THE FABRICATED PONTUS NARRATIVE AND HATE SPEECH Teoman Ertuğrul TULUN Ph.D. Candidate Department of Political Science and Public Administration Bilkent University Abstract: This article aims to examine the genocide story invented during the late 1980’s and 90’s called the “Pontic Greek Genocide” by way of referring both to the Greek academic sources and Pontic Greek allegations. This article also examines this invented story by referring to the Turkish evaluation of the “Pontus question” before, during, and after the World War I with a special emphasis on the period corresponding to the establishment of the Republic of Turkey. In this general framework, this article reviews the ethnic background of the 165 Pontic Greeks, the fragmentation of the Byzantine Empire and its successor states, the conquest of the Greek Trebizond Empire by the Ottoman Empire, Pontus Greek narratives and claims concerning the World War I developments, Pontic Greek activities and efforts to establish a Pontian state during World War I, and the invented story of genocide. It also elaborates the elements of the hate speech developed against Turks on the basis of the fabricated “Pontic Greek Genocide”. DOI 10.1515/bz-2019-0007 BZ 2019; 112(3): 899–934 Scott Kennedy Michael Panaretos in context A historiographical study of the chronicle On the emperors of Trebizond Abstract: It has often been said it would be impossible to write the history of the empire of Trebizond (1204–1461) without the terse and often frustratingly la- conic chronicle of the Grand Komnenoi by the protonotarios of Alexios III (1349–1390), Michael Panaretos. While recent scholarship has infinitely en- hanced our knowledge of the world in which Panaretos lived, it has been approx- imately seventy years since a scholar dedicated a historiographical study to the text. This study examines the world that Panaretos wanted posterity to see, ex- amining how his post as imperial secretary and his use of sources shaped his representation of reality, whether that reality was Trebizond’s experience of for- eigners, the reign of Alexios III, or a narrative that showed the superiority of Tre- bizond on the international stage. Finally by scrutinizing Panaretos in this way, this paper also illuminates how modern historians of Trebizond have been led astray by the chronicler, unaware of Panaretos selected material for inclusion for the narratives of his chronicle. S. Al-Zwainy Faculty of Engineering, Isra University, Amman, Jordan ABSTRACT This research paper gives a historic overview of the Palestnian architecture from the ancient times until today. The first chapter treats the ancient architecture. It introduces us to the first architectural findings on the territory of Palestine and the earliest Palestinian houses. We will see the differences of styles and buildings in prehistoric and ancient times from those built during Roma-Byzantine rule and later during ancient Greek-Roman influence. It is the time of the emergence and spread of Christianity, thus the period of building its temples - the churches. With the conquest of Palestine by the Arabs and islamization of the country the architecture suffers changes and is influenced by this new religion and new lifestile. Jerusalem becomes the beacon of islamic religion and culture. This period is the subject of the second chapter that gives us overview of the Palestinian architecture starting from Arabs installation in the 7th century and the crusaders wars, followed by the rule of Mamluk's dynasty. We finalize this period of influence in the Palestinian architecture with the rule of the Ottoman Empire. Despite the change of religions and cultures, churches and mosques are being constructed in each rule. -

Angela Ralli Over the last decades, documenting dialects and generally non-standard lan- guages has witnessed an increasing interest, especially when these linguistic systems face the threat of extinction. Th e publication of the book Morphological Aspects of Pontic Greek Spoken in Georgia is very timely, because it provides a rather detailed account of the morphology of a variety of the Pontic group, the idiosyncratic features of which have been relatively unknown. Taking into consideration the main existing proposals for both Greek and Pontic morphology, Berikashvili provides a thorough presentation of her ma- terial, and at the same time raises a lot of questions regarding the infl uence that the variety has received from the languages that has entered in contact with, mainly Turkish and Russian, and to a lesser extent Georgian and Standard Modern Greek. Although she does not off er any sound theoretical analyses of the data, she encourages the debate on several issues on Pontic morphology, particularly on those regarding infl ection, and shows that there are “several av- enues” for further developments in the study of contact morphology, if dialects are accounted for as a testing bed for validating theoretical proposals. International Conference Berlin, Germany 25/26 February 2016 Over the last years, the genocide committed against the Armenians has received more and more scientific and popular attention. Thanks to a growing number of international scientists devoted to the elucidation and reappraisal of the Armenian-Ottoman past the historical processes leading to the extinction of the majority of the Armenian population within the Ottoman Empire have been traced and investigated. However, as recent international research has emphasized, the Armenian genocide by the Young-Turkish government has to be understood as only one chapter of an overall campaign of the Young-Turkish and Kemalist government against the non-Muslim (and later non-Turkish) communities. Besides the Armenians, particularly Greek communities in Asia Minor were affected most in terms of forced migration and atrocities, committed in the interests of specific Young-Turkish and Kemalist visions of the Ottoman space between 1913 and 1923. In this regard, the governmental campaign reached its violent climax in the genocide of the Greek communities in the Pontic area at the shores of the Black Sea. Albeit the killing of the Pontic Greek has become increasingly prominent in Anglo-American historical research, it still continues to be a desideratum within the European field of research. -

Sağlık hizmeti veren kuruluşlar genel olarak bîmâristan ve dârüşşifâ olarak adlandırılmışlardı. Bîmâristan ve dârüşşifâ vakıfları padişahlar, saltanat üyeleri başta olmak üzere devlet adamları ile zenginler tarafından kurulmuşlardı. Osmanlı idaresindeki Trablusşam’da sağlık hizmet veren Bîmâristan, Memlûklar zamanında kurulmuş olup İzzi ve Bedrî isimleri ile anılmaktaydılar. Osmanlı Devleti, Trablus’u ele geçirdikten sonra İzzi ve Bedrî Bîmâristan vakıflarını kayıt altına alarak bunların varlığını korudu. Ancak 16. yüzyılın ikinci yarısında zamanla bu iki vakfın hizmetlerinin aksaması ve mali durumlarının kötüleşmesi neticesinde devlet bunları birleştirerek tek bir vakıf haline dönüştürdü. Bu düzenleme ile Trablusşam’daki Dârüşşifâ (Bîmâristan) Vakfı 19. yüzyılın sonuna kadar varlığını sürdürebildi. Bu çalışmada, Trablusşam Dârüşşifâ (Bîmâristan) Vakfı’nın 1845-1880 tarihleri arasında gelir ve giderlerinin tür ve sayıları ile vakıfta çalışan görevlilerinin unvan ve ücretleri hakkında bilgi verilmiştir. Yine bu araştırma neticesinde, Osmanlı Devleti’nin son dönemlerinde Trablusşam Dârüşşifâ (Bîmâristan) Vakfı’nın ekonomik yapısının analizi yapılarak, verdikleri hizmetlerde zaman içerisinde geçirmiş olduğu sosyal ve iktisadi değişimler ortaya çıkarılmıştır. Jackson School of International Studies ©Copyright 2021 Owen Harris University of Washington Abstract Hellenes and Arabs at Home and Abroad: Greek Orthodox Christians from Aleppo in Athens Owen Harris Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Kathie Friedman Jackson School of International Studies Abstract: In this thesis, I show how communities living together in relative equality in Aleppo, Syria, and fleeing the same conflict, experienced very different outcomes depending on which religious community they belonged to. Members of the Greek Orthodox Christian community from Aleppo who have moved to Athens reported that their new home is exactly the same as the community they left behind. Members of the Muslim community from Aleppo in Athens did not agree with this statement. Why do Greek Orthodox Christians fare so much better than their Muslim compatriots in Greece? I argue that this inequality is a result of opportunities and challenges created by policies instituted during the great unmixing of peoples in the early 20th century and the refugee crisis in the early 21st century. Greek Orthodox Christians are equal citizens in a secular Arab republic that values ecumenism and members of the Greek diaspora in a Hellenic republic that privileges Greek ethno-religious belonging. They are Arab Hellenes, equally Greek and Syrian. Drawing on data collected in interviews with members of the Greek Orthodox Syrian community in Greece, as well as Syrians of different faiths in other countries, I examine what went right for Greek Orthodox Syrians in Athens and suggest policy tools that government and civil society can use to create similar conditions for Muslim Syrians in Greece. -

Faculty of Law University of Toronto 2011 This dissertation concerns a crucial episode in the international legal history of nation-building: the Greek-Turkish population exchange. Supported by Athens and Ankara, and implemented largely by the League of Nations, the population exchange showcased the new pragmatism of the post-1919 order, an increased willingness to adapt legal doctrine to local conditions. It also exemplified a new mode of non-military nation-building, one initially designed for sovereign but politico-economically weak states on the semi-periphery of the international legal order. The chief aim here, I argue, was not to organize plebiscites, channel self-determination claims, or install protective mechanisms for vulnerable minorities Ŕ all familiar features of the Allied Powers‟ management of imperial disintegration in central and eastern Europe after the First World War. Nor was the objective to restructure a given economy and society from top to bottom, generating an entirely new legal order in the process; this had often been the case with colonialism in Asia and Africa, and would characterize much of the mandates system ii throughout the interwar years. Instead, the goal was to deploy a unique mechanism Ŕ not entirely in conformity with European practice, but also distinct from non-European governance regimes Ŕ to reshape the demographic composition of Greece and Turkey. -
Du Pont À La Macédoine : Les Grands Monastères Grecs Pontiques Marqueurs Territoriaux D'un Peuple En Diaspora

Paris, 2-4 octobre 1995 Du Pont à la Macédoine : les grands monastères grecs pontiques marqueurs territoriaux d'un peuple en diaspora Michel BRUNEAU TIDE-CNRS, Bordeaux Les Grecs pontiques constituent au sein de la nation grecque un peuple distinct caractérisé par une identité forte mais non antagonique par rapport à l'identité nationale grecque. A la différence des Crétois ou des Epirotes, par exemple, qui ont aussi leur propre identité ethno- régionale, ils ne vivent pas sur leur territoire d'origine situé en Turquie, mais en diaspora. Au nombre d'environ 800 000 en Grèce, ils se sont installés en Macédoine-Thrace dans des villages ainsi que dans quelques quartiers et banlieues des agglomérations d'Athènes et de Thessalonique. Trente ans après leur installation, qui date de l'échange des populations de 1922- 23, ils ont entrepris la construction en Macédoine de sanctuaires rappelant les grands monastères qui, dans le Pont, leur avaient permis de préserver leur religion, leur langue et leur identité pendant quatre siècles de domination turque. Ces monastères, aujourd'hui au nombre de quatre, sont devenus les points focaux de leur affirmation identitaire qui se manifeste à travers leur iconographie (au sens de J. Gottmann, 1966) tant sur les monuments eux-mêmes que dans les cérémonies et pèlerinages annuels. Avant d'étudier les raisons et les modalités de leur reconstruction en Grèce, il faut comprendre comment et pourquoi ces monastères ont joué dans le territoire d'origine, dans le Pont, un rôle central pour la préservation de cette identité grecque. Analysis of Documentation About Ottoman Heritage in Belgrade Via Digital Reconstruction of Sokollu Mehmed Pasha Caravanserai
Vladimir BOŽİNOVİĆ, Viktor POPOVİĆ* ANALYSIS OF DOCUMENTATION ABOUT OTTOMAN HERITAGE IN BELGRADE VIA DIGITAL RECONSTRUCTION OF SOKOLLU MEHMED PASHA CARAVANSERAI This city as wonderful as a diamond in a ring was founded by one of the Serbian kings, King Despot. It was the conquest goal for all kings wrote in 1660 Evliya Çelebi. Abstract In the period from 16th to the end of the 17th century Belgrade became one of the most important cities of Ottoman Empire in the Balkans. During this era of peace Sultans and Grand Viziers erected numerous waqf endowments, which formed an enviable economic, educational and religious center. Most important Belgrade waqf was certainly the waqf of Grand Vizier Sokollu Mehmet Pasha. It consisted out of several buildings with the most famous one being vizier`s caravanserai, probably the biggest architectural complex of Ottoman Belgrade. In the following centuries, the city was constantly changing power and turmoil that followed many savage bat- tles resulted in destruction of famous caravanserai and many other monuments of Ottoman Bel- grade. The only testimony of these glorious objects that we have today is partial documentation scattered throughout museums and archives in Serbia and abroad. Population Exchange and the Politics of Ethno-Religious Fear: the EU-Turkey Agreement on Syrian Refugees in Historical Perspective Gregory J. Abstract: In March of 2016 the EU and Turkey reached an agreement in which all refugees who reach Greece through unauthorized means would be returned to Turkey. The deal is the latest effort to ‘stem the tide’ of refugees who have fled the Middle East. Yet this is not the first time negotiations between Europe and Turkey have resulted in an agreement to exchange problematic populations. As part of the negotiations ending WWI, Turkey and Europe agreed to a transfer of populations in which Christians in Turkey would be sent to Greece in exchange for Greece’s small population of Muslims. This project draws upon historical research and contemporary policy analysis to compare the 2016 EU-Turkey Refugee Agreement and the 1923 Greco- Turkish population exchange. A comparative approach reveals the European response to this refugee crisis is not merely an echo of past sentiments, but the product of patterns of prejudice that have structured relationships between majority populations and religious minority and refugee populations in Europe and Turkey alike.
