  • Minor League Baseball Tampa Tarpons Step up to the Plate with Mentorship for Unrepresented Children in Court System
Minor League Baseball Tampa Tarpons Step Up to the Plate with Mentorship for Unrepresented Children in Court System TAMPA, Fla., (August 28, 2018) What started as a simple request from a judge to find a sports mentor for a child in the Hillsborough County dependency court has evolved into a mentorship program that pairs children with Major League Baseball prospects playing for the Tampa Tarpons. The Tampa Tarpons Professional Baseball Club is a member of the Florida State League (FSL) and the Class A-Advanced affiliate of the New York Yankees Major League Baseball team. The Tarpons play their home games at George M. Steinbrenner Field from April to September. Donna Ackerson is a Child Advocate Manager for the Hillsborough County Guardian ad Litem Foundation (GAL). After a hearing for two brothers in the 13th Judicial Court System required her to find a sports mentor, Ackerson and her intern Katerina Fleming, reached out to all the sports teams in the area. She heard back from one organization, the Tampa Tarpons. “This started as a grassroots effort because I wanted to help two children under my advocacy. I never expected the feedback to be so positive,” says Ackerson. Currently in its second year, the program has matched 12 children with Tampa Tarpons’ players who provide one-on-one interactions with the youths. The kids get to attend and sit near players during home games; they get to spend time with players during or after practices; and this year the organization took the initiative to tutor a child who was having difficulties learning English.

  • Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings November 21, 2012
Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings November 21, 2012 CINCINNATI ENQUIRER Pitching is pricey, transactions By John Fay | 11/20/2012 12:17 PM ET Want to know why the Reds would be wise to lock up Homer Bailey and Mat Latos long-term? The Kansas City Royals agreed to a three-year deal with Jeremy Guthrie that pays him $5 million on 2013, $11 million in 2014 and $9 million in 2015. He went 8-12 with a 4.76 ERA and 1.41 WHIP. Bailey went 13-10 with a 3.68 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP. Latos went 14-4 with a 2.48 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP. It’s a bit apples and oranges: Guthrie is a free agent; Bailey is arbitration-eligible for the second time, Latos for the first. But the point is starting pitching — even mediocre starting pitching — is expensive. SIX ADDED: The Reds added right-handers Carlos Contreras, Daniel Corcino, Curtis Partch and Josh Ravin, left-hander Ismael Guillon and outfielder Yorman Rodriguez to the roster in order to protect them from the Rule 5 draft. Report: Former Red Frank Pastore badly hurt in motorcycle wreck By dclark | 11/20/2012 7:55 PM ET The Inland Valley Daily Bulletin is reporting that former Cincinnati Reds pitcher Frank Pastore, a Christian radio personality in California, was badly injured Monday night after being thrown from his motorcycle onto the highway near Duarte, Calif. From dailybulletin.com’s Juliette Funes: A 55-year-old motorcyclist from Upland was taken to a trauma center when his motorcycle was hit by a car on the 210 Freeway Monday night.

The Boston Red Sox Wednesday, March 3, 2021 * The Boston Globe How Nick Pivetta is embracing a fresh start with the Red Sox Peter Abraham FORT MYERS, Fla. — Nick and Kristen Pivetta have been nomads for some time, unable to return to their native Canada because of strict pandemic protocols regarding crossing the border from the United States. “We haven’t been home in almost two years,” said Nick, a righthander who was traded to the Red Sox last summer. “So we packed up and came here.” Home is now a rented condo a short drive from JetBlue Park. They arrived in October for what in every way has been a fresh start. Pivetta, 28, spent nearly five years with the Philadelphia Phillies. He made his major league debut with the team in 2017, won his first game a few weeks later, and struck out 13 Cardinals one memorable night in 2018. But he welcomed the trade to Boston. It was time. “I can’t speak on behalf of the Phillies. But I don’t feel they valued me as a starter anymore,” Pivetta said. “I was ready for some new scenery. It was best for both parties.” That was easily confirmed, a Phillies official saying the team felt Pivetta was more confident in his abilities than a career 5.40 earned run average suggested he should be. They recognized his talent but were frustrated by his stubbornness. The Red Sox took a chance on the talent, trading relievers Heath Hembree and Brandon Workman for Pivetta and righthander Connor Seabold.

  • 2020 International League Field Managers Eight Il Clubs to Be Led by New Skippers This Season
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 11, 2020 2020 INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE FIELD MANAGERS EIGHT IL CLUBS TO BE LED BY NEW SKIPPERS THIS SEASON When the International League's 137th season opens on April 9, eight of the circuit’s fourteen teams will have a new manager leading the quest to capture the coveted Governors’ Cup trophy. Only six managers return from the 2019 season, although several of the League’s new field generals bring pre-existing ties to their teams and communities. It is the first time since 2006 that more than half of the circuit’s clubs changed managers during an offseason. The reining IL Manager of the Year Damon Berryhill is the International League’s longest- tenured manager, preparing to begin his fourth season at the helm of the Gwinnett Stripers. Also hoping to get his team back to the postseason is Brady Williams, who took Durham to the finals in his first year with the Bulls in 2019. They will be challenged in the South Division by another returning manager in Norfolk, Gary Kendall. The 2018 IL Manager of the Year, Lehigh Valley’s Gary Jones, will lead the IronPigs once again this season. Like Jones, Brian Esposito in Indianapolis is also at the helm for the third straight campaign. IL Hall of Famer Billy McMillon will manage the Red Sox for the franchise’s final season at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket. Two men have found themselves moving from a coach’s role to the manager’s chair in 2020. Pennsylvania-native Doug Davis (former Syracuse manager) takes over in Scranton/Wilkes- Barre after three seasons coaching, while in Columbus, Ohio-native Andy Tracy is the new manager after helping lead the Clippers to the 2019 Governors’ Cup title as hitting coach.
