PRESENTATION OF THE DOCTORAL PROGRAMME IN ECONOMICS AND TECHNIQUES FOR THE CONSERVATION OF THE ARCHITECTURAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL HERITAGE

Introduction The University of Nova Gorica and the University IUAV of Venice established in 2004 the joint 2nd Level Master in Economics and Techniques for the Conservation of the Architectural and Environmental Heritage (ETCAEH). This programme became integral part of the homonym PhD established by the University of Nova Gorica. From the a.y. 2011- 2012 the course is carried out with the patronage of ICCROM (International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property).

The ETCAEH program investigates the relationship among economics and techniques for the heritage preservation, management and planning by approaching the complexity of bonds and disciplinary emancipations that emerge from the intertwine of different involved scientific field and research perspectives. Finally, the course outcomes converge into the juridical and legislative sphere, which takes place in the Centre for Environment, Heritage, Health and Justice jointly established with IAES- International Academy for Environmental Sciences.

For the coming academic year 2012/2013 it is foreseen the opening of the new premises of the Centre for Environment, Heritage, Health and Justice in Strasbourg where the first semester of the course will be carried out. This initial part constitute the common core focused on the teaching of institutional, juridical and legislation framework: concepts, methodologies and intervention within cultural heritage and environmental context. The courses of the program, carried out in Venice in the following semester, in the proximity of a challenging protection and management reality, are given by international experts and professors from different international universities and institutions, merging theoretical achievements and case studies analyses, through an intra – and trans – disciplinary approach.

33 Presentation of the course contents Protection , management and planning of cultural heritage is at the centre of the ETCAEH Programme research activities. The Doctoral programme investigates the relationship between economics, management and technique of conservation of cultural heritage. The central part of the research activities reflects on both: the complexity of bonds and disciplinary emancipations that rouse from the intertwine of different involved scientific fields and the research perspectives that result from these relationships. The study course is carried on through different study periods and modules as illustrated in schedule. The first, so called “supra disciplinary” part of the research investigates the methods, the history and the concepts of the examined context and is subsequently supported by periods of sub-disciplinary studies, which takes place at specific experimental and research laboratories; some of these laboratories are already active at the IUAV University (LAMA Laboratory of analysis of antique materials and LabSCo Laboratory of Construction Science), others have been established and organized around the activities and interests developed in the UNG-IUAV collaboration with other partner universities: Laboratory for the protection and management of cultural landscapes (ProMaCuLa Laboratory for the Protection and Management of Cultural Landscapes), Laboratory for Seismic Rehabilitation and Laboratory for Protection of Modern Heritage. Given the work area all research topics are conducted in line with the strategies and cooperation of the major institutions and organizations for the protection of national treasures, such as ICCROM, UNESCO, Council of Europe

At the beginning of the course the student prepares, together with the mentor or tutor, an annual programme of the didactic commitments and of the individual research work, always considering the three-year programme required for the conclusion of the studies.

Research Topics The didactic project and the research activities focus on topics of socio-economic, historical- critical and technical-observational analysis in the practices of conservation of cultural heritage. In particular how can these practices develop the potential of build and environmental heritage in order to improve the conditions of the communities involved in the process of preservation and creation of assets. The complexity of the relationships developing between the various skills/knowledge involved and the issues that emerge from this, are structured into the following fields of integrated research: the economic and managerial field, which interacts with the techniques for the conservation of build and environmental heritage, and then both converge in the juridical and normative research, which takes place in the Laboratory for Environment, Heritage, Health and Justice.

Centre for Environment, Heritage, Health and Justice

77 At the centre of the cultural, institutional and research activities of the centre is investigation of potential transversalities between different knowledges, skills and experiences that are involved in protection, management and planning practices of environmental and cultural heritage. While the intertwine of traditional sciences is undertaken within doctoral ETCAEH program, the centre aims at investigating and creating relationships between these sciences through a comparative juridical approach. The centre compares different scales and goals of involved scientific and professional experiences and how these are involved within institutional, legislative and normative practices on European and international level.

ProMaCuLa - Laboratory for the Protection and Management of Cultural Landscapes. Research group: prof.dr. Jukka Jokilehto, prof. dr. Xavier Greffe, prof. Paola Falini, prof.dr. Saša Dobričič, On. Michl Ebner

The research investigates how knowledge of history, theories, methods and working tools employed within different (traditional) scientific disciplines that are involved in landscape studies can contribute to the enrichment of contemporary thinking currents, practices in planning and design. The research perspective is oriented toward the concept of landscape considered as a system of relationships “a scenario and a product of the collective in the process of defining itself”.

The laboratory is engaged in establishment of South_Eastern Europe Landscape Observatory. From 2008-2011 the activities have been mainly developed through the integrated research approach on issues of Historic Urban Landscape and Cultural Landscape.

Research group name: Historic Urban Landscape Research group brief description: Within the working framework of the Historic Urban Landscape the project aims to investigate the heritage paradox through the means of landscape intended as a research method. The European urban context represents the ideal experimentation field for the heritage paradox situation that negotiates in between the needs for additional protection regulation and aims toward new developing strategies. Within the urban landscape working field and through the concept of landscape as research method , alternative socio- economic concepts, development drivers, juridical frameworks etc. are explored.

Laboratory for Seismic Rehabilitation

The area of the techniques for the Protection of Heritage focuses mainly on the analysis and improvement of the structural characteristics and of the properties of historical materials, through two research themes: the Earthquake Rehabilitation (Laboratory for Seismic Rehabilitation) and the conservation of modern heritage (Laboratory for Protection of Modern

88 Heritage). These areas of research are combined to the activities of the laboratories: LAMA Laboratory of antique materials (University IUAV of Venice), LabSCo Laboratory of Construction Science (University IUAV of Venice).
