GRAY (T’UU’TK), B.A.S., BENNETT COLLEGE FOR WOMEN M.A., UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST Ph.D., UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST Co-Directed by: Professors Jane Anderson and Sonya Atalay As a result of the settler colonial project in North America, Ts’msyen have been thrust into a state of reclamation. The purpose of this study was to examine the distinctiveness of what it means for Ts’msyen to reclaim given our particular history and experiences with settler colonialism. Utilizing the poetics and politics as a theoretical, methodological and practical framework, this dissertation synthesizes the motivations, possibilities and obstacles associated with Ts’msyen reclamation in the contemporary era. Further, as a contribution to the literature on decolonization, Indigenous nationhood, Indigenous subjectivity, Indigenous methodologies and repatriation of Indigenous cultural heritage, I report on two multi-sited, auto-ethnographic, and community-based research initiatives: (1) a repatriation case study focusing on the legal and ethical dimensions associated with reclaiming Ts’msyen songs from archives, and (2) a case study focusing on embodied sovereignty and heritage reclamation with an urban Ts’msyen dance group. To contextualize the information generated from my engagements with over 200 Ts’msyen, I also offer my own experiences as a Ts’msyen hana’ax (woman), and as a dancer and a singer. Primary data are derived from a series of listening gatherings, translation workshops and talking circles from the repatriation case study; and a Photovoice project, vii talking circle and dance ethnography from the dance group study. Secondary data are derived from Ts’msyen lived social realties in the third space; academic literature; current affairs and archival research. Key findings show (a) the ways in which Ts’msyen laws and systems of property ownership are enacted when Ts’msyen sing and dance, (b) how an Indigenous research paradigm develops organically based on an ethos of relational accountability, (c) how Indigenous standpoints alter ethnographic form and disrupt objectified knowledge production, (d) and where to put the theories of decolonization into praxis in settler colonial contexts. Ultimately, this dissertation is representative of a Ts’msyen manifesto.     Atlantis Vol. 14 No. 1 FalllAutomne 1988 Women Were Made For Such Things: Women Missionaries in British Columbia 1850s-1940s Margaret Whitehead University of Victoria ABSTRACT As Canadian Church historians have traditionally portrayed men as the movers and shakers of Canadian Church historical development, most published scholarship on the history of Canada's missionaries deal almost exclusively with men. Yet, preliminary research on British Columbia's missionary frontier suggests that women made a vital contribution to the Churches' proselytization work among the province's "heathens." This paper argues that female missionaries, acting in the dual roles of church functionaries and society's cultural emissaries, played a crucial role in the development not only of frontier educational, medical, and social services but also of white/native relationships. These women found in their missionary roles both continuing limitations and new opportunities for independence. Answering this question requires both that I show what the variation is, and why it may be that way; I have approached these questions by conducting a study in two parts. First, I conducted a demographic survey and ethnographically-informed qualitative interview with nine Gitksan speakers. Second, I performed an acoustic analysis of vowel variation across these same speakers. The acoustic results lead me to conclude that the low and front vowels show the most variation between speakers. My findings allowed me to add to our understanding of individual variation across speakers and communities. Although further investigation is needed to come to a conclusion about the generalizability of these results, the overarching contribution of my work is to add phonetic detail to previous descriptions of variation between speakers within the Interior Tsimshianic dialect continuum.

    KITSELAS FIRST NATION LAND USE PLAN 2019 DRAFT The Land Use Plan is a DRAFT living document and must be reviewed as part of all decision-making processes on Kitselas’ Reserve lands. This is to ensure that any proposed future decisions related to the use of land are consistent with the Plan. Any decisions related to new development or expansion or relocation of existing development must adhere to the Land Use Plan. Examples of projects that would require input from the Land Use Plan include, but may not be limited to: Residential development (homes and subdivisions) Commercial development Industrial development Infrastructure development Community facilities Resource extraction activities (i.e. forestry and mining) DRAFT Preamble his Land Use Plan will be interpreted in accordance with the culture, traditions and customs of Kitselas First Nation (KFN). The preamble for the Kitselas Reserve Lands Management Act (posted Ton the Kitselas First Nation website) provided guidance for the development of the Land Use Plan. The Act sets out the principles and legislative and administrative structures that apply to Kitselas land and by which the Nation exercises authority over this land. The preamble to the Kitselas Reserve Lands Management Act is derived from the Men of M’deek, the oral translation of the Kitselas people as described by Walter Wright.     An Historic Event in the Political Economy of the Tsimshian : Information on the Ownership of the Zimacord District* JAMES ANDREW McDONALD This paper reconstructs and presents a bit of ethnographic information that is based upon a piece of the oral history of the Tsimshian people,, a society native to what is now northwestern British Columbia. The value of the history lies not only in the events described, but also in the illustra­ tion it provides of relationships between a set of houses in two neighbour­ ing villages prior to the Canadian Confederation. In the history can be seen several aspects of the old property relationships under which the Tsimshian lived, as well as an outline of their social organization. Anthropologically understood, property is a socially embedded defini­ tion of relationships between persons within a society. The property piece itself, not necessarily a material object, is a mediation of these relation­ ships, a focus of attention for how persons and groups are to relate to one another. Thus, property defines the rights and obligations people and groups have to each other, setting the limits to the use of the property while demanding adherence to the dominant mores of the community, and re-establishing these relationships in the process. Any particular form of property is always stamped by the impression of the society in which it exists and by which it is defined. In the story about the Zimacord District lies the mark of Tsimshian society attempt­ ing to re-assert proper practices towards territorial resource property, and to justify a particular arrangement of ownership, in this case that of the acquisition of property by one group from another.

    "A Useful Christian Woman": First Nations' Women and Protestant Missionary Work in Ma^aret whitehead T-» • • i ^i i • Camosun College British Columbia — Lansdowne Campus ABSTRACT Research on British Columbia's missionary frontier suggests that women made a vital contribution to the Churches' proselytization work among the province's First Nations. However, proselytization was not the work of white women only. Aboriginal women appear to have contributed significantly to the missionary work of the Protestant Churches. Christianity, which imposed European values along with conversion, had a profound effect on aboriginal women's lives. For some, it offered, as it had to their white sisters, new opportunities for influence and status; for others, it created alienation from their people and culture. Thomas Crosby was born in Pickering, Yorkshire, England in 1840 and in 1856 came to Canada with his parents, the family settling near Woodstock, Upper Canada. He left Woodstock in 1862, landed in Victoria in the same year and was send to Nanaimo to take charge of an Indian school. After travelling extensively on the B.C. coast, he took up work in the Chilliwack area in 1869. In 1871 he was ordained a minister in the Methodist Church of Canada and obtained a furlough in 1873 to travel to Ontario and married Emma Jane Douse from Barrie, Ontario, on April 30, 1874. They travelled to Port Simpson in 1874, which Rev. Crosby used as a base of operations for 23 years of missionary work in the region. The work required much travel and he received a missionary ship, called the Glad Tidings, to assist him in his work in 1889.

    Historical Background In 1862, Thomas Crosby left Woodstock, Ontario, to begin a missionary career that was to last 45 years. For some years, he worked among the native Indian people of Nanaimo and the Chilliwack Valley. Ordained in 1874, Crosby was sent to the mission opened the year before at Port Simpson by C. M. Tate. Travelling by canoe with a crew of recent converts, Crosby sought out the people on the fishing grounds and in their isolated villages. His work grew rapidly and it was soon obvious that a larger, power-driven boat was required. Methodists across Canada responded to Crosby's appeal, but a young Scottish shipwright actually began the mission fleet. In response to a sermon preached by Crosby in New Westminster, William Oliver offered to build the necessary boat at cost, provided he would be allowed to sail her. The "Glad Tidings" was launched in 1884 and plied the coast from Victoria to Port Simpson until she was blown ashore and wrecked in 1903. In 1908, William Oliver built and launched the "Udal" only to see her strike a rock and sink the next year. The "Homespun" served the Church until she was replaced in 1912 by the first THOMAS CROSBY. She was replaced in 1920 by three smaller vessels, of which the THOMAS CROSBY II served the north coast until she dragged her anchor and was blown ashore at Sandspit. With the backing of the Methodist Church, Captain Oliver built and launched the THOMAS CROSBY III in 1923. This vessel was used by the Methodist, then the United Church, following Union until 1938, when the THOMAS CROSBY IV was purchased.

Introduction This declaration is made by the Elected and Hereditary Chiefs of the Kitsumkalum Indian Band (“Kitsumkalum”) on behalf of all Kitsumkalum. Kitsumkalum is a strong, proud part of the Tsimshian Nation. We take exception to attempts to deny us our rightful place within the Tsimshian Nation, and to deny us our rightful place on the coast, with its sites and resources that are an integral part of who we are. This denial is more than an attempt to separate us from our lands and resources, it is an assault on who we are as people. We are supposed to be moving forward with Canada and British Columbia in a spirit of recognition and reconciliation. Instead, we are met with denial and resistance. In this declaration, we once again assert who we are and what is ours. We are a part of the Tsimshian Nation that exclusively occupied the Prince Rupert Harbour and surrounding coastal and inland areas prior to and as of 1846. Within that area, we hold exclusive ownership over and responsibity for specific sites in accordance with ayaawx, Tsimshian Law. We have aboriginal rights to fish, harvest, gather and engage in cultural and spiritual activities throughout the coastal part of our territory. There is much at stake – in particular with a Liquefied Natural Gas (“LNG”) industry at our doorstep. It is only through recognition on the part of Canada and British Columbia of our rights and title and an acknowledgement of your legal obligations to consult meaningfully with us that we can move forward in a spirit of mutual respect and work to achieve results for our mutual benefit.

    Tsimshian Wil’naat’ał and Society: Historicising Tsimshian Social Organization James A. McDonald Introduction ot far from Gitxaała are the people who live inside the mists of the Skeena River. Connected to Gitxaała by the familial ties of kinship and chiefly designs, theN eleven Aboriginal communities of the lower Skeena River also are part of the Tsimshian Nation. The prevailing understanding of Tsimshian social organization has long been clouded in a fog of colonialism. The resulting interpretation of the indigenous prop- erty relations marches along with the new colonial order but is out of step with values expressed in the teachings of the wilgagoosk – the wise ones who archived their knowledge in the historical narratives called adaawx and other oral sources. This chapter reviews traditional and contemporary Tsimshian social structures to argue that the land owning House (Waap1) and Clan (Wil’naat’ał) have been demoted in importance in favour of the residential and political communities of the tribe (galts’ap). Central to my argument is a critical analysis of the social importance of the contemporary Indian Reserve villages that is the basis of much political, cultural, and economic activity today. The perceived centrality of these settlements and their associated tribes in Tsimshian social structure has become a historical canon accepted by missionaries, politicians, civil servants, historians, geographers, archaeologists, and many “armchair” anthropologists. This assumption is a convention that loosens the Aboriginal ties to the land and resources and is attractive for the colonial society. It is a belief that has been normalized within the colonized worldview as the basis for relationships in civil society.
