ANTIQUITY iMimm^ m ®mm» The surname of Dick is of consider- able antiquity in Scotland, and it is the general opinion of our antiquaries, that that they are of Danish extraction : it is also believed, that Dick, or Dyck, in this country, has the same origin with Van Dyke, or Lords of the Dykes, or Dyke Graafs, as they are called, an office of great trust and eminence, being the guar- dians of the bulwarks against the sea and rivers in the flat countries of Germany. The first of the name we have on re- cord is William De Dyke, who was Al- derman, or first Magistrate, of the city of Edinburgh in 1296, before the institution of a Lord Provost ; and it appears from A 4 our histories ami records, that the Dicks were proprietors of lands in several coun- ties in Scotland some centuries ago. It is also well authenticated, and much to their credit, that the progenitors of this respectable family were great promoters of commerce, and did no small service to their country in the mercantile way, by their extensive trade both foreign and do- mestic. Their immediate ancestor was James Dick, who lived in the reign of King James V.

  • Dunkeld Cathedral
Property in Care (PIC) no :PIC0 25 Designations: Scheduled Monument (SM90119) Taken into State care: 1925 (Ownership) Last reviewed: 2004 HISTORIC ENVIRONMENT SCOTLAND STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE DUNKELD CATHEDRAL We continually revise our Statements of Significance, so they may vary in length, format and level of detail. While every effort is made to keep them up to date, they should not be considered a definitive or final assessment of our properties. Historic Environment Scotland – Scottish Charity No. SC045925 Principal Office: Longmore House, Salisbury Place, Edinburgh EH9 1SH DUNKELD CATHEDRAL BRIEF DESCRIPTION Dunkeld cathedral is a partly ruined structure whose ownership is shared between Historic Environment Scotland and the Church of Scotland. The ruined nave, south porch, north-west tower and surrounding grounds are in guardianship, while the roofed choir remains in the care of the Church of Scotland and is used for worship during part of the year. The cathedral stands within the remains of an early 19th-century designed landscape. Construction of the cathedral in its present form probably began in the mid-13th century and reached completion in the late 15th or early 16th century, only 60 years prior to the Reformation. Following the Reformation, the nave was unroofed and the choir became the parish church for Dunkeld. The parkland in which the cathedral stands was created by the Atholl family in the late 18th century. They also used the former chapter house as a family burial aisle. The cathedral was one of the first buildings in Britain to have restoration works funded by government subsidy. Restoration was carried out with funds from the Duke of Atholl and the government in 1762 and 1814–15 and further works were paid for by Sir Donald Currie in 1908.

  • The Story of the Tweed
THE LIBRARY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA LOS ANGELES THE STORY OF THE TWEED THE STORY OF THE TWEED BY THE RIGHT HONOURABLE SIR HERBERT MAXWELL, BART. ILLUSTRATED LONDON JAMES NISBET AND COMPANY, LIMITED 22, BERNERS STREET, W. 1909 THE STORY OF THE TWEED IS DEDICATED TO ANDREW LANG THAN WHOM NONE IS MORE ABLE TO DISCERN ITS FLAWS NONE MORE CERTAIN TO JUDGE THEM GENTLY 868667 INTRODUCTION aim of the following chapters is to THEindicate some of the sources of interest which enrich the valley of the Tweed. In quoting from the ballads, in which this valley is more prolific than any other in the United Kingdom, the common and most familiar versions have been taken. From the year 1802, when Scott published the first volume of his 'Border Minstrelsy^ down to the close of last century, when Mr. F. J. Child finished his monumental series upon English and Scottish ballads, this literature has never lacked diligent students and critics. Probably all that can be written usefully on the subject is within the reach of those who care to exa- mine it critically. As for history, the writer is human, and even in the slight sketch here offered some passages must be affected by his prepossession and prejudice, while other passages reflect what seemed to him the likeliest of two or more conflicting versions. The intention of the INTRODUCTION book is to provide what might be learned from the conversation of an intelligent native by one making a leisurely progress through the scenes described. I am informed that Queen Mary's House in Jedburgh has lost the venerable appearance it presented when last I saw it many years ago.

BIBLIOGRAPHY OF EAST LOTHIAN EAST LOTHIAN ANTIQUARIAN AND FIELD NATURALISTS' SOCIETY 1936 BIBLIOGRAPHY OF EAST LOTHIAN COMPILED BY JAMES H. JAMIESON F.S.A.SCOT. ASSISTED BY ELEANOR HAWKINS WITH 'INTRODUCTION BY w. FORBES GRAY F.R.S.E., F.S.A.SCOT. EDINBURGH PRINTED FOR EAST LOTHIAN ANTIQUARIAN AND FIELD NATURALISTS' SOCIETY 1936 l ~ ~· .[., ..C) ~.. ! :!:"" :·,. ;; : ~.· "~· ; . ' ''' '· l PREFACE THIS work aims at registering all books and lesser publications relating .to East Lothian; furnishing bibliographical particulars, such as size, number of pages, date, name ·of publisher, etc. ; and providing brief descriptive notes,· indicating the. scope and distinctive features of each item. In endeavouring to bring together the varied.publications of three centuries, it is inevitable that some should escape· notice, but every effort has been made, by diligent search ~n likely quarters, to make the biblio graphy as complete as possible. The magazine and newspaper articles included in the survey are, needless to say; only a selection. Besides public:;~tions exclusively. concerned with East Lothian, this bibliography includes general works. -in which the county is prominent. The biographical section records not only the printed lives of men born in East Lothian but those of others who, while not natives,.have by long residence or some other interest become identified with the district. As the main object is fo illustrate the history of the county, books written by natives on subjects unconnected with East Lothian are omitted, though an exception has been made in the case of loca~ poets and a few others. Space has also been devoted to numerous publications by Haddingtonians which, although their subject-matter is extraneous, contain memoirs of the writers.
