(December 2005) Cloyd Allen Smith Jr., B.A., Slippery Rock University Chair: Dr. Joseph Dawson The Battle of Sailor’s Creek, 6 April 1865, has been overshadowed by Lee’s surrender at Appomattox Court House several days later, yet it is an example of the Union military war machine reaching its apex of war making ability during the Civil War. Through Ulysses S. Grant’s leadership and that of his subordinates, the Union armies, specifically that of the Army of the Potomac, had been transformed into a highly motivated, organized and responsive tool of war, led by confident leaders who understood their commander’s intent and were able to execute on that intent with audacious initiative in the absence of further orders. After Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia escaped from Petersburg and Richmond on 2 April 1865, Grant’s forces chased after Lee’s forces with the intent of destroying the mighty and once feared iv protector of the Confederate States in the hopes of bringing a swift end to the long war. -

Nursing in the Military The profession of alleviating the suffering of wounded and dying soldiers is as old as warfare itself. Our modern definition of nursing however started with Florence Nightingale on October 21, 1854 during the Crimean War when Nightingale together with she and a contingent of 38 volunteer women were dispatched to Turkey to the aid of wounded British soldiers. Nightingale¶s work later inspired nurses in the American Civil War, during which time, more than 5,000 women served as nurses on the battlefronts. With their contribution, they and their service helped to pave the way for women in professional medicine after the war. The history of women in the military began with the U.S. Army Nurse Corps in 1901. Duty Military nurses perform all the duties of a traditional nurse both during but are times of war and peace. They are also usually entrusted with a wider range of responsibilities than nurses in a civilian environment. In fact, a military nurse can be classified as active duty, reserve, or hired as a civilian employee. The tour of duty for an active or reserve nurse serving in the military requires a long-term commitment. It is common for military nurses to be sent abroad or into service at a combat hospital. Conversely, for civilian employees, the length of time depends on the contract. Ideally, active and reserve duty nurses in the military require experience in critical care, operating room, and trauma. Most are registered nurses with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree and enter into service as officers. -

Hd.Qrs 2nd Division April 10th ‘65 Dear Father I have so much to write about that I can scarcely tell where to begin. From 12m until 2 P.M. yesterday we lay in the road doubtful as to whether the finishing touch to the Rebellion had yet to be laid on or whether Lee would surrender the troops still under his command without further bloodshed. When it was announced that the papers had been signed & that the Army of Northern Virginia had surrendered the troops became perfectly wild. Hats, haversacks, canteens, everything that the men could lay hands upon were thrown in the air, and such a shout was raised as was never heard in this army before. We now lay quiet, with the captured army immediately in our front. Stragglers from both sides visit the lines of the others & the best of feeling prevails. The terms are not precisely known & but little thought is wasted upon them, we are feeling perfect confidence in Grant’s good judgment.1 The work of the last fortnight has been very hard and men & animals have at times been nearly exhausted. Now however all feel fresh & strong. I was never better in my life. Had not had a bad feeling the whole campaign. My horses both stood me comfortably. My man refused $350 for my mare & says that he must get $600 before he sells her. Seward is all right. -

Between 2001 and 2014, British military nurses served in Afghanistan caring for both Service personnel and local nationals of all ages. However, there have been few research studies assessing the psychological impact of delivering nursing care in a War Zone hospital. Purpose. To explore the challenges and psychological stressors facing military nurses in undertaking their operational role. Method. A Constructivist Grounded Theory was utilised. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 18 British Armed Forces nurses at Camp Bastion Hospital, Afghanistan, in June – July 2013. Discussion. Military nurses faced prolonged periods of caring for seriously injured poly trauma casualties of all ages, and there were associated distressing psychological effects and prolonged periods of adjustment on returning home. Caring for children was a particular concern. The factors that caused stress, both on deployment and returning home, along with measures to address these issues such as time for rest and exercise, can change rapidly in response to the dynamic flux in clinical intensity common within the deployable environment. Conclusion. Clinical training, a good command structure, the requirement for rest, recuperation, exercise and diet were important in reducing psychological stress within a War Zone. -
