Other Family Trees – MARRIS of Healing

First Generation

1. John Marris was born in 1788/1789 in Cabourn. He died on 7 Dec 1872. He was buried on 10 Dec 1872 in St Peter & St Paul, , Lincs.

John married Frances Dent on 11 Apr 1810 in Healing, Lincs. Frances was born in 1785/1786 in Searby, Lincs. She died on 1 Feb 1879. She was buried on 5 Feb 1879 in Caistor Reg Distr, Lincs.

This is one of a number of MARRIS trees that has not been connected into the main Marris pedigree published on www.marrisfamilyhistory.uk.

Who was this John Marris? A fellow Marris researcher thinks he was the son of Edward Marris (Maros) of Irby, but I have not seen his evidence. The Census returns are not helpful because John Marris never gave the same place of birth. He gave Cabourn in 1851, Wrawby in 1861 and Wootton in 1872.

Assuming he was born 1788 or 89, here are the possible candidates:

1. John Marris baptised at Wrawby, Lincs, on 20 Jun 1788, the son of John & Elizabeth Marris 2. John Marris baptised at Wrawby, Lincs, on 10 Jun 1789, the son of Thomas & Frances Marris 3. John Marris baptised at Wootton, Lincs, on 21 (25?) Mar 1790, the son of William & Sarah Marris 4. John Marris baptised at Irby Upon Humber, Lincs, on 17 Jan 1790, the son of Edward & Ann Marris

Baptisms 1 and 2 can be discounted as both children died in infancy and were buried at Wrawby. Baptism 3 at Wootton is possible but other (inconclusive) references suggest that he married Mary Ann, lived at Wootton and was buried there. That leaves Baptism 4, the John Marris who was batpised at Irby upon Humber. If this is the same John Marris as the one at Irby, then the tree below can be moved into the "Marris of Irby" tree.

Looking now at John Marris and his wife Frances Dent, the marriage took place at Healing, Lincs. It was witnessed by John Briggs and Thos Betts. Both John & Frances were of the Parish of Healing at the time of their marriage.

Thomas Mumby, Head, Mar, 39, Shepherd, born Lincoln S Elkington Ann Mumby, Wife, Mar, 34, Shepherds wife, born Lincoln Healing . . . and their 7 children (not listed here).

One assumes this is the right couple. They were married on 6 Nov 1836 at Rothwell, Lincs. At the time of their marriage, Thomas Mumby was of the Parish of Waddingham, bachelor, and Ann Marris was of the Parish of Rothwell, spinster.

5 F iv. Jane Marris was christened on 6 Jun 1819 in Healing, Lincs. Jane married Henry Drewry on 3 May 1854 in Caistor, Lincs. Henry was born in 1812/1813 in Healing, Lincs.

Mary Ellis, Head, U, 67, Lodging House Keeper, born Lincolnshire South Kelsey Jane Marris, Visitor, U, 31, Dressmaker, born Lincolnshire Healing Elizabeth Bell, Visitor, U, 23, Dressmaker, born Lincolnshire

The VRI II index from the LDS shows the marriage of Jane Marris to Henry Drewry (son of Thomas Drewry) on 3 May 1854 at Caistor, Lincs. Both were of full age.

This is almost certainly the above Jane as the 1861 Census at Goxhill, Lincs, confirms her place of birth as Healing, Lincs, as follows:

Henry Drewry, Head, Mar, 48, Retired Coachman, born Lincolns Healing Jane Drewry, Wife, Mar, 40, born Lincolns Healing Elizabeth Stringer, Visitor, Widow, 74, born Notts Burnham Frederick Sales, Visitor, 6, Scholar, born York Hull Margaret W Sales, Visitor, 3, born York Hull

FreeBMD shows a marriage for Maria Marris in June Qtr, 1847 at Caistor Reg., District. On the same register page were two possible grooms, Thomas Curtis and Samuel Dobbs.

30 Sep 2015 (V3) © G Philip Marris Page 3 The 1851 Census at Horse Market, Caistor, Lincs, shows Samuel Dodds as the likely candidate, as follows:

7. William Marris (John) was christened on 31 Aug 1823 in Kirmington, Lincs. He died on 26 Mar 1886 in Caistor Reg. Distr., Lincs. He was buried on 28 Mar 1886 in St Peter & St Paul, Caistor, Lincs.

William married Ann Skelton in Jun 1856 in Caistor Reg. Distr., Lincs. Ann was born in 1836/1837 in Owersby, Lincs. She died on 7 May 1906. She was buried on 9 May 1906 in Caistor, Lincs.

I have assumed that Ann's maiden name was Skelton but one would need to order the marriage certificate to be sure, and to identify the location. The GRO records numerous marriages for William Marris but the likely candidate is the one that took place in June Qtr 1856 at Caistor Reg. District. On the same page was Anne Skelton. A search for Ann Skelton in the 1851 Census at North Owersby did throw up an Ann Skelton of the right age, as follows:

John Skelton, Head, marr, 58, Cottager, born Lissington Elizabeth Skelton, Wife, m, 53, borm Wragby George Skelton, Son, Labr, 17, Labr, born North Owersby Ann Skelton, Daur, 14, born North Owersby Elizabeth Fieldsend, Visitor, marr, 24, born North Owersby John Fieldsend, Visitor, 4, born Thornton

The 1871 Census at North Kelsey shows John Marris, age 14, in the household of John (a farmer) & Ellen Claton and family:

John Marris, Servant, 14, Farm Servant and Groom, born Lincolnshire Owersby Moor.

The 1881 Census at Broughton, Lincs, shows:

NOTE - Why "Dick"? A nickname perhaps?

There is no trace of Elizabeth Marris after this date.

The 1901 Census at St James, Great , Lincs, possibly shows Thomas Marris aged 35 in the household of William (a farm foreman) & Rebecca Dobbs and family. His age in 1901 doesn't tie up with his year of birth, but the place of birth is Nettleton. The entry reads:

30 Sep 2015 (V3) © G Philip Marris Page 8

Thomas Marris, Servant, S, 35, Ordinary Agricultural Labourer, Worker, Lincs Nettleton.

He also appears in the 1911 Census in the same Dobbs household as 1901, this time at Nune(?) Farm, Grimsby, Lincs, as follows:

Ann married William James Atkinson in Jun 1888 in Caistor Reg. Distr., Lincs. William was born in 1861/1862 in Manchester, Lancs.

The 1891 Census at 210 Rd, Gt Grimsby, Lincs, provides reasonable proof that Ann Marris married William James Atkinson. The 1891 Census shows:

12. George Marris (William, John) was born in 1862 in Riby, Lincs.

George married Betsey Carnaby in Sep 1888 in Caistor Reg. Distr., Lincs. Betsey was born in 1864/1865 in North Kelsey, Lincs.

The Census returns below are the only real evidence that this is the same George Marris who married Betsey Carnaby in September Qtr 1888, but one would need to see the names of George's parents on the marriage certificate in order to be absolutely sure.

FreeBMD shows three variations of her name on the marriage page: Annie Carnaby, Betsy Carnaby and Betsey Carnaby.

The 1891 Census at Croxton, Lincs, shows:

30 Sep 2015 (V3) © G Philip Marris Page 12 George and Betsey had the following children:

20 M i. Thomas Edward Marris was born in 1886/1887 in North Kelsey, Lincs. He died on 22 May 1934 in South Ferriby, Lincs. He was buried on 25 May 1934 in South Ferriby, Lincs.

The birth of Thomas Marris was not found in the GRO indexes but we know about him from the Census records above. From the 1911 Census, his marriage, burial and will, it appears his full name was Thomas Edward Marris rather than just Thomas Marris as was shown in the Census when he was a child at home with his parents.

Thomas married Rose Wrack in Jun 1912 in Glanford Brigg Reg. Distr., Lincs. Rose was born on 9 Feb 1891. She died on 4 Jan 1973 in South Ferriby, Lincs. She was buried on 9 Jan 1973 in South Ferriby, Lincs.

The 1911 Census (indexed by Ancestry as Thomase Dward Marris, born North Helsey (sic)), at Red House Farm, Barton on Humber, Lincs, shows Thomas Edward Marris in the household of John Thomas Sanderson (Foreman on Farm) and family, as follows:

Thomas Edward Marris, Servant, 24, Single, Waggoner on Farm, born Lincoln North Kelsey

MIs at South Ferriby [St Nicholas] (LI/M34), Lincs, show:

- Thomas Edward Marris, 22nd May 1934, aged 47. - Rose Marris, 4th January 1973, aged 81.

The index of wills at Somerset House shows:

- Thomas Edward Marris of 6 Prospect Villas, Horkstow Road, South Ferriby, Lincs. d. 22 May 1934 at Memorial Hospital, . £143. Admon. To; Rose Marris (Widow).

Edna married Alfred W Naylor in Jun 1914 in Glanford Brigg Reg. Distr., Lincs.

FreeBMD shows the marriage of Edna M Marris. One assumes this is the same Edna.

23 M iv. George Marris was born in Sep 1897 in South Kelsey, Lincs.

Different Censuses (above) give his place of birth as North or South Kelsey.

24 F v. Ann Marris was born in Jun 1902 in North Kelsey, Lincs.

14. William Marris (William, John) was born in 1864/1865 in Cabourn, Lincs.

William married Ruth Ann Clark in Dec 1907 in Grimsby Reg. Distr., Lincs. Ruth was born in 1881/1882 in Tetney, Lincs.

The 1911 Census at 73 Ladysmith Rd, Gt Grimsby, Lincs, shows:

William Marris, Head, 45, Married 3 years, 1 child living, Fish monger, born Cabourn Lincolnshire Rose Ana Marris, Wife, 29, Married, born Tetney Lincolnshire Eva Mary Marris, Daughter, 2, , born Gt Grimsby Lincolnshire

She is called Rose Ana in the 1911 Census but Ruth Ann in 1907 when she married William Marrris. Nevertheless, this does appear to be the same woman.

William and Ruth had the following children:

25 F i. Eva Mary Marris was born in Dec 1908 in Grimsby Reg. Distr., Lincs.

26 M ii. William Marris was born in Jun 1914 in Grimsby Reg. Distr., Lincs.

It is assumed that William was the son of William Marris & Ruth Ann Clark because the GRO index of births shows his birth registered at Grimsby with mother's maiden of Clark.

30 Sep 2015 (V3) © G Philip Marris Page 14 18. Samuel Marris (William, John) was born in Jun 1871 in Caistor, Lincs. He was christened on 7 May 1871 in Caistor, Lincs. He died on 24 Feb 1953. He was buried in Broughton, Lincs.

Samuel married Lucy Ann Lusby in Jun 1894 in Caistor Reg Distr, Lincs. Lucy was born in 1871/1872 in Bishopthorpe, Lincs. She died on 20 Dec 1945. She was buried in Broughton, Lincs.

The 1891 Census at Willoughton, Lincs shows Samuel Marris (Ancestry has him indexed under "Harris"), age 19, in the household of George (a Farm freeman) & Lucy and family:

Samuel Marris, Servant, S, 19, Farm Servant, born Lincolnshire Caistor

The 1901 Census at Abbey Road, Ulceby, Lincs, shows:

30 Sep 2015 (V3) © G Philip Marris Page 15 The index of wills at Somerset House shows:

Samuel Marris of Hemswell Grange, Hemswell, Lincs. d. 24 Feb 1953 at the Glanford Hospital, Wrawby Road, Brigg, Lincs. £635. To; Walter Marris and Arthur Robinson steelworkers

Samuel and Lucy had the following children:

27 M i. Harry Marris was born in 1895 in Caistor Reg. District, Lincs. He died on 23 Nov 1895 in Hull Royal Infirmary, Hull, Yorks. He was buried in Nov 1895 in General Cemetery, Hull, Yorks.

The 1911 Census at Bonby (above) showed Harry's name with the word "decd" against him. The line had been entered but crossed out. One assumes circumstantially that this was the Harry Marris who was born in 1895 and died at the age of 6 months.
