November 22 - 23 A Weekend of Jewish Story Telling “Storytelling of the Rabbis” Friday, November 22– Buffet Dinner and Story Telling following a Kabbalat Shabbat Service Service in Guller Chapel ...... 6 pm Dinner (Reservations Required) following the service ...... 7 pm Adults $15, Children 12 and under $12 Story Telling with Howard Schwartz ...... 7:45 pm (no charge for program) in Leve Auditorium “How the Ari Created a Myth and Transformed Judaism” Saturday, November 23 – Lunch & Learn following Shabbat morning services in Leve Auditorium

On Friday evening, Schwartz traces Jewish legends from their beginnings in the Bible to their evolution in later Jewish literature, demonstrating how the ancient rabbis reimagined the biblical stories and created new ones of their own. Among the legends to be traced are those of Serah bat Asher, who is said to have lived longer than ; Asenath, Joseph’s Egyptian wife, who legend said was also the daughter of Dina, Jacob’s daughter; and the Tzohar, the glowing stone given by God to Adam and Eve and later used by Noah to illuminate the ark. This talk is drawn from the book Reimagining the Bible: The Storytelling of the Rabbis. On Saturday, Howard will explore tikkun olam and how this concept is rooted in the last great myth infused into Jewish tradition, the creation of the renowned 16th-century Jewish mystic, Rabbi Isaac Luria of Safed, known as the Ari. These programs will be held at Kol Rinah, 829 N. Hanley Rd. and are free of charge. Note: There is a charge for Friday night dinner and reservations are required by November 18.
