage with the fundamentals of spoken Grades: 1-3 and written Mandarin including pinyin, tones, basic characters, Instructor: Shi Hong Aldin and simple grammar. Through dong, games, stories, and crafts, students will learn numbers time, weather, and simply talk about themselves. We will also celebrate several Chinese holidays!

*New* Bootcamp Boogie Join in fun exercises designed to get the heart-pumping. Class Time: 4:15-5:15 PM Boogie to tunes from around the world while we workout. Grades: K-2 (Max 10 students) Session themes include superheroes, animals and video games. Instructor: Adam Blake Soden Students will discover an exciting way to enjoy endurance activities, often called aerobic or cardio, which keep the heart and lungs healthy.

Chess 3 This class is for those who have completed the Advanced Class Time: 4:45-6:15 PM Beginner (Chess 2) or its equivalent. Intended for 2nd graders Grades: 1-8 (Max 18 students) but may include 1st or 3rd graders. Classical Ballet Come dance and join us as we explore the magical world of Class Time: 4:15-5:15 PM Ballet! Learn the fundamentals and progress into an Grades: K-3 (Max 10 students) exploration of both dance and classical and contemporary Instructor: Bianca Masterson music. Hard work, creativity, and a love of dance will be encouraged in this creative environment.

Dance Fusion You will acquire appreciation and knowledge of what dance Class Time: 4:15-5:15 PM means to different cultures and explore different styles of dance Grades: 1-5 (Max 10 students) in each class session! Fun House Zoom Room: Come join us for the new virtual version of Fun House! Beginning Ukulele For kids eager to start learning a string instrument, ukulele is Class Time: 4:15-5:15 PM a fun and accessible way to begin. In this innovative class, you Spark Business will learn what it takes to launch your own business and gain skills in strategy, marketing and finance – all at a kid-friendly Class Time: 4:15-5:15 PM level! Chess 4 If you have completed Chess 3 or are in a bridge group between Class Time: 4:45-6:15 PM Chess 3 and Chess 4, this is the right level for you. Creative Movement Let’s get moving! Join your classmates as we build artistry, Class Time: 4:15-5:15 PM creativity, and musicality through movement in the comfort of Grades: K-3 (Max 10 students) our own space! Through ballet based vocabulary, many forms of Instructor: Bianca Masterson movement and varieties of dance will be explored.

*New* Game On! Jump into your favorite video games and board games to Class Time: 4:45-5:45 PM exercise! Workouts will incorporate elements from games Grades: 3-5 (Max 10 students) you love like Fortnite, Minecraft, and Among Us. The inclusion Instructor: Adam Blake Soden of music and virtual interaction in this course aims to make physical fitness engaging and fun. Working out won’t even seem like work.

15 Class Descriptions - Thursday Classes

Hindi Learn the wonders of the Hindi language and South Asian Class Time: 4:00-5:00 PM culture! Our program teaches basic and conversational Hindi. Grades: K-3 (Minimum 6, Maximum 10 students) A theme-based and multi-sensorial approach introduces Hindi Instructor: Rachna Khanna & Anu Sehgal through stories, music, songs, art, movement, meditation, and even food!

Little Dalton Inventors Come learn the basic fundamentals of STEAM! Enjoy engaging, Class Time: 4:15-5:15 PM hands-on projects. Learn the history and functionality of Grades: K-2 (Max 12 students) inventions that we use today in the modern world. Shi Hong Aldin

Shi Hong is a Chinese native and an American Citizen who graduated from Shanghai Theater Academy with a BA in Spoken Drama. She has worked as a Mandarin instructor in since 1995. Shi Hong taught children ages 3 to 12 as well as adults at the China Institute (1995-2006); Marymount School After School Program (2000-’01) the Dalton School Serendipity Program (2000-’04) and returns again as of 2018 to head up our Mandarin program! Shi Hong’s relationship to Dalton extends to the school day as she taught Grades 5 to 8 in the Middle School from 2006-2011. She uses her understanding of Mandarin as well as her training and passion for acting, singing, and dancing to reinforce the academic lessons. Her goal is to create an interesting, entertaining and educational environment for children to learn the Chinese language.

Jennifer Beasmoney

Jennifer is Associate Director for all Dalton After School Programs and the On-Site Coordinator of After School Programs at the Middle School. Jennifer is a Creative Writing graduate of Hunter College and achieved her Master’s Degree from Stony Brook University. She served in 2007-08 as Head Teacher for Kids Club in ASP and conducted the Fun House Serendipity class after school. In addition to her enthusiasm for working with children in a school setting, Jennifer loves to write, knit, and crochet. She wrote briefly for Jukepop, a website dedicated to writing serials that appear weekly or bi-weekly. Much of her knit and crochet work reflects various superhero and fandoms that inspire her.

Doug Berns ’06

Doug is a Dalton Alumnus who currently wears multiple “hats” with the Middle School After School Program. In addition to being head instructor of the homework club, Doug has taken over Dalton’s After School Rock Band and introduced a class in Music Editing and Production using Garage Band. In addition to working extensively with the Middle school After School since 2011, Doug Berns has been a professional touring musician for 15+ years. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Columbia University in 2010. He has rocked stages from Los Angeles to Tokyo with such bands as Antibalas Orchestra, EMEFE and The YeahTones, and most recently started his very own Doug Berns Band. He has shared the stage with such luminaries as Lenny Pickett, The Daptones, Big Boi, Arcade Fire, and Passion Pit. He is excited to share the joy of musical collaboration with the Dalton Community this coming school year.

Adam Blake Soden

Adam hails from Los Angeles, California and is the proud father of three Dalton students. At Geoffrey Canada’s renowned Children’s Zone Promise Academy II elementary and middle school, Adam developed his passion for instructing children in sports and physical fitness. As the Athletic Director he introduced golf, swimming, and soccer classes to a school where basketball and volleyball had previously been the only available sports. Adam was recently the lead physical education instructor at a Bronx charter elementary school. After learning public schools would be required to implement distance learning, he was tasked with creating and implementing remote lesson plans for Kindergarten through fifth grade. He is currently enjoying working in PlayLab with the First Program at the Dalton gymnasium and Middle School at Asphalt Green. He is thrilled to work with the After School Program and hopes to inspire students to fall in love with fitness.

Noel Calloway

Noel is an independent filmmaker who created the Lights, Camera, Action! program to combine two per- sonal passions: film and youth development. Noel is the Writer and Director of the award winning feature film “Life, Love, Soul” (released theatrically and on worldwide home video in 2013) as well as a host of other film projects. Noel studied film at Clark Atlanta University before returning to New York City in 2002 to start the production company Noel Calloway Films. Noel enjoyed a career in youth development working as Program Director, Case Manager, Teen Program Director, and Day Camp Director at organizations such as The YMCA of Greater NY, Phipps CDC, SCAN NY and the NYC Department of Education. In 2007 Noel began working full time as a writer and filmmaker but continued to have a desire to reconnect with young people. While still working full time as a filmmaker, the Lights, Camera, Action program was born. Noel has taught the program in various schools and community-based organizations since 2012. He is also the proud parent of Dalton student Kellen Calloway ’26.

Noah Chevan

Noah has been teaching technology and media arts classes since 2013, focusing on students’ creative exploration while acquiring technical skills. He instructed at Oberlin College, Powrplnt (a digital learning space based in Bushwick), and at a multitude of public school after school programs in New York City. As a continuing after school teacher at Dalton, Noah welcomes the opportunity to share his passion for creative and intentional technology practices.

Nina Chong-Jimenez

Nina is a native New Yorker who has studied on scholarship with Ballet Hispanico and as a trainee at The Joffrey Ballet school. Ms. Chong holds her B.F.A. In Dance Performance from Belhaven University in Jackson, MS, and has studied and performed with Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company in Israel. She currently works as a guest artist for Rennie Harris Puremovement, is a company dancer for Michael Mao Dance Company and Dance into Deliverance, and is currently on contract with H.T. Chen and Dancers. She loves teaching the children at The Dalton School and considers it a privilege to do so.

Michael Cioffero

Michael has a Master’s Degree in Classical Guitar Performance and has taught classical and electric guitar for 16 years, including the Serendipity After School program at The Dalton School. In addition, he is a registered Suzuki classical guitar instructor with the Suzuki Association of the Americas. Several of Michael’s students have gone on to study at major music conservatories such as, the Manhattan School of music, the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and Northwestern University. Michael has studied with Christopher Parkening and William Kanengiser and has been featured in Rolling Stone magazine and on VH1.

Cassidy Dermott

Cassidy is a based actor, voice over artist, and clown. She’s most recently performed with Big Apple Circus, is the voice for several animated programs. and is a writer of original children’s musicals that are regularly performed by Brooklyn Children’s Theatre. She is currently teaching Mini Musical and Dance classes in both Serendipity and Encore! Programs! Nelson Dunn

Nelson teaches beginning chess at Dalton. He participates in tournaments and is a consistent presence in the classroom, contributing to the skill and confidence of our littlest players “across the board”!

Lisa Fader

Lisa is an enthusiastic educator devoted to making a difference in children’s lives. She likes to incorporate arts and crafts in her lessons, as well as hands-on activities that will keep students engaged. Her classes help children build self-esteem, and she is an advocate of anti-bullying practices through collaboration and teamwork. Lisa holds bachelors and graduate degrees in Communications. Lisa currently works with the SPARK Business Academy, which is in its second year at First Program, and is excited to bring her own Leadership and Team Building classes to the Middle School!

Kevin Gordon

Kevin is a 3D Artist/Generalist who graduated from Mercy College with his BFA in 3D Modeling and Animation. He is currently pursuing his Masters degree in Georgia, but still remains an active part of the Dalton community with the Little Dalton Inventors class he created. Kevin loves 3D design as it enables him to use constructive thinking and problem solving to make great ideas come to life. He has been an instructor, mentor, and tutor for many children over the past few years. He has primarily worked in after school programs and believes that the future of learning is in the 3D and digital medium field. In addition to 3D design, he experiments with re-creating various different inventions in his free time. Being ever curious, he is always looking into and researching how different inventions and techniques came to be.

Nichole Gray

Nichole is a multi-disciplinary artist whose work ranges from fashion design to painting and mixed media collage. Her fine art work explores the beautiful, powerful, and impactful intricacies of African American history and culture. Her four grandparents who all were impactful in her life, lived a unique and important journey in the African American experience, and have served to be perennial inspiration in her work. Nichole received a BFA in English from Wesleyan University in 1991, and earned an MFA from Maryland Institute College of Art in 1994. She served as Associate Professor on Howard University’s Fine Arts faculty for 8 years and taught multiple courses ranging from 2-D Design to Fashion Illustration. She ran an Experimental Studio program which included a multi-tiered series of mixed media courses. A return to New York inspired her to grow her business designing bridal gowns for private clients. Currently she teaches adult education and is back in the studio making large scale mixed media collage with her brand new studio mate and faithful sidekick, 5-year-old rescue Schnoodle Willie, who will undoubtedly find her way into some of the art work!

Susan Grossman Nieves

Susan is Director of After School Programs at Dalton. She attended Kirkland/Hamilton Colleges and Cornell University earning a BA in Creative Writing and Literature and certification in Elementary Education. Her early graduate studies earned an MA in Counselor Education from New York University. She has completed a fifth year of doctoral studies in Applied Psychology at NYU, with a focus on multiculturalism and bereavement. Susan was a Board member of My Hands, My Tools for several years, an organization that promotes environmental sustainability and repurposing through the arts internationally. She is an active volunteer in Amani Global Works, an organization founded by a Dalton family, with an enduring mission to insure sustainable healthcare and education on the Island of Idjwi in Africa. She is a volunteer for Tracysdogs, a rescue that rehabilitates and rehomes dogs from high kill shelters near the border of Mexico. A former singer-songwriter who gets vicarious pleasure working among the artistic community of the After School Program, her happiest moments are spent in the company of her best buddy and daughter, Sarah Mimi and with sweet Andrew Evan, the youngest (and tallest!) member of the family.

Joi A. Jackson

Joi is an alumna of The University of the Arts where she received her BFA in Dance with a minor in Theatre. Joi has trained with distinguished companies such as: Dance Theater of Harlem, Joffrey Ballet, and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Her company experience includes ArcheDream for Humankind, Movement for the Urban Village, Young Jean Lee Theater Company and Danzare Internationale. She has been privileged to work as the principal dance instructor as well as artist in residency at Leadership Village Academy, P.S. 96, Harlem Leadership Dance Program, and Shaw Middle School. Joi is delighted to return to the talented staff of the Dalton School ASP!

Epah Jere

Epah is an international chess master from Zambia who is determined to impart her knowledge to her students—not only the sport’s elements but also the educational value that chess offers. Epah holds a diploma in Business Administration from the University of Zambia and is excited to join Dalton to assist with the K-3 chess curriculum and after school chess program.

Rachna Khanna

Rachna is a native Hindi speaker and she is the head Hindi teacher at The Culture Tree. She is a mother of twin 15-year-olds, who speak Hindi fluently and are strongly grounded in Indian culture. Her passion is to teach Hindi to other children. She has been working with FP After School for several years onsite and more recently online. Her teaching style is gentle and fun!

Kassa Korley ’11

Kassa (Dalton Class of 2011) has returned from traveling the world over the past year in his pursuit to become the youngest African American Grandmaster in history to teach a Wednesday chess class in the after school program! Playing the game remains a great passion but he has now extended that energy and enthusiasm to teaching and has found it to be a great way to share his 20 years of experience with the royal game! Nitai Leve

Nitai graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from the University of Michigan and is currently pursuing a Masters in Education at the Hunter College School of Education. Before committing to teaching chess full time, he worked in biostatistics at Weill Cornell Medical School and in data analysis at a business intelligence startup. His chess playing accolades include an All-American team placement, a National Master title, and numerous top 10 finishes in scholastic national championships. Nitai has maintained his passion for chess excellence over the years and was President of the chess club at the University of Michigan. As a chess coach, Nitai has accompanied school teams to major scholastic tournaments and has groomed individuals and teams to success at the national level. He is very appreciative of the opportunity he has been given to improve the self confidence, problem solving skills, and work ethic of many children.

Beatriz Marinello

Beatriz is currently the Director of the Dalton Chess Program and First Program Chess Teacher as well as a World Chess Federation Chess Trainer, Woman International Master and International Chess Organizer. Beatriz was a captain & player of the US Women Olympic Chess team (1994). She is a recipient of the prestigious Chess Educator of the Year Award by the University of Texas, Dallas, an award that recognizes her outstanding contributions to chess in education over the years. Beatriz has made teaching chess to children a main focus in her life and continues to promote chess and education all over the world. She has been involved in organizing National and International Chess Championships, Charity Events, and provides services for Non-Profit Organizations that help promote chess around the world.

Joachim Marx

Joachim holds an MFA from the New York Academy of Art. He has worked as an independent artist since 1991 and has exhibited in galleries and museums in his native Germany and the US. He worked creatively with children in a kindergarten and in an orphanage as well as with adults in a psychiatric hospital in Germany. He is also a proud Dalton parent. Bianca Masterson

Bianca is from Sarasota, Florida. She received most of her classical dance training from the Sarasota Ballet School of Florida and continued dancing for the Sarasota Ballet on scholarship in the Trainee program. Ms. Masterson attended Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida, where she was accepted into the School of Dance. While at the University, Ms. Masterson was a Soloist in The Tallahassee Ballet Company and a faculty member for The Tallahassee Ballet School. After receiving her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance in 2014, Ms. Masterson moved to New York City and began teaching in the Junior Division and First Steps Program at The Ailey School as well as the Pre Ballet program at Ballet Academy East.

Mackenzie Molner

Mackenzie is a chess Grandmaster. After graduating from NYU in 2011, he has devoted himself full time to playing and coaching chess. He has coached many championship level teams and players, including coaching the American World Youth Team and a student to a world youth championship. Mackenzie’s best accomplishments as a player include being 3 time State Champion, Co-Champion of the 2013 US Chess Open, and contestant in the 2014 US Chess Championship. When not playing or teaching chess, Mackenzie likes to play soccer and rock climb.

Bobby Morgan

Bobby is a freelance dancer/choreographer based in New York City. He has received diverse training from: Desmond Richardson/Dwight Rhoden of Complexions Contemporary Ballet, Dana Foglia, and Erica Sobol, to name a few. Bobby holds a Certificate of completion from Peridance’s Intensive Semester Program in NYC and has also been involved in The Gypsy Project 2017 in Los Angeles. Along with ballet/ contemporary influence, he integrates styles such as voguing, hip hop, house and jazz to form one language. As an artist, his mission is to bring forth cohesive art in an effort to bring together the classical and commercial dance communities, and appreciate the art form of dance as a bridge we use to relate to each other.

Malachi Nimmons

Malachi is a comedian and actor who hails from Chattanooga, TN. He has performed stand up comedy at venues all across the country and has performed in NYC with Chicago City Limits, NYC’s longest running comedy revue, since 2012. As an actor Malachi can be seen on “Blue Bloods” (CBS), “The Mysteries Of Laura” (NBC), “World’s Dumbest” (TruTv), and on Aziz Ansari’s “Master of None”. Malachi has taught comedy and improvisation to all ages with Chicago City Limits for 3 years, and teaches independently in NYC for theater tour groups and theater camps.

Jack Parault

Jack is a former First Program Chef at The Dalton School. He is an international chef who was born and raised in France. His three year apprenticeship prepared him for his work as chef at a restaurant in Paris. He then spent two years as a chef in Japan before doing an 8 month stint at the Hilton Hotel in Peking. Prior to coming to Dalton he worked for NBC and Columbia Grammar Prep School through FLIK. He re-joins us for another year of delicious after school classes. Fall trimester is “VIrtual LIve” and equally yummy!

Eve Pomerantz ’98

Eve has 8 years of experience teaching at Hunter College High School where she taught 7th and 8th grade art. She has experience teaching in many public and private schools in NYC, including 2 schools for the gifted. She has an MA in Art and Art Education from Columbia Teachers College and she is an experienced artist. She has completed a prestigious commission for the town of Stratford-upon-Avon and her bronze cast sculpture of King Lear is permanently installed in The Shakespeare Tree Garden. She has since gotten many grants for bronze cast sculpture and has created an impressive body of work in acrylic painting as well. Eve is thrilled to return to teach after school classes at Dalton, especially because she is honored to call the school her alma mater!

Narita Ramnath

Narita is a bilingual educator with over 5 years of successful experience working for the NYC Department of Education and 1 year for The Dalton School. Narita has experience working with students of all ages and with students with special disabilities. Originally from Park Slope, Brooklyn, Narita received her Bachelors of Arts from the State University at Binghamton. She loves teaching and helping her students creatively grow academically. During her spare time she enjoys traveling, reading, and spending time with her loved ones.

Sean Salant

Sean is a guitarist, songwriter, performer, recording artist, and educator in the New York City area. Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, his love for guitar began at a very young age and it continues to grow to this day. Learning a variety of styles allowed Sean the opportunity to perform and collaborate with many artists throughout his career in an array of genres including pop rock, thrash metal, metalcore, indie rock, neo soul , jazz and gospel, as well as writing original music with his main project Adequate Fur. He has performed around the country and the New York City area with various artists (Awaken the Shadow, Doug Berns Band, Tristn, Mobius, Nova Lantern, Simca, Tootsweet) and has had the pleasure of recording at some of NYC’s top studios (Terminus Studios, East Side Sounds, Studio G, Big Blue Meanie, Salant Sound). In addition to playing, recording, and writing music, Sean has worked in special education for the DOE and has taught guitar classes for Dalton’s after school and summer programs. He is looking forward to another year of teaching and music making.

Christy Santorelli

Christy is a Third grade associate teacher at Dalton. Christy Santorelli received her Masters in Museum Education: Childhood from Bank Street College. Since then, she has taught at Ethical Culture Fieldston School in both Kindergarten and 2nd grade, Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, and Curious Jane Camp. Design is Christy’s passion and she tries to infuse it in every venture she can. While at Cooper Hewitt, Christy wrote curriculum, led tours, and taught at its Design Camp for three years. The principles of design thinking are at the heart of Christy’s teaching philosophy; empathy, hands-on learning, and using creativity to find solutions to everyday problems. She is very excited to join the after school program and looks forward to seeing and being inspired by the innovation, imagination, and problem-solving thinking of Dalton students.

Anu Sehgal

Anu grew up in India and moved to the US more than 20 years ago. Anu is an active parent and believes that awareness of one’s heritage, culture, and language is key for children to become self-aware and confident individuals. She also recognizes the immense benefits of being bilingual. She is the founder of The Culture Tree and has been certified in bilingual education from NYU and Columbia’s Startalk program. She also holds certification in Mindfulness education from Mindful Schools. The Culture Tree teaching style is fun and structured.

Alex Simmons

Alex is an award-winning freelance writer of plays, books, and comics; as well as a teaching artist, guest speaker and creative consultant. He’s written for Disney Books, Penguin Press, Simon and Schuster, DC Comics, and Archie Comics. Simmons is the creator of the acclaimed adventure comic book series, Blackjack, and he’s developed concepts and scripts for several animation projects. As a teaching artist, Simmons has developed and taught master classes and workshops for students and educators in the US, West Indies, Africa, and Europe. He’s served on panels, and delivered lectures on children’s entertainment mediums, as well as empowering young people through the arts. Simmons founded the annual family event, Kids Comic Con, and three comic arts exhibits, which have traveled abroad. Solon Snider

Solon is thrilled to join the teaching staff of the Encore and Serendipity After School Programs this year. Solon is a composer/lyricist/librettist, musical director, singer, and performer. He holds a BA in Music and Theatre Studies from Yale University, where he served as the musical director for The Duke’s Men of Yale and the Yale Whiffenpoofs. Two of his full-length musicals have been produced by the Yale Drama Coalition, and he is currently writing music/lyrics for two new works at The Yale School of Drama. When not teaching at Dalton, he can often be found playing piano for groups such as The Story Pirates, The Young People’s Chorus of NYC, Vocal Ease, and The Saint Ann’s School Theatre Department, or music directing/performing in shows around the city. Solon has worked on music for the concert hall, television, stage, short film, and video games, and loves avocados. He can’t wait to continue making music with his amazing Dalton students this semester!

Dorota Szczepankowski

Dorota is Assistant Director of FP After School and Head Teacher for Kids Club. She is the daily instructor for Fun House. Dorota formerly taught in Poland and now teaches in New York City. She has worked in the Dalton After School Program for many years, providing K-3 students with nurturing and experienced supervision, while offering a range of fun and challenging activities for those signed up for ASP’s extended day. She also formerly supervised the High School Community Service students who joined us for our Homework Corner, GoodSport, and Kid Companion programs after school.

Teagan Taylor

Teagan is a singer, trumpeter, songwriter, performer, recording artist, and educator originally from San Diego, CA. She relocated to Brooklyn a little over three years ago to pursue her artistry, after years of honing her skills in her own band, The Teagan Taylor Band, on the West coast. Four albums later, she knew the time was right to make the move to the Big Apple. Since moving here, she has pursued her original projects (Adequate Fur, Kleptokrat), has emerged in the wedding band scene (Hank Lane), and has had opportunities to record with some incredible artists (Amy Irving, Goolis, Man Made Hills) at some of the best studios NYC has to offer (Flux Studios, Salant Sound, Mozart Street Studios). In addition to her musical career, Teagan also has many years working in special education in California as well as in NYC for the Department of Education. Working with children with a wide range of special needs and disabilities, she learned the importance of arts and music in schools and that it benefits children in the classroom and beyond. She hopes to encourage children to pursue their dreams and to be fearless creators of music and art!

Anatoly Trubman

Anatoly is a chess master and former national scholastic champion with vast tournament experience. He has coached many national championship teams at schools such as Hunter and PS 116.
