Commercial sources of CaC2 may be contaminated with arsenic and phosphorous, which are also released during a chemical reaction. This constitutes a potentially serious health risk to ripeners and may contaminate the product. Although banned in many countries, CaC2 is still used in the Philippines because equally inexpensive and effective alternatives are lacking. This study investigated the relative efficacy of alternatives for ripening ‘Carabao’ mango. Fruit harvested at –1 107 d after flower induction were treated with CaC2 (2.5, 5.0, or 7.5 g kg ); ethephon (500, 1000, or 1500 μL L–1); Gliricidia sepium leaves (20% w/w); or ‘Cardava’ banana fruit (10% w/w) for 72 h. Mangoes were then held under ambient room conditions [29.9 ± 3.1°C, 77.74 ± 2.9% relative humidity (RH)] for 7 d. Assessments of peel color, firmness, and total soluble solids showed that fruit treated with higher concentrations of ethephon (1000 or 1500 μL L–1) exhibited similar ripening –1 responses as those treated with CaC2. -

The cultural characteristics among the 10 isolates studied, College of Horticulture, UHS showed that isolates Cg-1, Cg-2, Cg-4, Cg-5, Cg-6, Cg-7, Cg-8, Cg-10 were circular with smooth margin Campus, GKVK Post, both on 7th and 12th day of inoculation. Excellent sporulation was observed in Cg-8 and Cg-4 isolate, Bengaluru, Karnataka, India good sporulation was observed in Cg-3 and Cg-9 isolates whereas, medium sporulation in Cg-1, Cg-2, Cg-5, Cg-6 and Cg-7 isolates and poor sporulation was observed in Cg-10 isolate. Among the varieties Ranjitha N tested, none of them showed immune and resistant reaction to the disease under shade house condition. Department of Plant Pathology, Dasheri (20%) exhibited moderately resistant reaction, Totapuri (28%) and Himayudhin (29.70%) College of Horticulture, UHS Campus, GKVK Post, exhibited moderately susceptible reaction whereas, Mallika (35%) and Kesar (47.30%) exhibited Bengaluru, Karnataka, India susceptible reaction. Alphanso (62.50%), Neelam (56.20%) and Raspuri (75%) exhibited highly susceptible reaction. -
Environmental Profile
ENVIRONMENTAL PROFILE Guimaras province is an island ecosystem composed of five coastal municipalities which covers a land area of 60,547 hectares. The topography of Guimaras Island varies from level to steeply sloping with land elevation ranging from 0 to nearly 300 meters above sea level. Mt. Dinalman, located in Millan, Sibunag, has the highest elevation of 267 meters above mean sea level. A simplified topographic contour map indicates that the great part of islands land area is above 100 masl. By comparing the topographic features from the 1956 topographic maps with the present situation, it could be concluded that the island topography has not been altered much by man-made activities. The island’s topography shows quite steep slopes on the western side of island with plateaus and peaks above 200 m in the central portion. A large part or 69% of the total land area is within the 0-18% slope, 19.73% is above 18-30% slope, 9.42% is above 30-50% slope and 1.74 percent is above 50% slope. Figure 1. Slope Map of Guimaras Based on the preliminary Karst subsidence susceptibility mapping of MGB, in the Municipality of Buenavista there are 89 sinkholes (all types) and 85 cave openings while there are 457 sinkholes (all types) and 282 cave openings in the Municipality of Jordan. Maritime Trade by Origin and Destination The analysis is limited to a set of agricultural commodities corresponding to 101,159 monthly flows. About 5% of these exhibit highly improbable derived unit values suggesting encoding errors. More formally, provincial retail and farm gate prices are used as upper and lower bounds of unit values to check for outliers. In such cases, more weight is given to the volume record as advised by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), and values were adjusted according to the average unit price of the exports from the port of the nearest available month before and after the outlier observation. 2. Interprovince Land Trade Interprovince land trade flows were derived using Marketing Cost Structure Studies prepared by the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics for a number of products in selected years. These studies identify the main supply and destination provinces for certain commodities. The difference between production and consumption of a supply province is assumed to be the amount available for export to demand provinces. The derivation of imports of a demand province is straightforward when an importing province only has one source province. In cases where a demand province sources from multiple suppliers, such as the case of the National Capital Region (NCR), the supplying provinces are weighted according to the sample proportions in the survey. For example, NCR sources onions from Ilocos Norte, Pangasinan, and Nueva Ecija. Following the sample proportion of traders in each supply province, it is assumed that 26% of NCR imports came from Ilocos Norte, 34% from Pangasinan, and 39% from Nueva Ecija. -

ANTHROPOLOGICAL PAPERS OF THE AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY VOLUME XXIII NEW YORK PUBLISHED BY ORDER OF THE TRUSTEES 1925 Editor CLARK WISSLER FOREWORD Louis ROBERT SULLIVAN Since this volume is largely the work of the late Louis Robert Sulli- van, a biographical sketch of this able anthropologist, will seem a fitting foreword. Louis Robert Sullivan was born at Houlton, Maine, May 21, 1892. He was educated in the public schools of Houlton and was graduated from Bates College, Lewiston, Maine, in 1914. During the following academic year he taught in a high school and on November 24, 1915, he married Bessie Pearl Pathers of Lewiston, Maine. He entered Brown University as a graduate student and was assistant in zoology under Professor H. E. Walters, and in 1916 received the degree of master of arts. From Brown University Mr. Sullivan came to the American Mu- seum of Natural History, as assistant in physical anthropology, and during the first years of his connection with the Museum he laid the foundations for his future work in human biology, by training in general anatomy with Doctor William K. Gregory and Professor George S. Huntington and in general anthropology with Professor Franz Boas. From the very beginning, he showed an aptitude for research and he had not been long at the Museum ere he had published several important papers. These activities were interrupted by our entrance into the World War. Mr. Sullivan was appointed a First Lieutenant in the Section of Anthropology, Surgeon-General's Office in 1918, and while on duty at headquarters asisted in the compilation of the reports on Defects found in Drafted Men and Army Anthropology.
