ST JOHN’S CATHEDRAL

HONG KONG

31ST AUGUST 2014 THE ELEVENTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY

‘The secret of the Christian is not that he is always in the right and puts other people in the right, but that he is a forgiven man. In the final crisis all that Peter could say was “I am sorry,” and Christ made him the rock of the Church.’

Archbishop Michael Ramsey–The Gospel & the Catholic Church

The Collect, Post Communion Prayer, Readings and Music for the 8.00am, 9.00am, 11.45am and 6.00pm services

The Collect for The Eleventh Sunday after Trinity O God, you declare your almighty power most chiefly in showing mercy and pity: mercifully grant to us such a measure of your grace, that we, running the way of your commandments, may receive your gracious promises, and be made partakers of your heavenly treasure; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

Post Communion for The Eleventh Sunday after Trinity Lord of all mercy, we your faithful people have celebrated that one true sacrifice which takes away our sins and brings pardon and peace: by our communion keep us firm on the foundation of the gospel and preserve us from all sin; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

First Reading: Jeremiah 15.15-21 O LORD, you know; remember me and visit me, and bring down retribution for me on my persecutors. In your forbearance do not take me away; know that on your account I suffer insult. Your words were found, and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart; for I am called by your name, O LORD, God of hosts. I did not sit in the company of merrymakers, nor did I rejoice; under the weight of your hand I sat alone, for you had filled me with indignation. Why is my pain unceasing, my wound incurable, refusing to be healed? Truly, you are to me like a deceitful brook,

like waters that fail. Therefore, thus says the LORD: If you turn back, I will take you back, and you shall stand before me. If you utter what is precious, and not what is worthless, you shall serve as my mouth. It is they who will turn to you, not you who will turn to them. And I will make you to this people a fortified wall of bronze; they will fight against you, but they shall not prevail over you, for I am with you to save you and deliver you, says the LORD. I will deliver you out of the hand of the wicked, and redeem you from the grasp of the ruthless.

This is the Word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God.

4

Psalm 26.1-8 1. Be thou my Judge, O Lord, for I have walked innocently * my trust hath been also in the Lord, therefore shall I not fall. 2. Examine me, O Lord, and prove me * try out my reins and my heart. 3. For thy loving-kindness is ever before mine eyes * and I will walk in thy truth. 4. I have not dwelt with vain persons * neither will I have fellowship with the deceitful. 5. I have hated the congregation of the wicked * and will not sit among the ungodly. 6. I will wash my hands in innocency, O Lord * and so will I go to thine altar; 7. That I may shew the voice of thanksgiving *and tell of all thy wondrous works. 8. Lord, I have loved the habitation of thy house * and the place where thine honour dwelleth. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son * and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be * world without end. Amen.

Second Reading: Romans 12.9-end Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honour. Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are. Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all. If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave room for the wrath of God; for it is written, ‘Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.’ No, ‘if your enemies are hungry, feed them; if they are thirsty, give them something to drink; for by doing this you will heap burning coals on their heads.’ Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

This is the Word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God.

Gospel Reading: Matthew 16.21-end From that time on, Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and undergo great suffering at the hands of the elders and chief and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, ‘God forbid it, Lord! This must never happen to you.’ But he turned and said to Peter, ‘Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling-block to me; for you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things.’ Then Jesus told his disciples, ‘If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit them if they gain the whole world but forfeit their life? Or what will they give in return for their life? For the Son of Man is to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay everyone for what has been done. Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.’

This is the Gospel of the Lord. All Praise to you, O Christ. 5

Anthem (9.00am) Salvator mundi (John Blow)

Salvator mundi, salva nos, qui per crucem et sanguinem redemisti nos, auxiliare nobis, te deprecamur, Deus noster.

O Saviour of the world, save us, who by thy cross and blood hast redeemed us, help us, we pray thee, O Lord our God.

TODAY AT ALL SERVICES St John’s Cathedral Emergency Appeal for The Al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza

The Diocese of Jerusalem has launched an urgent appeal for the Al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza to continue its crucial health services to those injured and impacted by the recent conflict. The Anglican-run hospital has announced that since the start of the fighting, it has dealt with 4,300 cases, of which more than 35 per cent involved physical wounds. The surgical team has been dealing "mostly with explosion injuries and traumas, including: abdominal injuries, bone injuries, chest injuries, soft-tissue injuries, and different types of burns". The hospital said that about half the burn cases were children. Al-Ahli Hospital has also been receiving, on average, about 150 patients, mostly children, affected by inadequate hygiene, resulting from the large piles of uncollected rubbish, and a shortage of food and water. The needs of the hospital include fuel to run generators, medical supplies, food, and linen. The impact of the airstrikes has caused structural damage to the hospital, including its ventilation system in the operating theatre and the emergency room. In addition, windows have been broken in many buildings, as well as in the new diagnostic centre.

DURING THE RECENT HOSTILITIES AND THE POST-WAR REHABILITATION PERIOD AL-AHLI HOSPITAL URGENTLY NEEDS HK$6 MILLION.

TODAY’S TARGET IS HK$40,000

Please place your donation in the ENVELOPE provided in the GREEN Pew Bulletin. Please give generously to make a difference.

PRAYING TOGETHER FOR PEACE AND RECONCILIATION

As part of our ongoing commitment to pray for peace and reconciliation in the world we invite you to join us for a Service for Peace & Reconciliation at St John’s. The service will take place on Monday 8th September at 1.00pm in the nave of the cathedral. This service will be an opportunity to gather and reflect upon what peacemaking might mean for us as Christians and will provide an opportunity for us to pray together for peace and reconciliation in our troubled world and particularly here in Hong Kong SAR. Please do make time to join us.

LIGHT A CANDLE FOR HONG KONG

Over the next few weeks if you come into the cathedral during the week you will notice that our votive stands from the St Michael’s Chapel have been moved into the nave of the cathedral. This is to provide a focal point for visitors and pilgrims to light a candle and pray for peace and harmony in Hong Kong SAR. St John’s Cathedral has for over 165 years been a quiet oasis of prayer and reflection in busy Central. We hope that the cathedral will continue to be a safe welcoming place for people of all views and that many will feel drawn to this holy space to pray for our city in these tense and searching times. All are welcome in their Father’s house!

You may like to use this prayer, written by one of our cathedral clergy, in your daily prayers.

Lord God, we ask for your blessing on the people of the Hong Kong SAR: at this time of divided opinions strengthen those who work for mutual understanding; make our hearts open to hear and embrace those who hold different views from ourselves; and may our leaders work together to seek the common good. We pray in the name of one who spread healing and reconciliation among all people, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

‘Fresh Expressions’ service

Do you have a favourite hymn? Singing hymns is such an important aspect in our Christian lives. Many hymns have touched our lives by bringing comfort in times of need and lifting our thanksgiving in moments of joy.

On Sunday, 14th September, at 6.00pm, the ‘Fresh Expressions’ Service at St John’s Cathedral will be ‘Songs of Praise’. In this special service, we will sing many all-time favourite hymns with background explanation included. Few parishioners will also share how some of these hymns have nurtured and encouraged them in their lives.

Due to time constraint, we will only be able to sing 8 hymns in this special service. Please help us to select the top 8 favourite hymns by voting at the back of the Cathedral.

Please join us on Sunday, 14th September at 6.00pm, ‘Songs of Praise’ Worship.

Weekday Eucharists at St John’s

‘Seven whole days, not one in seven, I will praise thee.’ -George Herbert (1593-1632), 'King of Glory, King of peace' (New English Hymnal 391)

The Weekday Eucharists are an opportunity for quiet reflection and prayer to start or conclude the day, perhaps before going to work, or just as part of your day. Why not make one of these services part of your weekly devotions? During the warmer months our weekday services are as follows:

Monday & Tuesday at 8.00am (Quiet Chapel) Wednesday at 8.00am (Quiet Chapel) & 6.00pm (High Altar) Thursday at 8.30am & 1.15pm (High Altar) Friday at 8.00am (Quiet Chapel) Saturday at 8.30am (Nave) & 12.30pm (High Altar)

On major holy days there is usually a Sung Eucharist at 7.30pm in addition to the normal services.

As Anglicans the Eucharist is at the centre of our lives. It is through these quiet weekday celebrations, which last for around half an hour, that we enter more deeply into the mystery of Christ's death and resurrection.

Everyone is welcome at these weekday services - just come along join us.
