  • The Birth of Jainism Mahavira the Path-Maker
JAINISM - RESPECT FOR ALL LIFE: By Myrtle Langley For a religion of only 3 million people, almost all of whom live in India, Jainism has wielded an influence out of all proportion to its size and its distribution. This influence has been felt most keenly in the modern world through Mahatma Gandhi. Although not himself a Jain, he grew up among Jains and embraced their most distinctive doctrine; non-violence to living beings (Ahimsa). But the influence of Jainism has also been felt in the Jain contribution to India’s banking and commercial life. As Buddhists are followers of the Buddha (the enlightened one), so Jains are the followers of the Jina (the conqueror), a title applied to Vardhamana, last of the great Jain teachers. It is applied also to those men and women who, having conquered their passions and emotions, have achieved liberation and attained perfection. And so the very name Jainism indicates the predominantly ethical character of this religion. THE BIRTH OF JAINISM The period from the seventh to the fifth centuries BC was a turning point in the intellectual and spiritual development of the whole world: it produced, among others, the early Greek philosophers, the great Hebrew prophets, Confucius in China and Zoroaster in Persia. For north India, the sixth century BC was a time of particular social, political and intellectual ferment. The older and more familiar tribal structure of society was disintegrating. In its place were appearing a few great regional kingdoms and a number of smaller tribal groupings known, as republics. These kept some of the characteristics of tribal structure but had little political power, being dependent on the largest of the kingdoms.

JAN 9 1986 EDITORIAL PREFACE THE writers of this series of volumes on the variant forms of religious life in India are governed in their work by two impelling motives. I. They endeavour to work in the sincere and sympathetic spirit of science. They desire to understand the perplexingly involved developments of thought and life in India and dis passionately to estimate their value. They recognize the futility of any such attempt to understand and evaluate, unless it is grounded in a thorough historical study of the phenomena investigated. In recognizing this fact they do no more than share what is common ground among all modern students of religion of any repute.

Mr. Veer Kumar Jain, learned Senior Counsel with Ms. Vaishali Jain, learned counsel for the respondent No.6. Whether approved : Yes for reporting Law laid down : 1) Terapanthi is a sect of Jain religion, which carries out Jalabhishek to Jin Pratima, which is being performed since time immemorial by men in respect of idol of Bawangajaji (Tirthankar) only to ensure that the Rules of Brahmcharya are followed. The practice is integral to the temple and it is “essential religious practice” of the temple and in noway amounts to discrimination keeping in view Article 25 and 26 of the Constitution of India, which guarantees protection of the cherished liberties of faith, belief and worship to persons belonging to all religions in a secular polity. 2) Judicial review of religious practices ought not be undertaken, as the Court cannot impose its morality or rationality with respect to the form of worship of a deity. Doing so would negate the WWW.LIVELAW.IN Writ Petition No.8310/2019 (PIL) - 2 - freedom to practice one's religion according to one's faith and beliefs. It would amount to rationalising religion, faith and beliefs, which is outside the ken of Courts.

The three main principles of Jainism are ahimsa (‘non-violence”) anekantavada (‘non-absolutism’) and aparigraha (non-attachment’): it is also characterized by asceticism. Followers of Jainism take five main vows: ahimsa (‘non-violence’), satya (‘truth’), asteya (‘not stealing’), brahmacharya (‘celibacy’, ‘chastity’), and aparigraha (‘non-attachment’). These principles have impacted Jain culture n many ways, such as leading to a predominantly vegetarian lifestyle that avoids harm to animals and their life cycles. Parasparopagraho Jivanam(‘the function of souls is to help one another’) is the motto of Jainism. Namokar Mantra is the most common and basic prayer in Jainism. Followers of Jainism are called “Jains”, a word derived from the Sanskrit word jinaI (‘victor’) and connoting the path of victory n crossing over life’s stream of rebirths through an ethical and spiritual life. Jains trace their history through a succession of twenty-four victorious saviors and teachers known as Tirthankaras, with the first being Rishabhanatha, who is believed to have lived millions of years ago, and twenty-fourth being the Mahavira around 500 BCE. Jains believe that Jainism is an eternal dharma with the Tirthankaras guiding every cycle of the Jain cosmology. Jainism has two major ancient sub-traditions, Digambaras and Svetambaras: and several smaller sub-traditions that emerged in the 2nd millennium CE.

It is always a challenge to capture the essence of a saint’s thoughts in another language. More so, when they are in the form of writings and reflections on sāmāyika, an essential process of self- purification. We are indeed grateful to Shri Sugalchand Jain for giving us this blessed opportunity of translating the words of one of the greatest saints of the Jaina religion, Upādhyāya Amar Muniji. The original Hindi text “Sāmāyika Sūtra” is a comprehensive work on the insights and profound implications behind the inclusion of sāmāyika in our lives. It is a religious discipline that brings equanimity in our lives and is considered one of the essential rites of Jaina spiritual practices. The great saint’s subtle, profound and insightful words are a priceless gift to us. The constant dwelling upon his magnificent thoughts during the process of translation has been a heart-warming reward indeed.
