Chairperson's Report

I trust that you have all enjoyed the sunny warm weather over the last four months and are bracing for the colder climate as winter approaches. The undoubted highlight for ACCC was the annual showpiece CNY Festival and Market Day on 2 February at ASB Showgrounds for which we were blessed by the presence of Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. This year's event was the most successful yet with a bumper crowd and great support from sponsors, stallholders, entertainers and volunteers. Another enjoyable social get together for our members was the Auckland Anniversary yum cha, and another members yum cha is has been scheduled for Sunday 15 September to celebrate the Moon Festival. On a sadder note, all New Zealanders were outraged by the violent and heartless massacre of the Muslim worshippers in Christchurch on 15 March. The ACCC Executive Committee voted unanimously to make a donation of $10,000 as a tangible expression of our deepest sympathies for the families of the victims of this tragedy. For our first investment, the purchase of a childcare centre at 168 Lincoln Road, Henderson was finalised on 5 April with settlement on 31 May for $3.05M at approx 6% return and long leases until 2033. The Committee are now actively seeking a second suitable investment. The children's Mandarin classes commenced in February with Peter Pan as Headmaster so all ACCC activities are now located at Māngere. As stated previously, our Māngere premises belong to you, the members of ACCC, and myself and the elected Executive Committee members and officers are only administrating the assets on your behalf. It is now an excellent facility of which we can be very proud and which can fully cater for the sporting, cultural and social needs of our ACCC members and also for the mainstream local community. Please look after the building and treat it with respect like it is your second home. The 2019 AGM is being held at Māngere on Sunday, 21 July at 2pm. This is an election year for the ACCC Officers and Committee Members, and to be eligible to be nominated for the ACCC Committee or vote, members need to be financial by the end of June. Payment of the annual subscription ($10 for individuals & $20 for families) can now be made by direct credit to our ACCC bank account 06-0101- 0300774-00 notated with your name and membership number where known. The new system of paper membership cards by email rather than laminated cards by post to reduce administration time and high postage costs is working very well. We strongly encourage any of our members who have a keen interest in organising activities in our expanded Māngere premises for the Chinese community in Auckland to make themselves available for nomination for election to the ACCC Executive Committee. Younger members of the community with new ideas and energy are especially welcome on the Committee to help set our future direction. Nomination can be made by 30 June on the form below. Other upcoming ACCC events are the 59th Anniversary Dinner being held at Lucky Fortune Restaurant in Three Kings on Saturday 8 June with tickets now available for $35 per person BYO; a family 10 pin bowling afternoon on Sunday 26 May; the 5th men's tournament on 6 -7 July; a fundraising dance on Saturday 3 August; a Moon Festival yum cha on Sunday 15 September; the National Day celebration on Sunday 29 September; a Children's Fun Day on Saturday 12 October; and the Guy Fawkes fireworks evening on Saturday, 2 November. The ASB Showgrounds have been booked for Saturday 18 January 2020 for our CNY celebration for the Year of the Rat. Please note these dates in your diary. Finally, I wish to express my sincere appreciation to the officers and members of the Executive Committee for the time and effort they have made in organising our many activities.

Best Regards Kai Luey Chairperson

2019 Chinese New Year Festival and Market Day by Kai Luey

The ACCC Chinese New Year Festival and Market Day held at ASB Showgrounds on Saturday 2 February 2019 was again a stunning success and undoubtedly the best we have held since moving the event to this central Epsom location in 2002. Over 20,000 attendees flowed through the gates to enjoy celebrating the Year of the Pig.

Planning for the big day began in May 2018 when John Kum, David Tai, and myself had a meeting with ASB Showgrounds management about changes in their policies for safety and parking. Thereafter, securing sponsorships and stallholders over the ensuring months took a lot of time and effort, followed by arranging publicity, entertainment and volunteers.

It was a tremendous honour to have Prime Minister Rt Hon Jacinda Ardern open our celebration as she comes to very few Chinese community events. Also in attendance were many other politicians and community leaders including Consul General Xu Erwen, Leader of the Opposition Simon Bridges and Auckland Mayor Phil Goff.

The official opening began with a triple lion dance by Peter Low's E- Pacs team. Then after the speeches, there was a great performance by the Jinan Acrobatic Troupe from China and a wonderful dance by the ACCC Youth Group to kick off the cultural concert. We wish to thank Multi-Media once again for donating the stage, lighting, and sound facilities.

In addition, we wish to acknowledge the valued support from our new co-hosts, TV 37 Panda TV, our many generous sponsors, stallholders, entertainers and volunteers in making the 2019 CNY Festival & Market Day another extremely successful occasion.

The ACCC volunteers were then invited to attend a fabulous show performed by the Jinan Acrobatic Troupe at the Vodafone Event Centre in Manukau on the following evening instead of the traditional thank you get together.

Auckland Anniversary Yum Char by Connie Kum

Auckland Chinese Community Centre celebrated the Chinese New Year with a heavily subsidised (cost to members $5) Yum Char for its Enduring and Financial Members. For non Enduring Members there was a flurry for Members to renew their Memberships and also attracted new Memberships.

Lucky Star Restaurant in Papatoetoe was booked to its maximum - 22 tables with 12 persons sitting at each table. Customers arrived just after 11am so they could mx and mingle - catching up with friends and rellies that they hadn’t seen for many a year.

The gentleman with the traditional Chinese beard (with no 17 on his heart) is brother Rollan Gin and is talking to cousin Jimmy Gin who he probably hasn’t seen for several years.

With the success of this event we will host another opportunity for community fellowship. The Committee is organising another Enduring and Financial Membership Yum Char to celebrate Autumn Moon Festival in September. Find details for this in notice above in newsletter.

Chinese Lantern Festival by Stan King The Auckland Chinese Community Centre once again supported the 2019 Chinese Lantern Festival organised by Auckland Council. The three day event was held at the Auckland Domain on the Friday weekend of the 15, 16, 17 February 2019, from 5 pm to 10 pm. Our stall was the Riddles Tent as in previous years, and free prizes were given to those who gave correct answers to riddles in the two separate Chinese and English sections. Our stall was very busy on the Saturday and Sunday, which had the biggest crowd attendance at the Domain. We also promoted our ACCC membership, Chinese School for children and Adult Mandarin and Cantonese classes. Our stall was one of eight stall holders promoting Chinese culture, in a large partitioned off marquee located in the area west of the lake area. As the tent, tables and chairs were provided by the city council, the setting up on the Friday morning and taking down on Sunday evening was managed easily by myself. I wish to thank the following ACCC members and their friends who volunteered their help in manning the stall over the three evenings. Joana Sang, Helen Scott, Nathan Chan, Linlee Tram, Kai Luey, Candy Lim, Danny Law, Morgan Xiao, Catherine Ming, Keith Wong, Alfred Li, Peter Pan, Michelle Pan, Julie Gordon, Connie Kum, John Kum, Julie Chen, Ellie Aitkenhead, Stan King. Without the volunteers help, our participation at the festival would not have been possible.

ACCC Sports Club Updates by Nathan Chan

Wow, this year is moving fast – I never know if that’s a good or a bad thing. As the season changes, some of our sports do as well. Many of our members will be looking forward to the new season of indoor turbo touch, and we will be hosting our 7th annual Triple Threat tournament in May. Meanwhile, basketball and indoor carry on as it does all year round. Congratulations to the ACCCSC Hornets for winning the Summer indoor netball season in the local Dominion Road competition. If you are interested in playing, get in touch with us! Here’s what else we have been up to in the first part of the year…

Auckland Anniversary Picnic As is customary, the Sunday of the first long weekend of the year is a chance for the Club to get together under the sun, on the beach, and out in the water. This year we returned to Long Bay Regional Park, and food and activities were enjoyed by all. Parents and children brought out their competitive side in the novelty races; numbers proved too strong as the under 30s defeated the over 30s in both the mens and womens tug of war competition; and though there were less entries, the standard of the sandcastle competition was high as usual.

Special thank you to the following people:

• Edmond Yee, Ron & Rosalind Chin, Sandra Young, and Linlee Tram for cooking the sausages and onions • Ng-Waishing Ltd. for the onions • IE Produce for the watermelons

Breakers Curtain Raiser On that same day, some of our junior basketballers (aged between 9-11yrs old) had a fantastic opportunity to play in the curtain raiser for the NZ Breakers at , as part of the Meadow Fresh Court of Dreams. As part of the experience we received over 100 tickets to the game and free Junior all round, as the Breakers scored over 90 points and brought home the win.

The kids loved the experience, playing in front of hundreds of people including their families. Below is a story from one of the kids:

“Hi, my name is Sean. On January the 27th 2019, I played a game of basketball before the New Zealand Breakers played their game. We arrived at Spark Arena at 1pm, our team all met up and we went into the stadium together. We met the lady who gave us all Breakers singlets and we actually got to keep them. Then we went through the tunnel into the stadium. We got to watch the Breakers warm up for a little bit before we played our game against the Knights, who had Hans and Seth who also play for ACCCSC. In the first half Josh, Zac, Meghan, Gemma and Trey started and they played awesome. Then I went on in the second half with Ausborne, Angela, Jessica and Matthew. I felt excited and nervous to play because the stadium was big and lots of people were watching. We all played hard and had lots of fun. After our game, we made a tunnel (for the Breakers to come out) and gave all the Breakers high-fives while they were running onto the court. I had so much fun I would definitely do it again.”

Waitangi Day Tennis Tournament On a beautiful Wednesday morning, 16 pairs of tennis players took the opportunity to spend their Waitangi Day at the newly renovated Windmill Courts in Mt. Eden. For some, it was a chance to shake the dust off that old racket; for others, it was a chance to borrow one and learn the rules. It was great to see some new faces and varying levels of tennis being enjoyed! The pool of death (aka the family pool) in particular ran behind schedule due to the number of close games.

Congratulations to our winners... Bowl: Calvin Chan & Jack Li def. Amanda Lowe & Joe Serrano Plate: Sandra & Jack Luen def. Jade Kwong & Richard Lee Competitive Mens: Brendon Fraser & Jason Tan def. Craig & Jono Tims Cup: Josh Young & Hinewai Hosford def. Grace & Scott Luen

Special mention to Ros Chin (and her partner Zane) and Mazin Ibrahim (and his partner Catherine Young) for having to retire early, and David Lu for providing the much needed ice blocks!

Beach Turbo Touch Eager to make the most of the final weeks of summer, we fielded two teams for the annual Beach Turbo Touch Tournament at Mairangi Bay – ACCCSC Won and ACCCSC Ton. What started as a wet and grey morning quickly turned into a sunny scorcher, with both teams bringing the heat in the group stages and progressing to the ‘Final Four’.

With ACCCSC Won just barely missing out, it was down to ACCCSC Ton to represent the club in the Grand Final. Fired up from their loss to the other finalists during the group stages, ACCCSC Ton put on a clinical display to come out on top as tournament winners – adding to their title from the Mission Bay Tournament in 2018.

Jonathan Sng, in inspired form throughout the competition, was named Tournament Male MVP. Thanks to all players for a great day on the sand and look forward to seeing everyone during the regular turbo season!

ACCC Dancing School Notice by Cecil Wong and Geoffrey Lim

Last year on 31 December 2018 just under 300 dancers attended our New Year's Eve dance at our hall in Māngere. The hall was decorated with sparkling fairy lights, colourful lanterns and hundreds of coloured balloons. It was a fabulous night and a great way to see in the New Year.

The monthly dances on the second Saturday of each month are well attended by local Auckland dancers. A fun place to enjoy a night of dancing and to socialise with your friends. Cost for the evening is $10.

If you want to practice new dance steps or to revise all your old ones the hall is open for practices every Tuesday from 7:30pm to 9pm. Cost is $3 for members and $5 for non-members.

A group of 20+ keen dancers attend the weekly Sunday night line dancing session plus practice many of our fun dances. A great opportunity to get your weekly exercise and to keep fit from 7:30pm to 10pm, cost $3 members and $5 non- members.

This is good for mind and body, but more importantly, it's great to get your glad rags out and meet new friends and socialise. For seniors, dancing has been most effective in improving your balance and revitalising your energy.

For any questions, contact Les on 027 283 8395 or Geoff on 021 519 513.

It has become very popular. There are 4 courts available to use. ACCC members are welcome to come and try this very popular sport. Tuition is available to new players.

Senior Lifestyle Group by Elsie Wong

We have just celebrated our 10th anniversary and we are going from strength to strength. Weekly attendance averages 40+ even when there are so many away on cruises, tours, or overseas doing a stint of voluntary work - for example, I met Johnston and Fong Luen on the train platform at Papakura a couple of weeks ago with luggage and backpacks and curiosity got the better of me and I just had to ask where they were off to. Reply was “Off to Iran” dentistry volunteering for 3 months.

Every Tuesday the activities start at 10:30am for an hour of tai chi under the instruction of David Wong but if you would rather chat and socialise, that’s okay. Not all are inclined to exercise whether it be from bad back, creaky knees, hip replacements, etc etc. although probably would be better with some movement.

Oh the vagaries of old age but of course that is only a number! Read just recently if you think about all your aches and pains, they are exacerbated and you feel even more painful than they really are. Moral of the story. Change your thinking.

A shared lunch comes after that and it truly is party time. Week by week four tables are piled with all manner of delights of edible goodies and really if you didn’t have time for breakfast you can make up for it. Generally there is even enough for afternoon tea after a bout of mah jong, ukulele playing and singing, card games, fan and sword tai chi.

We have Chinese DVDs, indoor bowls, or table tennis tables if that is your bent and if there is anything else you would like, let it be known. If anyone has a spare mahjong table not in use we would be delighted if you donate or loan it to us.

Lately we had a teacher teach Chinese dance and line dancing, and we also have a Mandarin class. From time to time we have outings and trips, latest being a very enjoyable four day trip to Gisborne.

Our very accomodating driver John Craven suggested if we could get up early (5am) he would take us to see the sunrise weather at Makorori beach as Gisborne is the first place in the world to see it. Well it was absolutely worth the effort of getting out of bed that early and many photos were taken. It was practically a full complement of us bar the few who were going to have a ride on the vintage train instead. They were bitterly disappointed because that service was defunct.

The highlight of the trip was Mayor Meng Foon being the bus tour guide by default. What was to have been a trip to his council chambers and a look around and talk didn’t eventuate as he mislaid the keys to get in! So be it.

We really scored on him accompanying us on the bus and his commentary was so entertaining and enlightening on all the projects and how the city’s rates were allotted to them. How much better could it get than to have the maestro himself explaining all the improvements for his beloved city and its early history, Young Nick’s Head, Footrot Flats, Tairawhiti Museum, etc. The sightseeing took us up Kaiti Hill and Sunshine Brewery, makers of the legendary Gisborne Gold Lager. We spent a few hours at the farmers market and everyone seemed to buy and eat well. Produce there with such a good climate was lusciously sweet, large, and very reasonably priced.

We met up with some members of NZCA at dinner at China Palace and renewed friendships.

The gods were smiling on us as apart from a light shower here and there weather was good and warm. A lovely drive home through Whakatāne and Rotorua and the winding road through the Waioeka Gorge on leaving Gisborne never fails to impress me for its beauty.

Mayor Meng is retiring from office after 18 successful years and not contesting re election. We wish him well for his future pursuits and many thanks for being our bus tour guide.

The Fruits of Our Labours

Long before supermarkets became a one-stop shop for fresh produce as they are today, local fruit and vegetable stores run by Chinese families were a pillar of our communities. The greengrocers and fruiterers in our towns and cities were a family affair; fathers, brothers, sons, mothers, sisters and daughters all working from the early hours to get only the best produce for their shelves.

A new two-volume soft cover set of books, The Fruits of Our Labours: Chinese Fruit Shops in New Zealand, chronicles the lives of these pioneering greengrocers and fruiterers as they carved their place into the country’s rich social and cultural tapestry. The personal anecdotes, historical documents and photos tell the stories of these families as they provided a vital service with a smile to their community and their journeys of growing up Kiwis.

That includes the story of Colin Lowe of Norman Lowe Ltd in Whakatāne: Being the son of a fruiterer meant you spent most of your spare time after school and in the weekends helping out. As a child I can still remember time spent unfolding unsold newspaper ready for wrapping veges in, unloading empty boxes and stacking them alongside the driveway ready for a carrier to collect them and take them to a market garden, sorting out the broken ones for repairing.

These stories bring a unique perspective on New Zealand’s history as they trace the evolution of these shops from the general store-cum-greengrocery of the 1880s through to the fresh fruit and vegetable retailers we know today. It follows the fortunes and misfortunes of the Chinese in New Zealand through the hard times of the Depression and World War II, the growth and boom times of the 1950s and '60s and the challenge of supermarket giants eating up the competition.

Commissioned by the Chinese Poll Tax Heritage Trust, The Fruits of Our Labours was written and researched by Ruth Lam, Beverly Lowe, Helen Wong, Michael Wong, and Carolyn King. Volume 1 (440 pages) presents the stories of Chinese-owned fruit shops from the Dunedin region through to the Wanganui- Taranaki region. Volume 2 (464 pages) presents stories from the Hawke’s Bay region through to the Auckland region. The appendices include a list of all known Chinese fruit shops from the 1880s to the current day, and maps of the Guangdong counties the Chinese fruiterers originated from. Both volumes are fully-illustrated with photos, graphs and statistical tables. The books will be a valuable resource for researchers of Chinese in New Zealand, genealogists, local history, and produce retailing. For more information, see us on Facebook www.facebook.com/fruitshopsnz or email [email protected] ISBN 978-0-473-41550-1 RRP $90.00 per set

Special Price for ACCC members: $50 per set Purchase for each of your family members as a permanent momento of the hardships endured by your parents and grandparents and of a special history of Chinese in NZ.
