    Wilderness House Literary Review 9/4 Pam Rosenblatt War from the Victims’ Perspective: Photographs by Jean Mohr One rainy Wednesday, October 1, 2014 af- ternoon Wilderness House Literary Review’s art editor Pam Rosenblatt went to see the “War from the Victims’ Perspective” exhibition featuring photographs by Jean Mohr of Geneva, Switzerland at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University, Medford, Massachusetts that ran from Sunday, September 14, 2014 through Sunday, October 5, 2014. She met with two vital persons involved with this eye-opening exhibit: Andreas Rufer, Deputy Consul/Project Leader – Art & Culture for swiss- nex boston, and Taraneh Pettinato, International Media Relations Specialist for the Office of Com- munications, Public Relations, and Marketing at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, Medford, Massachusetts. After a short interview with Rufer and Pettinato, Rosenblatt viewed and took photos of the photographs displayed on the walls of The Fletcher School’s art gallery. The following review is a by-product of this interview at The Fletcher School of Tufts University: Although some people view war as a positive means for economic growth, the average person does not enjoy war. People get hurt; people die; people lose homes; people become dispersed; people catch terrible diseases. It is true that people in the mili- tary may become heroes through winning a battle or two or through injuries received via military fighting. But sometimes the unsung heroes are those people who watch the fight- ing on the sidelines – the people who battle for their lives every day a gun is shot or a bomb explodes near where their former homes or schools or hospitals once existed.

The World Health Organization believed that educating people, as well as informing them about the health situation around the world, could assist in the enduring fight against disease. Yet in an increas- ingly competitive media landscape, the agency recognized the need to persuade people and hold their attention through attractive presentation. Public information, the name given to the multiple strategies used to communicate with the public, was rarely straightforward and required the agency not only to monitor the impact of its own efforts but also to identify opportunities to further enhance its reputation, especially when this was in danger of damage or misappropriation. The WHO’s understanding of public information provides insights into the development of international information, communication, and education networks and prac- tices after 1945, as well as the increasingly central position of these processes in generating support for and evincing the value of international organizations.

Following Jean Mohr and John Berger‘s model in Another Way of Telling, I create a narrative for the pictures with a discussion of historical information, current data from interviews, Tribal members‘ stories, and my own personal story as it is tethered to the tribe. The research addresses the following questions: Can photography offer a technological means to communicate culture in a vital, organic way? Can photos communicate culture as identity and not something merely to identify with? Can this cultural identification include me, an outsider, and is it possible that a colonialist viewpoint is actually beneficial to the tribe? John Berger, Roland Barthes, and Gregory Ulmer‘s theories allow opportunity for new perspectives, and even would-be answers at times. Admittedly, there is no frame large enough to hold all of the truth, but these theorists‘ works push the frame‘s boundaries to look at the pictures from other perspectives, other as both different and from the outside.

    Press Release To celebrate 75 years of Irish-Swiss diplomatic relations and the 150th anniversary of the First Geneva Convention, the Embassy of Switzerland in Ireland is organising a series of events on Humanitarian Action to take place in the inspiring setting of the exhibition “War from the Victims’ Perspective - Photographs by Jean Mohr”, at the Gallery of Photography Ireland. Ireland and Switzerland share a common humanitarian tradition through their commitment to the respect for international hu- manitarian law and to the provision of aid to victims of armed conflicts. The Embassy of Switzerland has thus chosen to cele- brate this double-anniversary with a particular focus on the topic of humanitarian action. Exhibition Shown in Ireland for the first time, Swiss photographer Jean Mohr’s (b.1925) classic black-and-white photographs uphold the highest standards of humanist photography: they are compassion- ate, concerned, sensitive and respectful of the subject’s dignity. This major exhibition features sixty of Mohr’s images and address- es the issues of victims of conflicts, refugees and communities suffering from war and those still under threat. It focusses on emblematic cases from around the world illustrating the universal problems of populations directly or indirectly enduring the reper- cussions of war.     Representing Palestinian Dispossession: Land, Property and Photography in the Settler Colony Brenna Bhandar and Alberto Toscano Abstract This article explores the centrality of property and dispossession to the operations of settler-colonialism in Israel/Palestine through the prism of Edward Said and Jean Mohr’s collaborative photographic essay After the Last Sky. Drawing on the way in which Said directs our attention to the meanings of land, place and exile within Palestinian life and resistance, and putting his writing in dialogue with recent photographic projects that focus on Palestinian dispossession, the article brings these theoretical perspectives to bear on the present reality of the dispossession of Palestinian Bedouin in the Naqab village of Al-Araqib. Introduction Property and dispossession should sit squarely at the centre of any critical understanding of the on-going reality of settler-colonialism. This relates not just to the way in which settler-colonialism is to be understood as a crucial variant of the accumulation by dispossession that has accompanied the history of capitalism,1 but also in terms of the less visible life-worlds and ideologies of ownership and dispossession that subtend the everyday life of the settler colony and resistance to it. As Frantz Fanon and others have taught us, the very categories of settler and native are forged in the colonial context through the prism of property ownership and related conceptions of propriety and the proper.2 This article returns to Edward Said’s landmark collaboration
