We are proud to be affiliated with this popular musical that debuted on Broadway during the 2008 Season. This guide has been developed as a teaching tool to assist educators in the classroom who are introducing the story in conjunction with the stage production. By using StageNOTES®, you will understand how Gypsy incorporates the bygone days of vaudeville (History), expands our vocabulary (Language Arts), illuminates the human condition (Behavioral Studies), aids in our own self-exploration (Life Skills) and encourages creative thinking and expression (The Arts). The Camp Broadway creative team, consisting of theater educators, scholars, researchers and theater professionals, has developed a series of lesson plans that, although inspired by and based on the musical Gypsy can also accompany class study. To assist you in preparing your presentation of each lesson, we have included: an objective; excerpts taken directly from the script of Gypsy; a discussion topic; a writing assignment; and an interactive class activity. The reproducible lessons (handouts) accompany each lesson unit, which contains: an essay question; a creative exercise; and an “after hours activity” that encourages students to interact with family, friends, or the community at large. The curriculum categories offered in the Gypsy study guide have been informed by the basic standards of education detailed in Content Knowledge: A Compendium of Standards and Benchmarks for K-12 Education, 2nd Edition, written by John S. Kendall and Robert J. Marzano (1997). This definitive compilation was published by Mid-Continent Regional Education Laboratory, Inc. (McREL) and the Association for Supervision and Curricular Development (ASCD) after a systematic collection, review and analysis of noteworthy national and state curricular documents in all subjects. The Gypsy study guide is for you, the educator, in response to your need for a standards-compliant curriculum. We truly hope this study guide will help you incorporate the themes and content of Gypsy into your classroom lessons. Philip Katz Producing Director 4 5 LIST OF CHARACTERS AND SYNOPSIS THE STORY The story starts in Seattle with stage mother, Rose, pushing her two daughters into “Uncle Jocko’s Kiddie Show”. Rose believes that her daughter, June is the most likely to become a star. Louise is plainer and quieter; she stands meekly in her sister’s shadow. A new act called ‘Baby June and her Newsboys’ is conceived by Rose, and the family is off to the ‘big time’ in Los Angeles. The act steeped in star spangled banners, dancing cows (Louise plays the rear end), and screaming newsboys moves to Dallas, Akron, New York, Buffalo and Omaha. Along the way Rose meets Herbie, a former theatrical agent who now sells candy on the vaudeville circuit. Rose hires him as manager. He makes himself father to the troupe, sharing with them their meals of chow mein, Rose’s favorite food. Rose scrimps as she schemes and scrambles for bookings and billings to maintain their hand to mouth existence. She sleeps her charges six in a dingy hotel room and makes their costumes from hotel blankets. Her object is to make her two penniless girls into world stars. The girls begin to grow up and the act becomes ‘Dainty June and her Newsboys.’ Unfortunately its quality does not improve. Bookings are cancelled and the act moves on. Louise wishes that Momma would marry a plain man so they could settle down. Herbie proposes but is rejected. June elopes with Tulsa, one of the boys in the act. Rose sets out to make Louise into the star. She bursts into new enthusiasm with the rousing number “Everything’s Coming Up Roses”. Behind Rose lies a worrying sense of doom; a feeling that she never will fulfill her dream of stardom for her girls because it is really a dream of stardom for herself. Finally the troupe reaches the bottom, a burlesque house in Wichita. Rose laments that she would rather starve than perform there. Louise realizes there is no vaudeville left except for burlesque. Here the clumsy Louise shoots into stardom by becoming something different: a ladylike stripper. Three strippers dressed respectively in a ballet costume, a trumpet and well placed electric light bulbs are used in a most exaggerated, but very funny number, “You Gotta Get a Gimmick”, to indicate the difference between the usual brassy stripper and the very elegant Louise. At last Louise breaks away from her mother and goes out on her own as Gypsy Rose Lee. Rose bursts into the plaintive “Rose’s Turn” in which she sings of her suppressed talents that she has sacrificed to further the careers of her unappreciative daughters. Tom Mayes answered these questions eloquently in his speech at theHistoric Preservation Awards Ceremony at the Charlotte Museum of History on August 22, 2019. (And, yes, we won an award!) Mayes’ book, Why Old Places Matter, How Historic Places Affect Our Identity and Well-Being, addresses how people who love old places—as we love NoDa— connect to history even in times of massive change. Mayes argues that old places matter because they give us our sense of belonging, giving us continuity, stability, identity, and memory. Thus preserving our old NoDa places is not just for understanding our mill village history, but it gives us our sense of ourselves.

    The Nineteenth-Century Russian Gypsy Choir and the Performance of Otherness Erik R. Scott Summer 2008 Erik R. Scott is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of History, at the University of California, Berkeley Acknowledgments I would like to thank Professor Victoria Frede and my fellow graduate students in her seminar on Imperial Russian History. Their careful reading and constructive comments were foremost in my mind as I conceptualized and wrote this paper, first for our seminar in spring 2006, now as a revised work for publication. Abstract: As Russia’s nineteenth-century Gypsy craze swept through Moscow and St. Petersburg, Gypsy musicians entertained, dined with, and in some cases married Russian noblemen, bureaucrats, poets, and artists. Because the Gypsies’ extraordinary musical abilities supposedly stemmed from their unique Gypsy nature, the effectiveness of their performance rested on the definition of their ethnic identity as separate and distinct from that of the Russian audience. Although it drew on themes deeply embedded in Russian— and European—culture, the Orientalist allure of Gypsy performance was in no small part self-created and self-perpetuated by members of Russia’s renowned Gypsy choirs. For it was only by performing their otherness that Gypsies were able to seize upon their specialized role as entertainers, which gave this group of outsiders temporary control over their elite Russian audiences even as the songs, dances, costumes, and gestures of their performance were shaped perhaps more by audience expectations than by Gypsy musical traditions. The very popularity of the Gypsy musical idiom and the way it intimately reflected the Russian host society would later bring about a crisis of authenticity that by the end of the nineteenth century threatened the magical potential of Gypsy song and dance by suggesting it was something less than the genuine article.

    GYPSY CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS: • Momma Rose (age from 35 - 50) The ultimate stage mother. Lives her life vicariously through her two daughters, whom she's put into show business. She is loud, brash, pushy and single- minded, but at times can be doting and charming. She is holding down demons of her own that she is afraid to face. Her voice is the ultimate powerful Broadway belt. Minimal dance but must move well. Comic timing a must. Strong Mezzo/Alto with good low notes and belt. • Baby June (age 9-10) is a Shirley Temple-like up-and-coming vaudeville star, and Madam Rose's youngest daughter. Her onstage demeanor is sugary-sweet, cute, precocious and adorable to the nth degree. Needs to be no taller than 3', 5". An adorable character - Mama Rose's shining star. Strong child singer, strong dancer. Mezzo. • Young Louise (about 12) She should look a couple years older than Baby June. She is Madam Rose's brow-beaten oldest daughter, and has always played second fiddle to her baby sister. She is shy, awkward, a little sad and subdued; she doesn't have the confidence of her sister. Strong acting skills needed. The character always dances slightly out of step but the actress playing this part must be able to dance. Mezzo singer. • Herbie (about 45) agent for Rose's children and Rose's boyfriend and a possible husband number 4. He has a heart of gold but also has the power to defend the people he loves with strength. Minimum dance. A Baritone, sings in one group number, two duets and trio with Rose and Louise.

Fanny Brice, America's Funny Girl will be open May 23, 2012 and run until June 17, 2012. Previews begin May 20. Fanny Brice, America’s Funny Girl is a reworking of Maltz Jupiter Theatre’s 2009 hit production Fanny Brice: The Real Funny Girl. Writer and Director David H. Bell modified the script and is bringing Asolo Rep the most inspiring version yet. TCPalm raved, “Marya Grandy may not be the real Fanny Brice…but she just might be a new version of Ethel Merman. That’s with a little Patti LuPone and the emotional singing delivery al a Judy Garland tossed in for good measure”. WJTW FM said “what really brought the audience to its feet for a standing ovation however was the finale…it doesn’t get any better than that.” Born Fania Borach on the Lower East Side of New York City in 1891, Brice began her career on stage with a burlesque troupe at the age of 17. Two years later she was headlining for the Ziegfeld Follies, and by 1921 she released her signature song, “My Man.” Brice became one of the biggest comedic stars to grace the stage, yet her personal life wasn’t as successful, with heartache and betrayal followed her at every step and her three marriages all ending in divorce.
