JUNE-OCT FREE & BENEFIT 2021 PERFORMANCES SUMMERSTAGE.ORG SUMMERSTAGE NYCSUMMERSTAGE SUMMERSTAGENYC SUMMERSTAGE IS BACK More than a year after the first lockdown order, SummerStage is back, ready to once again use our city’s parks as gathering spaces to bring diverse and thriving communities together to find common ground through world-class arts and culture. We are committed to presenting a festival fully representing the city we serve - a roster of diverse artists, focused on gender equity and presenting distinct New York genres. This year, more than ever before, our festival will focus on renewal and resilience, reflective of our city and its continued evolution, featuring artists that are NYC-born, based, or inextricably linked to the city itself. Performers like SummerStage veteran Patti Smith, an icon of the city’s resilient rebelliousness, Brooklyn’s Antibalas, who have married afrobeat with New York City’s Latin soul, and hip hop duo Armand Hammer, two of today’s most important leaders of New York’s rap underground. And, as a perfect symbol of rebirth, Sun Ra’s Arkestra returns to our stage in this year of reopening, 35 years after they performed our very first concert, bringing their ethereal afro-futurist cosmic jazz vibes back to remind us of our ongoing mission and purpose. Our festival art this year also reflects our outlook -- bold, bright, powerful -- and was created by New Yorker Lyne Lucien, an award-winning Haitian artist based in Brooklyn. Lucien is an American Illustration Award Winner and a finalist for the Artbridge - Not a Monolith Residency. She has worked as a photo editor and art director at various publications including New York Magazine, The Daily Beast and Architectural Digest.

Together we will listen to, perform, and arrange music from the works of Fela Kuti (Nigeria), Salif Keita (Mali), Hugh Masekela, Abdullah Ibrahim, Miriam Makeba (South Africa), Mulatu Astatke (Ethiopia), and the Gangbe Brass Band of Benin. Instrumentation will vary based on personnel each semester, and will typically include a rhythm section, horn section, and vocal soloists. The ensemble will also draw on the participation of faculty performers, as well as guest artists specializing in African popular music from the community and beyond. These collaborations will contribute to the diversity of musical and cultural experiences related to Africa that are available to students throughout the semester. Course Objectives The African Popular Music Ensemble is dedicated to learning African culture through musical performance. After completion of this course, students will be able to perform in a variety of African popular music styles on their instrument. These skills will be developed through a combination of listening to recordings, developing skills in listening and blending within the ensemble, and individual study and practice outside of rehearsals. BCCF E-MAIL BULLETIN #266 Your editor welcomes any and all submissions - news of upcoming events, tournament reports, and anything else that might be of interest to B.C. players. Thanks to all who contributed to this issue. To subscribe, send me an e-mail ([email protected]) or sign up via the BCCF webpage (www.chess.bc.ca); if you no longer wish to receive this Bulletin, just let me know. Stephen Wright HERE AND THERE NAYCC (August 14-18) The Canadian Youth Chess Championships are not only a qualifier for the world championships, they are also the means by which Canadian representatives are determined for regional and continental events. One of these, the North American Youth Chess Championship, is this year being held in Toronto beginning next Wednesday. The competition has been lengthened to nine rounds, which allows the awarding of FIDE titles to section winners. Presumably this is part of the reason the event has a record number of players preregistered, including a number from B.C. See the tournament website for details, also for pairings and results. U.S. Open (July 27 – August 4) Last year’s U.S. Open was held in Vancouver, WA, and not surprisingly attracted a large number of B.C. participants. This year three players from this province made the trek to Madison, Wisconsin, host city for the 114th event: Doug Sly, Juni Caluza, and Jofrel Landingin. They scored 3.5, 4.0, and 4.5 points respectively in the 519 player, one section tournament. Overall winners were GMs Julio Sadorra and Joshua Friedel and IM Mackenzie Molner on 8.0/9, with Friedel taking the US Open title.

Not only does this 10 piece outfit include members of Dojo Cuts among its division, but for their first full-length they also call on the vocal talents of guests such as Jojo Kuo (Fela Kuti / Daktaris / Antibalas), Roxie Ray (Dojo Cuts / Underbelly) and Ghanian-born Afro Moses. The result is an incredible set of new afrobeat tunes and funky jazz-dance grooves proving the masterful musicianship of this band. The self-titled debut effort by The Liberators is a solid example of the type of new afro-inspired funk that is riva- ling the greatness of classics from 70s Africa.
