    Life, Death, and Television: Deconstructing the Small Screen with Danny Brown Mary Sjaarda Master Thesis Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Master of Arts in Visual and Critical Studies Kendall College of Art and Design, Ferris State University December 2018 2 ABSTRACT The following thesis investigates our current cultural impasse—the “slow cancellation of the future”—through the unearthing of visuals, sounds, and technologies of televisual artifacts and aesthetics that is authored and performed using strategies in hybridity, pastiche, and repetition of pop culture iconography of the past. In the postmodern climate of resurrecting content of our past, we also unearth hidden contexts that continue to haunt in our collapsed time. Jacques Derrida’s deconstructionist method of hauntology, as adapted by contemporary media theorist Mark Fisher, speculates new constructions of meaning through notions of history, memory and identity by operating within the gaps and traces of ruptured time. Hauntology is an attempt to identify these paradoxes and to destabilize and undermine the binaries that represent our foundational perspectives and practices. Through this conceptual strategy, the television reveals itself as an uncanny technologized space of both play and disruption, where the past simultaneously defines and interrupts the present. My central research involves examining the televisual spaces in two music videos by Detroit rap artist Danny Brown. By placing himself into simulated televisual spaces of the past, Brown is able to speculate different meanings in the present by uncovering and exposing the contradictions that the smooth operation of our larger ideological system actively tries to repress. These videos, released under Brown’s 2016 album Atrocity Exhibition, transcend beyond nostalgic desire and into a surreal technologized simulation where the boundaries between time and history, self and Other, and past and present are forgotten, remembered, and reimagined.

Through a mixture of ideas drawn from artistic avant-garde movements as well as new social and religious movements, it examines the radical political and hedonist imaginaries of the experimental fringes of the UK Underground. Even though the theatres of operation have changed more than once since 1991 with the rise of the internet and a globalised finance economy, these imaginaries still raise questions that speak directly to the contemporary.

    Dub Techno's Hauntological Politics of Acoustic Ecology

    Borderlands: Dub Techno’s Hauntological Politics of Acoustic Ecology Feature Article Alessio Kolioulis Paris 8 University (France) / Sapienza University of Rome (Italy) Abstract This article explores the aesthetic, social and economic relationships between dub techno and urban space. Sketching out the neoliberal economic transition from the post-war economy to a post-Fordist society, this article lingers on dub/techno trends from four cities: Kingston, London, Detroit and Berlin. An archaeology of dub techno is reconstructed into four parts, each highlighting an affective relation, or “sound map”, between music and neoliberal economic production. Starting with the hauntological melancholia of London-based Burial’s music, this article traces the history and sonic networks of the dub techno diaspora, from Detroit techno’s city of urban decay to Berlin’s divided city. Finally, dub techno is narrated through a “borderland” mapped sonically between Detroit and Berlin, suggesting a futuristic politics of dub techno’s acoustic ecology.
