Its aims include: • Enriching learner’s understanding, and awareness of both the local and the global environment. • Promoting problem solving, and practical hands-on skills. • Improving learner achievement in science, mathematics and technology. • Facilitating global communication, co-operation and information exchange between learners, schools, scientists and communities. • Encouraging local projects and initiatives on environmental issues.

South Africa became a full participant in the GLOBE programme on 17 February 1997 following the signing of the GLOBE agreement by the then Deputy President Mbeki and Vice President Gore.

Globe in Africa – Environmental Resource development and Training (GIA ERD&T) was registered under section 21 and integrates components of Earth System Science, Ocean Science and Primary Health Care. GIA is responsible for the GLOBE Africa Regional Help Desk function of the 23 participating African Countries.

RATIONALE

It is essential to find ways of realising the potential of international environmental education associations whilst simultaneously ensuring that all role-players can engage actively and equitably in environmental initiatives on both local and global stages. An interdisciplinary approach that promotes scientific excellence and critical social enquiry is essential. The quest for scientific excellence and global environmental knowledge is meaningless unless accompanied by educational and environmental equity.

IMMEDIATE IMPACTS

• Promotion of scientific and environmental skills and opportunities amongst South African teachers and learners • Improved communication between role-players in the field of environmental education, science and technology. • Direct involvement of practitioners in research and curriculum development thereby contributing to national curriculum development process • More equitable relations and better understanding between environmental educators from differing socio-economic and cultural context. • Contribution to the field of environmental education research.

INTERMEDIATE IMPACTS

• Improved understanding amongst South African teachers and learners of the role that science and technology can play in understanding the earth and its system. • Collaborative engagement in action research initiatives that address local environmental concerns e.g. food security within the context of global environmental debate.

ULTIMATE IMPACTS

• Better understanding of the concept of environmental equity and the ways in which this can be achieved through environmental education

17 SOUTH AFRICAN EDUCATION – AN OVERVIEW

South Africa has 12.3-million school pupils, some 386 600 teachers and 27 187 schools, including 1 011 registered independent or private schools, and 26 120 public or state-run schools. Of all schools, roughly 16 600 are primary schools (grade 0 to grade 6), 5 700 are secondary or high schools (grade 7 to grade 12), 900 are intermediate and 3 800 combined primary and secondary schools. South Africa has a vibrant higher education sector, with more than a million students enrolled in the country's 24 state-funded tertiary institutions: 11 universities, five universities of technology, and six comprehensive institutions.

At almost 5.5% of gross domestic product, South Africa has one of the highest rates of government investment in education in the world - usually around 20% of total government expenditure. In the 2007 national Budget education received R105.5-billion, amounting to 17.8% of total spending.

The South African Department of Basic Education has identified the following targets to be achieved by 2014: • the number of Grade 12 learners who pass the national examinations and qualify to enter a Bachelor's programme at a university must increase from 105 000 to 175 000 • the number of Grade 12 learners who pass Mathematics and Physical Science must total 225 000 and 165 000 respectively • the percentage of learners in grades three, six and nine in public schools who obtain the minimum acceptable mark in the national assessments for Language and Mathematics (or Numeracy) must improve from between 27% and 38% to at least 60%.

Priorities To support the education system, the Department of Basic Education set out the following priorities: • by 2014, there will be universal access to Grade R for all age-appropriate children • adequate learning and teaching materials will be developed and distributed, particularly to those schools the department has identified. • standardised ANA of the quality of learning

Communication with delegates

On submission of registration, the delegate will receive various forms of communication as part of the management of their information, namely:  Automated e‐mail acknowledgements, confirmations including receipt information and event details, and mass announcements.  The database registration system allows for the generation of invoices for delegates. These invoices are set up to reflect the billing address details and the person to whom the invoice needs to be sent to (Not always the actual delegate). VAT numbers of both parties are indicated on the invoice and we would be required to complete numerous supplier registration forms in order for many of the departments to be able to process payments for the conference.  Special information requested by the Client to communicate to delegates  SMS’s if required (at an extra cost per person)  Follow up reminders (money outstanding, programme updates, website updates etc)  Final confirmation letter including all last minute information for them to print and bring with. All contactable details and logistics to be included.  Visa letters – delegates who require visa letters are assisted with a letter of invitation.

Chase outstanding fees ‐ send reminder notification to delegates who have not paid timeously.

Once a delegate has registered and indicated his payment method, an invoice is sent and a reminder set for follow up. The bank account is checked on a regular basis and reconciliations to the bank account are carried out to ensure that all payments received are identified and allocated (receipted) on the database system.

Delegates are tracked with their payment records and all delegates who are 30 days or more are chased for payments, similar to a debtors control book. Should a delegate be 60 days overdue, a telephonic request is logged and tracked through the system in the Notes Module. All communication with delegates is entered into the notes module for reference at any stage. Automated regular reminders are sent through email to all delegates pushing for payments to be made well in advance of the event. By automating and setting the reminder dates for the outstanding delegate fees, this leaves little room for error.

Prior to the conference, these outstanding payments are chased and delegates are encouraged to pay to avoid being excluded from the event. Should there be certain delegates who appear to be problematic, these would be referred to the Client for course of action to be agreed upon. It is our intention to have payments in advance to ensure that onsite handling of dues is minimalistic.

Secure, encrypted online payments (We have a Thawte Secure Server Licence) ‐ online payment processing

 We would offer to use Centeq Events online merchant facilities. The merchant rates would be dependent on what facility is decided by the client and would be an additional cost of the event, normally in the region of 3.5% of the fees processed.  Our system has been fully integrated to our e‐commerce service provider (Paygate) and is a back to back process. There is no manual processing of credit cards and this is a true online procedure. All online credit card transactions are automatically receipted directly into our database so that your reports and information is real‐time. (It is not a manual process and then someone has to still receipt, its fully automated).  We do not offer refunds online as we believe that refunds should be authorised by the client first.  We offer mastercard and visa, however if Diners is required we will negotiate rates for these transactions.  We reconcile on a monthly basis and remit funds less the 3.5% back to your conference account.

A truly integrated online processing method that is safe, secure and integrated ‐ real time into the database management programme.

Onsite liaison and query management

Staff are trained to assist attendees and deal with any onsite queries that arise and to report to the manager on duty should there be any issues that need special attention.

We also suggest that the team has a training period and induction briefing prior to the event. Updates and debriefs are given each morning and each evening and notes taken to give to client if required.

Financial Management

A conference is only as successful as the financial management of the event. We provide detailed reconciliations against bank statements and credit cards that marry to the database and ensures that the financial status of the event is up to date and accurate to enable you to make the necessary logistic decisions.

We operate a full set of books and these are provided to the Committee on a monthly basis together with reports from the database.

In Conclusion

Your registration administration is a specific task where you would like the delegates to have a professional experience from start to finish. Centeq Events is your team to carry out this specialised, administrative duty – leaving the Executive Congress Management Committee to provide direction with regards to the programme and logistics.

Abstract Management proposal

Presented by Centeq Events Crystal Kasselman

40 PROPOSAL TO MANAGE THE ONLINE ABSTRACT SUBMISSIONS

ABSTRACT MANAGEMENT

Centeq Events is pleased to have the opportunity to submit a proposal on the handling of all the abstracts for your forthcoming event. We operate our business using an Australian software solution called Events Pro and Events interactive which we have been using since 2001, managing abstracts for large international events.

The process for the submission of abstracts is outlined as follows using the speakers’ module of the events pro database programme:

Speakers

The Speakers Module manages the logistics and information collection from, and dissemination to, speakers, authors, reviewers and the organizer with flexibility and ease.

• Create your conference program

• Abstract submission via the internet

• Manage abstract and paper submissions, review process and session allocations

• Track and store AV requirements, presenter biographies and co-authors

• Correspond with speakers, chairpersons, reviewers and authors

• Detailed lists including program, audio visual and room setup

• Stores multiple authors for one paper

• Speakers checklist to track requirements, fully customizable

Develop an abstract platform for online submissions

Using our online abstract management software, we will develop an online registration procedure to suit the requirements of the event. The look and feel of the pages can be determined by the client and provided to us in order for us to adapt and personalise the forms accordingly.

Together with input from the LOC team, the registration information will be finalised and the url link given to the website developers for online submissions to go live.

Handling all abstract enquiries

We will set up a conference email address specific for the event (eg: [email protected]) where all enquiries regarding the process can be channelled through a catch all account where our staff will have access to incoming mail and will action accordingly. Our sophisticated software programme is able to track all communication and delegate information and requirements. We have a secretariat office that will manage all delegate enquiries and will assist delegates with all their requirements.

IN CONCLUSION

We would like to thank you for your consideration. Should we be appointed, we would require a week from date of signed quotation in order for us to be able to personalise the abstract format and templates and testing to ensure that all aspects are operational. We would also require the branding elements to incorporate into the forms.

We look forward to hearing from you in this regard and are ready and raring to go. We do understand that you are also considering the online registration process which we would like to be able to offer you in conjunction with the abstract process, however a separate proposal will be submitted for this aspect.

At the heart of the CCID’s mandate is the vision to ensure that Cape Town is a safe, clean and caring city. The CCID also promotes the city for business and world-class events.

To date, thanks to the work of the CCID, the Central City is now a place where the people of Cape Town can work, live, relax and experience a unique, pleasant urban environment.

The formation of the CCID – which has become an internationally-acclaimed model of public-private partnership – was a significant event for Cape Town because it was the first time a major South African city had implemented a fully constituted, legally bound City Improvement District covering the core of the Central Business District.

The CCID works closely with its partners to offer safety and security, quality urban management and social development services to stakeholders in the Central City.

CCID safety and security measures include visible policing, reaction units, policing of traffic infringements, ATM fraud detection, regulation of informal trading, event security, public assistance, vehicle breakdown assistance and security forums.

CCID urban management consists of four precinct managers who monitor the streets and public spaces in Cape Town on a daily basis. The managers receive regular report-backs on defects within the precincts. They hold regular meetings with local authorities with the aim of developing urban management solutions.

The CCID provides a dedicated top-up cleansing service, making use of previously unemployed people, in the Central City. Streets and public spaces are kept clean and graffiti-free by 65 dedicated cleaners around the clock.

Cape Town International Convention Centre Expansion

The proposed expansion of the Cape Town International Convention Centre and other urban regeneration projects planned for the city is set to boost Cape Town’s reputation as a globally competitive business destination and contribute to economic growth through driving job creation in the province.

The expansion, which will effectively double the centre’s capacity, will primarily add flexible multi-purpose exhibition space to the centre, in line with international trends. In addition the expansion is set to create an iconic convention centre precinct, which would comprise of 10 000 square metres of retail space, a hospital, hotel and an office tower.

The CTICC expansion will not only promote significant growth in the number of national and international conferences and exhibitions hosted in Cape Town, it will also play a pivotal role in driving skills development in the region and contribute massively to local job creation – both during the initial construction phase and thereafter as a result of sustainable jobs to support the rise in induced tourism.

The expansion will be undertaken in line with the CTICC’s established commitment to integrated sustainability through effective economic, social and environmental advancement. The ultimate aim is to design and build a world-class green building incorporating the Professional Architectural design services of the trio of award-winning local architects – Piet Bakker of Stauch Voster Architects, Anya van der Merwe of Van der Merwe Miszewski Architects and Mokena Makeka of Makeka Design Lab.

South Africa is a long-haul destination for most international delegates. As such it makes sense to combine a trip to South Africa with a visit to one or more of the magnificent destinations that are on offer. From spectacular beaches to superb wildlife experiences, from deserts to one of the most stunning waterfalls in the world, Africa beckons with all that is great and wonderful. Here is a small sample of tours that will be on offer. The organisers will also tailor-make itineraries on request and collaborate closely with delegates in creating unique and special experiences.

The Garden Route and Eastern Cape This tour traditionally commences in either Port Elizabeth or Cape Town and works equally well in either direction. The tour visits the famed Garden Route, with a dramatic and spectacular coastline of cliffs interspersed with endless golden beaches, huge natural lagoons, and thick indigenous coastal forests. Inland there are mountain passes and desert scenery and the famed Cango caves, as well as the Addo Elephant National Park with its large elephant herds. The tour usually lasts three nights and four days, and it is also possible to do this, and indeed any other tour, as a self drive. There are also a variety of luxury game lodges to choose from.

Kruger National Park and Mpumalanga There are direct flights between Cape Town and Kruger International airport on the edge of Kruger Park. Alternatively, main tours commence and end in Johannesburg, which is a major hub for many international flights. Standard tours visit the highlights of the eastern escarpment with its waterfalls and canyons, rich mining history and dramatic scenery. The tours then lead on to the world-renowned Kruger National Park, which exposes travellers to the very best that Africa has to offer in terms of wildlife experiences. Stays can either be in National Park’s accommodation within the park, or at the luxurious private lodges situated in the private reserves that adjoin the Kruger. Both experiences are unique and infinitely rewarding, and last from three days upwards.

Northern KwaZulu-Natal This tour commences and ends in Durban. The tour encompasses the great park of Hluhluwe-Umfolozi with the world’s greatest concentration of white and black rhino, as well as being home to the big five. Then there is a visit to a traditional village to experience the history and rich tapestry of culture of the proud Zulu nation. There is also a visit to the World Heritage site of iSmangaliso Wetland park, whilst in Durban there is a visit to the Sharks Board and to the Ushaka Marine World.

Namibian Spectacular Namibia is a country of superlatives, from the mighty Fish River canyon to the highest dunes in the world near Sossusvlei, from cosmopolitan cities like Swakopmund and Windhoek to extraordinary national parks like Etosha. This is a land of splendid contrasts, where the overall impression is of vast open spaces and an endless African sky. Tours are available ex Cape Town, Johannesburg or Windhoek and the average duration is 7-10 days.

Botswana’s Okavango Delta Possibly the finest scenery for wildlife in Africa. Pristine and primeval Africa is offset by superb private lodges where you can experience the best of the African wilderness. Any trip to the Okavango is unforgettable and life-changing. Packages depart Johannesburg and Cape Town and normally are a minimum of three days, although travellers can extend to spend time at a number of distinctly different lodges. The Okavango is a vast wetland in the Kalahari Desert where the desert is transformed into a wildlife paradise, and as such water-based and land packages make for a unique blend of experiences.

Postberg, West Coast 1121 Victoria Falls The Victoria Falls or Mosi-oa-Tunya (the Mist that Thunders) is a waterfall located in southern Africa on the Zambezi River between the countries of Zambia and Zimbabwe. The falls are some of the largest in the world. The Victoria Falls are considered by some to be among the Seven Natural Wonders of the World David Livingstone, the Scottish missionary and explorer, is believed to have been the first European recorded to view the Victoria Falls. For a considerable distance above the falls, the Zambezi flows over a level sheet of basalt, in a shallow valley bounded by low and distant sandstone hills. The river’s course is dotted with numerous tree-covered islands, which increase in number as the river approaches the falls. There are no mountains, escarpments, or deep valleys which might be expected to create a waterfall, only flat plateau extending hundreds of kilometres in all directions. The falls are formed as the full width of the river plummets in a single vertical drop into a transverse chasm 1708 meters (5604 ft) wide, carved by its waters along a fracture zone in the basalt plateau. Victoria Falls is roughly thrice the height of North America’s Niagara Falls and well over twice the width of its Horseshoe Falls. In height and width Victoria Falls is rivalled only by South America’s Iguazu Falls.

Tropical Paradises South Africans have known for many years of the most wonderful tropical island destinations on their doorstep, enough to make the Caribbean or Pacific quite ordinary. These special island destinations are just a flight away from South Africa. Whether it’s the stunning Seychelles with its wonderful beaches or magical Mauritius with its pampered five star luxury or the outdoor adventure and French-cuisine of Reunion with its active volcano, to the underwater coral reefs of the Bazaruto archipelago in Mozambique, all are easily in reach of South Africa as affordable and extraordinary tropical getaways. Packages can be tailor-made to suit budget and length of stay.

Stopovers en route Many international flights pass through the gateway of Johannesburg. This is a city that should not be missed as a stopover package en route to Cape Town. A wide variety of tours and excursions are possible and these include cultural tours to the township of Soweto, to the Apartheid Museum and Constitution Hill to relive South Africa’s recent political history, to Gold Reef City for a replica mining village of early Johannesburg, a city tour to experience the enormous cultural and architectural richness of the city, a visit to the Rhino and Lion Reserve north of the city or the De Wildt Cheetah rehabilitation Centre, the Elephant Sanctuary to get up close and personal with elephants including a ride on the back of an elephant, Sun City with its Las Vegas feel and great Pilanesberg National Park, or a tour of and the Cullinan diamond mine. Johannesburg is a destination in its own right, cosmopolitan and up beat. Do not miss it.

113 social responsibility The Cape Town and Western Cape offers a variety of social upliftment and empowerment projects that may be included as part of the Social Responsibility plan for any event.

There is a shift to align social responsibility with corporate and event strategy; more efficiently use corporate and event skills and abilities for community investments; and a move to accurately measure impacts of investments both on the company and the event and on the larger society and environment.

A wide range of programmes are available in Cape Town and the Western Cape that will range from Responsible gifting suppliers, conference equipment i.e. bags and collateral to recycling of event materials.

Projects will vary from Environmental Programmes to Social Development Involvement, depending on the special interest and focus of an event and convention that will be aligned with the larger CSR strategy and plan.

Once a specific interest has been identified, the Cape Town Convention Bureau will be able to facilitate organizers towards registered and accredited projects.
