2YO SALES SEASON KICKS OFF IN OCALA THE TDN DERBY TOP 12 by Brian DiDonato OCALA, FL--The 2-year-old sales season begins Tuesday with the two-day Ocala Breeders= Sales Company=s March sale at the newly renovated and reconfigured OBS complex. The road map for doing this, according to the TIF, is rooted in four planks: 1) Provide free, raw data feeds for registered, non-commercial users. 2) Provide free, basic past performances on all North American tracks. 3) Provide responsive channels to regularly address errors and omissions in the data. 4) Partner with universities to study racing data, developing new and advanced metrics for the betterment of the sport. Reached via phone Monday afternoon, Jason Wilson, the president and chief operating officer for Equibase, declined the opportunity to comment on the TIF=s white paper. ANot today. I really haven=t had a chance to digest what they had to say,@ he said. An Equibase staffer did subsequently email a statement attributed to Wilson, which read, in part, AEquibase=s mission at its inception was threefold, and it has not changed. First and foremost, the goal of Equibase was to become the primary source for all racing statistics for the Thoroughbred industry in North America. Second, and in furtherance of that, Equibase would collect, collate, process, store, and disseminate racing information. The third part of Equibase=s mission was to market that information to the Thoroughbred industry and the general public, with a commitment to improve the entire Thoroughbred industry. That mission is being accomplished. AOver the past decade, Equibase has made each data element it collects available for free on its website and has created tools to view and filter the data to foster fan engagement,@ the statement continued. PEDIGREE INSIGHTS: DREAM CASTLE TWIN FRENCH STUDS WITH by Andrew Caulfield BIG CHELTENHAM CHANCES Every time I see a winner from Frankel's first crop, I can't help thinking back to late-November 2014, when four foals from this crop were scheduled to sell at Tattersalls. Such was the interest in the equine superstar that the BBC sent a camera crew to report on all the excitement. The reality was that, instead of fireworks, we got a damp squib. Two of the three colts were bought back by their vendors, and I believe the third was withdrawn largely because of a lack of interest from would-be buyers. That left a filly who sold for 150,000gns, providing a scant profit on Frankel's ,125,000 fee. Needless to say, it has been onwards and upwards for Frankel's first crop ever since, to the extent that it has developed into a crop of which any stallion would be intensely proud. Even that largely-unwanted quartet from the foal sales has played its part.
