2017 Jedi 12 car results, observations, silly comments and thanks.

The above table only shows where time was lost and codeboards were missed.

Congratulations to Eddie Gale & Glynn Hayward on an excellent performance. Eddie's usual nav and Glynn's usual driver were both unavailable, so they formed a scratch crew and certainly gelled on the night - The force was strong for them.

Last year, Simon was 1st Novice on this event, this year he and Dave almost cracked it. Just the nasty short section at the end, with the backwards herringbone caused them any problems. In a change to the results announced on the night, and after checking the regs, Dave & Simon take second spot by virtue of the furthest clean rule. I think we can say their Jedi Training is now complete.

Wug & Bob made a welcome return to the Jedi having won it in 2014. Only Bob's inability to count cost them this time. He got a bit confused crossing the grid line numbers on the section down from 6 to 7. Despite that, they still got the last podium position.

Ian & Tony were the second crew not to drop any time all night. A near faultless performance marred only by missing the board at Holmbury.

The little Skoda of Peter & Steve was made to work hard in the Surrey Hills. Still, they seemed to have a good evening. They'll be even quicker next season when Peter has had his knee op, and he will really be able to put his foot down. Hope it all goes well, Pete.

Jim and Allan had mixed fortunes. They had 'a bit of a 'mare' in the middle section through - possibly a puncture or maybe just brain fade. They got their act together again though, only to be caught out on the tricky last section.

Seeded at 5, Colin and Rhys were well on the way to a terrific finish. If only, in Rhys's own words "I'd actually read ALL the nav" for the last section. Having got their route on the map, they headed off, on the wrong roads, to Shillinglee, only to discover the marshal wasn't there. They'd missed the codeboard just up the road from TC8, and dropped 16 minutes, on what was otherwise a faultless run.

Congratulations also Ian Donaldson & Rowan Corney from Southsea on finishing first Novices. Rowan had trouble getting the 'MR, SOX, TR...' nav to work, probably due to it going over the fold in the map. Unfazed they pressed on, only dropping 14 minutes on the road. A Jedi Knight of the future, no doubt.

The other novice crew of Barry & Nick also had problems on the section, but did exactly the right thing and skipped TC6 and got straight back into it. The fail and 3 minutes cost them a place.

The last of the crews to make it back to the pub, but sadly classed as DNF were Graham & Paul. Again, a good solid run until the herringbone. Unfortunately, as they didn't make it to MTC9 they can't be classified as finishers. Better luck next year guys.

And Finally… Mark & Josh Reynolds, on their first ever event, GMC’s newest members found the demands of navigating on OS maps more of a challenge than they anticipated. They were using the Jedi as a shakedown for the Beetle and crew, before heading off to Italy to compete in the Mille Miglia. The tulip style roadbook and mostly daylight nature of the event should see them do well. Best of luck guys, and I'm sure we'll see you out on 12 cars in the near future.

After last year’s event, which had 4 crews tied for top spot, we were glad to be back in the narrow and more challenging lanes of the Surrey Hills. Talking to most of you afterwards, the drivers all seemed to have had an enjoyable thrash, whilst the navigators had enough to keep you busy all night. It's always nice to have a full event, it's even better to receive the thanks and comments for a good event.

It goes without saying, but I'll say it anyway. All motorsport depends on a dedicated band of marshals and this is no exception. So most heartfelt thanks go to Steve Cole, TC3 & 8 and Nav checker par excellence, Jon Marlow & Francis Carlisle-Kitz TC2 & 7, Bob & Sarah Bridges TC4, Peter (Petey Pablo?) Howe and Craig Goree at TC6 and finally Graham & Sharron Skingle running TC5 and clearing up the codeboards until the early hours.

That's probably about it for this season, so we'll see you all out in the lanes come September. Have a great summer and drive safe.

Mark & Lorraine.

McLaren Factory Visit 13th May

We are indebted to Pash for organising this visit. As you may know Pash now works for McLaren and has a very enviable short commute to work! However, formal visits are few and far between but employees are able to take around small groups of family and friends.

Pash as our guide was full of detail and information as we made our way around. We spent time around the heritage collection overlooking the lake. Before heading past all the trophies to view the production line of the road cars.

Pictures were allowed to be taken, but there were restrictions which we duly observed! Sadly that included the production line. We were all surprised at the volume of cars being produced and all to order.

A big thanks to Pash, let’s hope we can arrange another visit so other members can experience this as well.
