he American middle class is under attack. Anti-labor politi- Tcians are pushing legislation to curb, or entirely eliminate, collective bargaining rights for working women and men. This attack on workers ignores one simple fact: Unions are a major force in building and sustaining the American middle class. After the Great Depression, as union membership grew, real family incomes doubled. As workers’ pro- ductivity increased, wages increased proportionately. However, union membership began to decline in the late 1970s. In 1981, when President Ronald Reagan fired the air traffic controllers who were striking for bet- ter wages and working conditions, Corporate America was handed a carte blanche to union bust. This resulting shift in government policies snowballed into the all-out attack on workers’ rights and erosion of the middle class that we are up against today. Organized labor has an essential role in our economy: to provide the checks and balances that maintain fairness, equality, social justice, dignity and respect for the rights of workers, including the right to freely choose union representation.
