Except where stated otherwise by reference or acknowledgment, the work presented is entirely my own. __________________________________________ Bobbie Nolan Abstract This thesis examines the Irish language in London, Philadelphia and San Francisco in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Exploring the ways in which Irish speakers used and maintained their language in the diaspora between the years 1850 and 1920, this thesis argues that the language transformed from being a component of a private, personal identity to a public expression of an Irish diasporic identity. While the imperial context of London and the republican contexts of Philadelphia and San Francisco presented specific circumstances and opportunities for the use and maintenance of the Irish language, the sociolinguistic situation in Ireland directly impacted the language’s development overseas. The focus of this thesis is on the continued use of the Irish language as a vernacular in the period 1850-1880 and the structures which allowed this, however, this thesis also examines the impact of the Gaelic Revival movement on the language and its role in Irish cultural identity. It explores the ways in which different urban environments affected the survival of the language, as well as the genesis, development and outcomes of the revival. Using comparison, this thesis locates the Irish language in three cities which have previously been overlooked in the history of the Irish language abroad and identifies the transnational links between Ireland, London, Philadelphia and San Francisco. Examining these Irish communities over a seventy-year period and incorporating both the pre-revival and revival periods allows for the exploration of this minority language over time, addressing the changing role of the language within each city. i Lay Summary Little is known about the full extent of the Irish language’s presence within Irish communities abroad in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, even though it is estimated that 20 per cent of the approximately 6,000,000 emigrants from Ireland in the post-Famine period consisted of Irish speakers. This thesis therefore investigates Irish speakers in London, Philadelphia and San Francisco between the years 1850 and 1920 and the ways in which they used and maintained their language following their emigration from Ireland. These three cities were selected for comparison owing to the different environments present in each; London remained within the British Empire while Philadelphia and San Francisco were both in the republican United States though were very different cities. Each of these cities was home to a large Irish-born population after the year 1850 and provided varying opportunities for migrants which directly impacted the continuation of Irish speaking. In addition, the condition and status of the language in Ireland itself during this period is of note. At the beginning of the nineteenth century 2.5 million people spoke Irish in Ireland, dropping to approximately 1.5 million in 1851, and just over 680,000 in 1891; the reasons for this transition were central to the language’s development overseas. This thesis begins by presenting these factors in relation to Ireland before identifying and analysing them in each of London, Philadelphia and San Francisco. The focus is on the continued use of Irish as a spoken language in these three cities in the period 1850-1880 and the structures which facilitated this, highlighting regional variations as well as similarities. By comparing these cities, this thesis uncovers the Irish language ii in three places which have previously been overlooked in the history of the language abroad and identifies the connections between Ireland, London, Philadelphia and San Francisco. This thesis also explores the impact of the Gaelic Revival, a movement which saw a renewed interest in the language and its role in the creation of an Irish national identity, and concludes with an investigation of this movement’s origins and development between the years 1880 and 1920 and the changes in attitudes and practice which it heralded. The examination of these Irish communities over a period of 70 years allows for a better understanding of the development of this minority language over time and addresses the changing role of the language within each city. This thesis concludes that the period 1850-1920 witnessed the transformation of the Irish language from being part of a private, personal identity to being a public articulation of an Irish cultural and political identity. iii Acknowledgements Thank you to my supervisors Enda Delaney and Wilson McLeod who have been nothing but encouraging and supportive throughout the five years it has taken to plan, research and write this thesis.     THOMAS FIELDING SCOTT: FAILURE OR FOUNDATION? by Lawrence N. Crumb The Episcopal Church’s first bishop in the Pacific Northwest was Thomas Fielding Scott. He served for only thirteen years (1854-1867) and left thinking he had been a failure. But was he? Scott was born 12 March 1807 in Iredell County, North Carolina, the younger of two brothers. He became an active member of the Presbyterian Church at age seventeen and went on to Franklin College, as the University of Georgia was then known. He graduated in 1829 and was licensed to preach in the Presbyterian Church. He served several churches in Georgia and Tennessee until 1842, when he met Bishops James Hervey Otey of Tennessee and Leonidas Polk, Missionary Bishop of the Southwest (later, of Louisiana). They were both converts to the Episcopal Church, and under their influence he came to decide that the claims of episcopacy were true. (He had been unhappy with the Presbyterian Church because of a split in 1837-38.) He was ordained deacon in 1843 and priest in 1844 by Bishop Stephen Elliott of Georgia, serving churches in Marietta and Columbus. He later described himself as “conservative and catholic,” possibly the influence of Bishop Otey, whose “high and dry” churchmanship was widespread in the early Nineteenth Century. The General Convention of 1853 established the Missionary jurisdiction of the Oregon and Washington Territories, and Scott was elected as its first bishop. Unlike William Ingraham Kip, who was elected at the same time for California and consecrated at the convention with several bishops taking part, Scott was consecrated at Christ Church, Savannah, on 8 January 1854, with only three bishops (Georgia, Alabama, and South Carolina) participating.

As I demonstrate, the methodologies available to early modern historians, many of which were developed by medieval chroniclers, were extraordinary flexible, able to meet a large number of scholarly and political needs. I argue that many early modern historians worked with medieval texts and genres not because they had yet to learn more sophisticated models for representing the past, but rather because one of the most effective ways that these writers dealt with the political and religious exigencies of their times was by adapting the practices, genres, and materials of medieval history. I demonstrate that the early modern national history was capable of supporting multiple genres and reading modes; in fact, many of these histories reflect their authors’ conviction that authentic past narratives required genres with varying levels of facticity.

This milieu was reflected in the skills, talents, and accomplishments of members of the extended family. His paternal grandfather Daniel Nolan from Munster was a national teacher and taught music at the Model School in Omagh, Co. Tyrone. He was an excellent singer and an accomplished violinist. He had a special fondness for theatre and opera, performances of which he frequently attended with his young wife. A special concert was organised in his honour in Omagh prior to his transfer to Belfast in the early 1880s. In July 1867 Daniel married Jane Mellon3 a former pupil at the Omagh school and fourth daughter of James Mellon, a strong farmer from Eskeradooey in Co. Tyrone. The marriage took place at Knockmoyle Catholic Church in Cappagh parish where Jane was born. The parish priest, Rev. Charles McCauley, was the celebrant. In the national census entries for 1901 and for 1911, when Jane, also known as ‘Sinéad,’ lived with the O’Nolan family in Strabane, her competence in both Irish and English was recorded.

EAMON KANE In the third week of August 908 AD, the Battle of Ballaghmoon was fought between High King, Flann Sinna, Máele Sechnaill (879–916 AD); the King of Leinster, Cerball mac Múirecáin, Uí Dúnlainge, Ui Faeláin and Cathal, son of Conchobhar, king of Connaught. Opposing these were Bishop Cormac mac Cuilennáin, Eóganacht Chaisil, King of Munster (902-908 AD); Flaithbertact, son of Inmainén, abbot of Inis Cathaig and Cellach mac Cerbail, King of Osraige (905-908 AD). Ballaghmoon is a townland in the barony of Kilkea and Moone situated in south Kildare. All that remains of an important post reformation church and rec- tory are ruins standing in a walled graveyard containing ancient and extant graves.
