Cistus is one of the most characteristic genera of the Mediterranean flora. These species, natives of lands surrounding the Mediterranean Sea, are present in scrubland and garigue on siliceous ground and often on acid soil; seven species in particular are founded in Sicily. The adaptation of the genus to Mediterranean environments is evident from ecological characteristics such as fire- dependent seed germination; the heat generated by fire is in fact a key germination input. In this view, two experiments were performed to study the effects of high temperature on germination of four Cistus species (C. creti- cus L., C. crispus L., C. monspeliensis L., C. salviifolius L.). In the first, in relation to untreated control, 7 different high temperature pre-treatments (from 70°C to 130°C) for different timings (from 1 to 10 minutes) were analysed in relation to two sowing strategies (soon after the seed collection and after a 6 month period at 5°C to simulate the winter season effects). The pre-treatment with high temperatures can improve the germination; the storage at 5°C to simulate the winter season effects did not modify the germination process. In any case the results showed a species-dependent response. -

Available Online: 01st April, 2016 ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate antimicrobial and antifungal activities of crude extracts from leaves and flower of Halimium halimifolium, and compared with those of Cistus salviifolius and Cistus monspeliensis. The tested plants (leaves and flowers) were extracted with ethanol, the activities were screened against three Gram-positive (Listeria monocytogenes, Bacillus subtilis and staphylococcus aureus), three Gram-negative bacteria (Salmonella enteric, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli), and two pathogenic fungi (Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger). The efficacy of these extracts was tested against those microorganisms through a disc-diffusion method employing 15 휇L of each sample per paper discs (6 mm in diameter). Comparable results were carried out using Gentamicin and Amphotericin as standard antibiotics. Ethanol extracts of different parts of plant exhibited good activity against all microorganisms tested. -

The genus Pleurotus is a cosmopolitan group of mushrooms with high nutritional value and therapeutic properties, besides a wide array of biotechnological and environmental applications. Scope and approach: The present report aims to provide a critical review on aspects related to chemical compounds isolated from the genus Pleurotus with possible biotechnological, nutritional and therapeutic uses. Investigations on the genus have immensely accelerated during the last ten years, so that only reports published after 2005 have been considered. Key findings and conclusions: The most important Pleurotus species cultivated in large scale are P. ostreatus and P. pulmonarius. However, more than 200 species have already been investigated to various degrees. Both basidiomata and mycelia of Pleurotus are a great renewable and easily accessible source of functional foods/nutraceuticals and pharmaceuticals with antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti- inflammatory, antitumor and immunomodulatory effects. -

Accepted 23 June, 2011 In search for alternative ways of tomatoes’ bacterial canker control, we screened here forty medicinal and aromatic plants (MAP) sampled from 15 families, currently used in southern Moroccan traditional medicine, for their activity against Clavibacter michiganensis subsp . michiganensis the causal agent of this disease. The antibacterial efficacy of powders of these plants was determined in vitro using the agar plate’s methods. Results obtained show that all the forty plants tested inhibited the bacterial growth of this pathogen with inhibition zone diameter ranging from 5 to 50 mm. Determination of the minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) and the minimal bactericidal concentrations (MBC) of the most effective plants indicates that there plants gender Rubus, Anvillea and Pistacia have the lower MIC which is equal to 3,125 mg ml -1. The other plants ( Lavandula coronopifolia, Lavandula stoechas, Rosa canina, Cistus monspliensis and Cistus crispus ) had a MIC equal to 6.25 mg ml -1. The MBC for different plants tested are between 6.25 mg ml -1, case of Rubus ulmifolius and 25 mg ml -1. -

Host Specificity in the Parasitic Plant Cytinus Hypocistis

Wiens Host specificity in the parasitic plant Cytinus hypocistis was quantified at four sites in the Algarve region of Portugal from 2002 to 2007. The parasite was found to be locally host specific, and only two hosts were consistently infected: Halimium halimifolium and Cistus monspeliensis. C. hypocistis did not infect hosts in proportion to their abundance; at three sites, 100% of parasites occurred on H. halimifolium which represented just 42.4%, 3% and 19.7% of potential hosts available, respectively. At the remaining site, where H. halimifolium was absent, 100% of parasites occurred on C. monspeliensis which represented 81.1% of potential hosts available. Other species of potential host were consistently uninfected irrespective of their abundance. Ecological niche divergence of host plants H. halimifolium and C. monspeliensis may isolate host-specific races of C. hypocistis, thereby potentially driving al- lopatric divergence in this parasitic plant. Prescribed fire is a common tool in the maintenance of natural landscapes and of high diversity within some plant communities, but its role in lichen communities is little studied. A prescribed fire at Archbold Biological Station on the southern end of the Lake Wales Ridge impacted three separate populations of C. perforata in July 1993, leaving only rem- nant unburned patches scattered among completely burned areas. This study was undertaken to investigate the rate and mode of post-fire recovery of C. perforata in comparison with co-occurring lichens.Detailed GPS maps of individual patches of this lichen were made in January 1997 and com- pared with those made in August 1999. In addition, abundance of all lichen species was monitored yearly during the winters of 1997–1999. Although all of the other terrestrial species in the same habitat recovered from juvenile stages, no juvenile forms of C. perforata were recorded. The area occupied by C. perforata increased by more than 200% , on average, over the three sites. However, population growth (for all species) has so far been too slow to be documented and has not changed markedly over this period.Therefore, dispersal of unburned C. -

On the basis of personal observations, herbarium specimens and, data reported in the literature the authors report morphological, ecological and distributive data on Pleurotus taxa from Italy. New descriptions are here provided based on the most distinctive-discriminating eco-morphological characters of twelve Pleurotus taxa. Key words: oyster mushrooms, descriptions, ecology, distribution. Introduction In modern taxonomy the genus Pleurotus (Fr.) P. Kumm is placed under the family Pleurotaceae Kühner (Agaricales, Basidiomycota). The Pleurotaceae are a family of small to medium-sized mushrooms which have white spores including 6 genera and 94 species (Kirk & al. 2008). The genus Pleurotus is a cosmopolitan group of fungi which comprises ca. 30 species and subspecific taxa also known as oyster mushrooms. The genus Pleurotus also represents the second main group of cultivated edible mushrooms in the world (Zervakis & Labarère 1992). The Pleurotus species are efficient colonizers and bioconverters of lignocellulosic agro-industrial residues into palatable human food with medicinal properties (Philippoussis 2009). Some white-rot fungi of the genus Pleurotus are able to remove lignin with only minor attack on cellulose (Cohen & al. 2002). Besides Pleurotus species demonstrates significant nutritional values (La Guardia & al. 2005; Venturella & al. 2015a) and their bioactive compounds (mainly polysaccharides) possess antibacterial (Schillaci & al.
